Voted Jill.

I recall Scruffy or another team already made a color separation patch for Guy, but can't recall if it was good or not.

i don't think anyone has made a color separation patch at all, but i don't remember anyone who has done it yet

I voted for Guy. I'm aware of ScruffyDragon's CS patch, but the one here looks much better.

I like what you did with his pants, and that you gave him a Sabotage palette.

Does anyone have a link to Scruffy's patch?  If nothing else it might save me some time on my version if Guy wins.

Also, I'll leave the poll open until sometime next month.  It seems like a long time for something like this, but I won't be able to get started for a while anyway.

What about the Gambit you were separating? I understand is absurdly tough so I´ll deal with it if is cancelled :P

Would vote for Thanos if there were a decent one but doing what you have planned for Thanos could help motivate someone to do a decent Thanos, I choose Cyclops but damn it was a tough decision :P All are looking amazing

Thank you for the link.  Just checked it out, and I think I'd be better off starting from scratch.  No offense to X-Boy, but everything is too inconsistent to use.

Also, yeah I had to cancel Gambit.  Way too much time for such minor results.  I apologize to anyone who was looking forward to that.

I say Guy cause it looks really good, but Cyclops wouldn't be a bad choice. Thanks for all your help. How do you do this so fast/what method do you use?

Voted Cyclops because he still is arguably one of Buckus's greatest creations.

Well thank you sir

Perhaps :P I mean college stuff has not gave me too much time lately but I´m just missing his Air kick, the dive kicks, berserker barrage and the tornado claw and its variations (which are 40+ sprites on its own) hopefully this weekend I could do until the berserker barrage.

Man I can´t believe it taked all this time... oh well

Honestly, I want to vote for both Cyclops and Juggernaut simply because both would be so easy to do that I bet that you could finish both in nearly the same time that it takes to to do a more detailed character.

But since I can't do that I'll vote for Jill instead.

How do you do this so fast/what method do you use?

My post in this thread pretty much outlines my method:
http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/a-place-share-color-separation-techniques-127686.0.html

I wouldn't say I'm very fast at it. If I have extra free time during the week, I try to knock out about 10 sprites a day, sometimes more on my days off work.

As for Wolvie...maybe I could help with some of those remaining sprites.  I know a lot of people are looking forward to that patch, myself included.  PM me if you're interested.

Nope, not yet anyway.  I'll most likely close the poll on Nov. 9th, may as well let everyone who cares to get a vote in.

Also, I'll more than likely separate Cyclops' legs like you have them in your template.  Easy and makes for more interesting palettes.

He's seperating POTS' Guy sff. POTS used Guy's SFA sprites. IDK if he could swap them or not, but I don't think it's entirely fair to suggest he do.

Title: Re: Next Color Separation Project - Guy by P.O.T.S.
Post by: davismaximus on November 18, 2012, 03:09:14 am
Like DivineWolf said, I'm doing this patch for POTS' Guy, mainly because that's the one I use.  With that said, I do like that stance better than the original, and it probably wouldn't be much trouble to separate both of them and let you choose which one to use.

My only concern is that he looks a bit slimmer in his CFE stance, and that might look a bit strange transitioning into his other animations.  Has anyone else done a Guy with his CFE sprites?  I'd like to compare the two and see what I can work with.

the scruffy sff patch used the new stance, and it seems to match up perfectly fine with other animations as far as I can tell

Thanks Koldskool, I had one similar to that on the 1st page, but yours has better contrast.

the scruffy sff patch used the new stance, and it seems to match up perfectly fine with other animations as far as I can tell
Alright cool, I'll check it out.  If I do end up doing that one too, I'll probably include both stances in the .sff and include a patched .cns file so people can choose.

Anyway, after knocking out a couple animations today, I had the idea to include a mask in Guy's separation.  It's a fairly subtle addition, but I think it looks pretty cool and would work well for some interesting stuff.  Completely optional of course, as you can just set the colors to his skin tone.

Post by: davismaximus on November 25, 2012, 06:18:15 pm
As well as working on Guy's separation, I've been editing ShinRyoga's Mario sprites to have a more Capcom-ish feel.  The plan is to use them for SeanAltly's Capcom Vs. The World project, so hopefully they're up to snuff.

Here's a preview of what's done so far, along with a comparison of old and new:
(http://i.imgur.com/7k0yJ.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/6wUww.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/k2nWm.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/pm3Ob.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/XyMdQ.gif)
Note that these aren't final, as I'll be making some adjustments here and there, such as the feet movement on the stance.

