Title: Stage Discussion
Post by: Neocide on October 24, 2012, 11:06:52 pm
I've reached a point where it's time to discuss stages. Talking to iced made me think that sb based stages might be out seeing as how the backgrounds are a bit small. so I'm making this topic to see if I can get people with suggestions and ideas for me and NoZ for stages.

I want to make at least 16 stages and try to get most of the landmarks in. My list of stages that are mandatory;

What's Done :

- Islands
- Cell games
- Road
- Earth Plains
- Earth Plains (Mid)
- Earth Plains (Night)

What's left:

- Namek
- Namek Coastline
- Dead Namek
- First fight
- Room of space and time
- ??????
- Kami's Look out
- Islands (Night)
- Islands (Storm)
- Snow
- Forest
- Mountain Top
- Roshi's House
- Destroyed City

Up Next:

- Dead Namek

Mr.Satans arena maybe?
He could be in the background

Maybe you could add an original idea for some.

For instance, maybe an anime styled background with some dragon ball implemented ideas to them. Just an idea:

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

Potentially editing something like that with your own twist on it. Look Goku flying around on the nimbus, or just a dragon ball styled city in the background.

I know it's been done in mugen before, but maybe your own twist on android's destruction to the city, also where Vegeta fought Android 18 potentially (referring to the tenkaichi games)

Post by: Neocide on October 24, 2012, 11:26:05 pm
yea my initial idea was to rip backgrounds from the show and add a filter to them, and then add stuff along with them to sorta mesh. Like I did with my sig.

But yea I want to take as many scenes from the show as possible for stages. If I could find the right resources I'd make the stage where vegeta and 18 were jumping from car to car.

If anyone knows good terrain from games (rocky floors, cliffs etc) please let me know. I am a bit swamped on looking everywhere and trying to code and sprite. It's very time consuming @_@

Okay So since I started working on stages I thought I'd post in here instead of the progress board.

So Stage editing\spriting has started, worked on cell game's floor, seemed to be the most work for the cell Games, which I've decided to try first,
after this I'll do the forest stage.

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

not 100% on the tile colors, but I'll figure it out later. Next up will be the background stuff (hills, grass etc)

Thinking of props for the stage, atm, I'm thinking of satan's men hiding behind a rock, with their heads popping up. A news chopper (if anyone has sprites of a chopper please lemme know)

As of Now I am entirely on stage work so this thread should be Quite active with activity from me.

right now I'm starting with Shin b Stages I'm going to edit, then I'm going to begin editing from actual scenes from the show.

Spoiler: Stage List (click to see content)

I might Sprite Guild members (In Ap) in one of the alternate stages (probably the Hell stage), sorta be easter eggs in the stage to find where everyone is.

You can get the cliff and mountain stages from MVC, you can get the grassy plains from elena sf3 stage. I suggest checking out real bout because it also has a lot of useable content.

Maybe you could edit the one from Big Bang Beat? IIRC it's one-two solid color(s) so it shouldn't be too hard to recolor/add news info on it.

Post by: Neocide on August 27, 2014, 01:55:11 am
oh that can work, since it'll be way farther in the background.

Also If anyone at all can help me with ripping stage materials from some games (the alpha series, the vs series, marvel, last bout) it would help me tons, I have the stages I need so if someone is willing I can give the list, also Iced can as well.

Anything specific you want from those games? I'm not that great at ripping but i may be able to help you with getting what you need.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: Neocide on August 28, 2014, 01:24:37 am
yea I have a list of the stages I