C&C definitely welcome, as I'm pretty new to sprite editing.

Sorry for the double-post, but I've got some good news concerning the Epoch of Anarchy update.  I was able to recover the majority of the files from my hard drive crash a few months ago.  I'm basically right where I left off, barring a few things like fonts, templates, and system sounds.  For anyone unaware, here's a few outdated screens:

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

So on top of all the other stuff, I'll have some updates to EOA 2.0 in the near future.

Thanks guys, I know it's taken forgoddamnever, but I'm working to finally get this update finished.  Here's a couple updated screens:

New, hopefully final, Title Screen
(http://i.imgur.com/mg4Lg.png)
New Vs. Screen concept
(http://i.imgur.com/pB8Mz.png)

The new Vs. screen is a little idea I've been messing around with.  Still fucking around with the template so it works well with big and small characters alike, as well as making it relatively easy for everyone to make their own.  The red lines move upwards, while the blue lines move downwards to give it the illusion of movement.  I really wish we could use animated portraits, or at least add some velocity to them or something.

On top of the screenpack stuff, here's a couple new animations for Mario:

I sent out a couple beta copies of the EOA update to get some feedback and make sure I didn't overlook any details.  Barring anything too drastic, I should have a release by next weekend.  In the meantime I'll be working on some of the feedback and a nice little portrait pack to go along with the release.  Jesustittyfuckingchrist it feels good to almost have this thing done, lol.

With EOA done and out the door (http://"http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/epoch-anarchy-2-0-146539.0.html"), I can focus on Mario and Guy full-time.  All of Mario's standing punches and kicks are almost done, just need to finish up the Hard Kick:
(http://i.imgur.com/jC1B9.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/ykith.gif)

Not so sure about the motion blur, I may take it out if it doesn't fit with everyone else.

On a somewhat related note, Sean and I haven't talked about a move set for Mario, and I've just been knocking out some basic stuff.  If anyone has any ideas for possible new moves, I may be able to edit some existing sprites to accommodate them.

I'll try my hand at his Final Smash for sure.  It would make a great substitution for his other LVL 3, which I wasn't planning on doing.  As for the cape moves, you're referring to the one that knocks back projectiles right?  I haven't played SSB in forever, so I don't remember if there's any others.

Alright cool, thanks for the info.

Another stupid question, but would that move even be possible in Mugen?  Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone who does that besides Rose, and I'm unsure if any of her Mugen incarnations can knock back an opponents projectile.  I sprite like old people fuck, so it would kind of be a waste to sprite a move that wouldn't work properly.

Unless I'm completely missing something, Mario doesn't alternate hands like Gouken or the DBZ gang.  Check at around 1:00 -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xazBZ_BDPq4
If you're talking about when he hops back and waves his arms, then yeah, I haven't gotten to that part yet.

@CyberWolfJV:
Thanks, that will come in handy.  Do you happen to have his cape special done in a similar fashion?

@G.o.D.:
I know, I'll fix the shading last.  I wanna get the actual animation part down first, then mess with the details.

Thanks RMH, unfortunately Guy's on hold for a while as I finish up Mario and another project.  I will get back to finishing him though, I'm still salty that I never finished Gambit.

@varo_hades:
Sorry, but I'm not gonna do a separation patch for Adon.  He was part of a poll I had up and lost to Guy.  I suppose I should change the first post.

Huh... Pretty interesting stuff actually.

Mega Man's color separation is looking good.

And those Mario sprites look really nice.

Also, for new animations... What you could do is this.
http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=32721

Download this, and then download Mario's Brawl files from here.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/p01chjw1j1k4zuz/9cdMSys0R7/fighter/mario

One of his models (for example, FmitMario00.pac), and that "FitMarioMotionEct.pac" file.

After that, open up Mario's model with that program, preview it, then in the previewer open the animation file... You can look at all of Mario's animations frame by frame for reference.

Yes, I'm still working on it, albeit very very slowly.  I recently got a new job and blah blah blah, haven't had much free time lately.  If I'm still working on Mega Man by the time you're done with Lynn, hit me up, but don't feel like it's a priority for you.  I will get him done in due time.

Also, thanks for the links _Data_Drain_8 weeks later, but I'm pretty much done with Mario's sprites, unless Sean, MC, or anyone else using them needs some other sprites in the meantime.

Soooooooo I've been thinking about doing some new stuff for Dr. Doom recently, including some more color separation, as well as separating his effects from his base sprites.  The point being with the former would be to get some more of his various costume iterations, and the latter making it possible to do some hi-res effects for him (@Froz: maybe?).

Anyway...here's a concept of the new separation, which isn't finalized yet, hence it's not indexed:
What's newly separated:

*Mainly for when he acquired the Infinity Gauntlet

And here's a small preview of his effects being separated:
(http://i.imgur.com/XFFkreF.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/mt0nvOL.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/aPy1pLc.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/EYmzxJC.gif)

So gimmie some opinions and I'll toss up a poll in a few to gauge everyone's thoughts.

Well it's, seems like a complicated CS, my opinion is: Since you already CSed Doom, why not CS someone else? I understand you want to give him something new and separate his FX from the sprites, and I totally agree with that part.
But why CS him again? You could just separate his FX, and hi-res them so any coder can make how he deserves.
But I think you're giving yourself too much work IMO, just saying...

Title: Re: Davismaximus' WIP thread - Mega Man Color Separation
Post by: davismaximus on September 08, 2013, 06:10:46 am
But why CS him again?

Basically Doom was my first attempt at CS'ing, and I didn't separate everything I originally wanted to.  With Felicia and Bison I tried to do as much as possible, without messing with the original sprites (i.e. being able to have the classic palettes with nothing out of place).  Since I was planning on separating Doom's effects anyway...why not go ahead and do some more colors in the meantime?

@A$AP Buckus:
As much as I would love to try CS'ing dude, I really don't think I have the patience for that.  Just looking at that sprite gives me a headache, lol.

IMO that CS is an overkill, too much unneeded stuff. Separating the effects would have been enough. Is your stuff anyways so if you wanna do it go ahead but the current separation is fine as it is.

Did a few palettes to show off what can be done:
First three are different iterations of Doom; Infinity Gauntlet, Manga, and Ultimate.  Last two are custom.

As of right now I'm just working on separating the effects.  I'll more than likely have to re-do his entire palette, and I might have to have a separate one just for his effects.

Edit:
More effect stuff:

Also, separate front-hand(Infinity Gauntlet wearing) effects from the back-hand effects. Front hand wearing Infinity Gauntlet could use different effects, i think.
Title: Re: Davismaximus's WIP thread - Dr. Doom 2.0

Separating the effects for each hand seems like too much work for such little gain.  Anyway, here's some more stuff:

With the first animation, I'm not sure if I should leave the white flash on Doom, or just keep it on the effect itself.

I'll work on it, just noticed the shading surrounding the flash effect changes as well.  Maybe I'll just do two versions and let whoever uses them decide what works best.

Working on the back dash right now and I've hit a bit of a snag.  Any spriters wanna take a crack at filling in the blank space?
It doesn't have to be perfect, as it will be partially covered by his thrusters, but it's a bit out of my ability.

Nevermind, I found what I needed.  I'm dumb and didn't see the extra sprites in the .sff file.  Yay.

Title: Re: Davismaximus's WIP thread - Dr. Doom 2.0
Post by: davismaximus on September 11, 2013, 02:58:09 am
I believe that's the only sprite with that problem, so it's not that big of a deal.  I was able to edit the frame (http://i.imgur.com/jtjp4Df.png) after it pretty decently, and the animation just cycles between the two with only the flames moving.  If I can get help with that one sprite the rest won't be a problem, otherwise I'll stick it at the back of the pile and try to edit it myself later.

The highlights should be on Doom's sprites, separate from the effects. For one thing, it's still part of Doom (it's just like someone was shining a flashlight or something on him), and should remain directly integrated with his sprites. Plus, if the effects were hi-resed the flash would just have to be reintegrated back to Doom anyway.

Title: Re: Davismaximus's WIP thread - Dr. Doom 2.0
Post by: davismaximus on September 15, 2013, 05:31:59 am
Gotcha, I was just gonna leave the flash on Doom and separate it from the effect, having three potential layers.  That way if anyone wants to hi-res the flash, they have that option.

I agree, that Cody palette is pretty damn cool.  I did notice though that the shades of the "mask" should be the same as the rest of his face.  Also, the last two shades of his arms, hands, and inner mesh are the same color, removing some depth.  I'm digging that D.D. pal as well.

Here's some more stuff:

Title: Re: Davismaximus's WIP thread - Mario Stuff
Post by: davismaximus on December 04, 2013, 04:35:47 am
I was bored today, so I decided to dick around with some newer stuff for Mario.  I was never a big fan of his walking cycles, and after removing a couple frames from his run and messing with the timing, I got something somewhat serviceable:
While doing that, I got an idea for a possible move/gameplay mechanic.  In most Mario games, he's able to pick up different objects (turtle shells,bomb-ombs, etc.) and throw or kick them at enemies.  This could vary his playstyle quite a bit, and possibly serve as a UT in CVtW.
(http://i.imgur.com/jgFEP7M.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/Vq6zPMO.gif)
The animations are obviously a WIP, and I'll probably have to separate the front arm from the rest of the animation.

The idea of picking a Mario related object is pretty neat. Just Bob-ombs & shells or perhaps other objects?? I say this cause those are the most common ones.

The animation looks okay. With the way that they are animated I imagine that Mario walks with a bit of a hop so I'm sure that it'll better in game. The bomb carrying sprite look good to me.

While looking a some of your newest Guy edits I noticed that his teeth still show up while wearing his "mask". Is this something that needs to be fixed or can it be avoided by making the lightest tone in their mask palette darker?

Off the top of my head:
-Bomb-ombs
-Shells (different colors could have different properties)
-Piranha Plant
-Possibly be used as a throw, although he's probably too short for it to look good
-POW Block*
-Veggies*

*Technically holds these overhead, but whatever.

There's probably a few more but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Is this something that needs to be fixed or can it be avoided by making the lightest tone in their mask palette darker?

Yes, you can just color his teeth the same color as the "mask" I just got lazy with some of his palettes.  I'll have to make an updated template one of these days showing that and a few other small things.

I'm assuming you're talking about the "lightning punches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbHsgbVkI7c)" he does before the fireball?  If they match up well with Sean's fireball animation, sure why not.  I'd rather not do the same animation twice if I don't have to.

For the record, I'm planning on releasing the patch first, then all the supplemental animations with the sprite pack later on.

Hi Davismaximus! I just want to say that I'm really excited for your Mario and truly can't wait for it to be done! I've always had a sort of problem with the sprites for ShinRyoga & NeOaNkH's Super Mario simply for it's looks, but your work completely fixes that! I appreciate your editing and wish you the best of luck!  :2thumbsup:

Thanks dude, I just saw your thread today...sucks that you already did 200 sprites before seeing this one.  Mario is done for the most part, I'm just gonna knock out his hammer swing animation and I'll "officially" release the sprites.  Any new animations for him like the Object Grab Carry n Toss will be added later.

Aw it's no biggie, really. I had alot more to do, and it's better to have found out now. If I would've spent more time on it just to find this, I wouldn't be too glad. I'm just so positively amazed to see someone way more talented, picking up Mario. As a long time fan of Mugen, you've no idea the wait I've had for a Mario as nicely sprited as yours! I'm sure the Mugen community feels the same way. It makes me real happy to hear that your almost done too! Can't wait, thanks alot for this! :D

On a separate note, you said you're releasing the sprites. Does this mean that you want someone else to make a new Mario character using your new sprites, or is the new char the release?

Thanks!

Just doing the sprites, I can't code for shit.  So far I believe Sean and MC2 are using them, and I sent them to Tylor as well for his POTS version.
Speaking of which:

A few more frames and some clean up and I'll release the sprite pack for everyone.

So I'm coming up to the one part of this separation I've been dreading, which is Guy's Kage Shissou teleportation dealie.  Here's what it looks like in-game:
This is the first frame that took me a good 10-15 minutes to get looking fairly decent, along with a couple of palettes:
(http://i.imgur.com/QNsbqgj.png) (http://i.imgur.com/iQwKiTm.png) (http://i.imgur.com/UqlQoYZ.png)
Compared with the original:
(http://i.imgur.com/038W8SO.png) (http://i.imgur.com/ZkP4lf0.png) (http://i.imgur.com/PoV63E3.png)

As you can see, neither one is perfect, but I'd like to get some opinions on this going forward.  Should I just quit being a little cunt and edit all 12 frames by hand, or is there an easier method?  I tried converting to RGB and adding motion blur, then re-indexing to the CS'ed palette.  Unfortunately that resulted in a jumbled mess of colors, and would take just as long, if not longer, to do.

I suppose I'm not too worried about this since the animation is so fast, and even the original has plenty of color errors, but I'd like to hear what you guys think before I get to this animation fully.

Usually what I'd do is search desperately for an easier method, but sometimes you just gotta get down and do things manually!...Unfortunately..

My first instinct was to find out how the effect was made and then replicate it using one of your separated sprites as a base. If you can't contact the person that made the effect then I believe that you are in for a tedious task.

The Yang teleport I think make for better teleportation frames anyway! Much better then blur/diffuse effects applied to sprites. As long as the patch would still work I would want to go that route!

Here's the first half of the teleport:
(http://i.imgur.com/wpRG37W.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/wsaoMAy.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/7gG0ePK.gif)
There's still a couple little things I can fix, namely with his left hand and upper trim, but I think it's heading in the right direction.

@TheSnackist:
I'll see what I can come up with when the animation's finished.  After checking all of Yang's frames, that method will probably be just as big of a pain in the ass.

You got the Ibuki one wrong. If you one your palette to look SF3-like you could always divide the amount of colors by two. Then, the first three would be your normal colored tones, the next three will be your pastel tones or the SF3 gradients. Talking about the Ibuki one of course.

Also, the first and second shade in the shirt top and the rest lack contrast.

Just my two cents, but Pocket Fighter colors don't need pastel colors. If you go the SF3 route then look at sabockee's SF3 palette fore where to put your pastel colored shadows because that's about as perfect as your going to get with this sprite.

Im interested on seeing how you handled the black outline all over the sprites?? You got rid of that?? The separation looks really amazing :D

Nah the outline is still there, I wanted to save myself the headache of having to meticulously trace over every part.

mmm I see, yeah, getting rid of that outline is pretty down right impossible without having too make huge guesses on the shading (checked that spriteset a while ago). Even the black outline could be good cause of the metallic nature of the character.

Yeah, good work saving that humongous headache.

Ummm...Is this actual template, because one of the leg colours is shared with the outline ?

Sheeeeeiiiiiit, must've fucked up indexing with the new template.  Anyway, it's fixed and I updated the link in my previous post, along with adding the template to the 1st post in the thread.

Ah, nice nice. The outline is barely noticeable with some other color schemes and thats excellent :D The second and third palettes are absolutely sexy, holy shit.

So I've been doing a little fuckery and thought it might be cool to give Colossus one or more of them fancy schmancy palette cycles that are all the craze.  It would make it so that his shiny metal parts...uh...shine.  Here's a little proof of concept, just to give a rough idea of what I'm talking about (timings and etc are not final).

I'm not 100% on how to accomplish it, and I'll have to go through JMorph's Chun-Li to wrap my little brain around it, but I thought it might be a cool little addition.

it would involve pal switching which means every individual change to the pal has to exist as it's own pal. That's how gill did it. I didn't bother with that because of two reasons:

1. Are you kidding me why on earth would I bother
2. No one cares that much as long as it plays as it should.
2.1. pals would be a nightmare

If anything, I was going to add it as an optional patch.  I was thinking palettes number 10,11, and 12 would have the shiny shit added.  I prefer the original way of dealing with palettes myself.

Anyway, here's everyone's favorite part of color separation jobs - a new template!  I only separated out the effects for his hard punch and grab toss thing, so no updates are needed (unless you wanted).

Also, I've been knocking out a bunch of sprites today, probably about halfway done.

Amazing APOCALYPSE palette. I wonder if he'd make a good base for a sprite edit of sorts :O

What I mean is each time the color changes it has to be another pal. So if the effect was say 6-7 unique color shifts. That's 6-7 pal for every single supported pal. This also has to be hard coded into the char

It wouldn't be too bad, with just 3 combined palettes, and only the metal parts changing (and even then only changing order). Shouldn't be too bad to crank out 21~ pals for that.

I'm not 100% on how to accomplish it, and I'll have to go through JMorph's Chun-Li to wrap my little brain around it, but I thought it might be a cool little addition.
if you do, don't use the Chun-Li on my site, use the beta (http://network.mugenguild.com/jmorphman/characters/sneakpreview/Chun-Li.7z) where the color shifting code isn't quite as stupid
Title: Re: Davismaximus's WIP thread - Butt Commander: Gimmie palettes
Post by: davismaximus on December 24, 2014, 11:51:33 pm
Thanks guys

@Kamekaze:
I know what the pal switching entails, which is why it would be a completely separate download (.sff,.def,.cns, etc.) from just the .sff patch.  That way people that don't want to deal with all that shit don't have to.  I don't expect you to include it in the character itself, so I'd just update the patch whenever you did any updates on your end.

@Jmorphman:
Thanks, I'll check out that version, as I only glanced at the code for the time being.

Anyway, there's less than 100 sprites to go, so gimmie some more palettes for the release, hopefully within a week or so.
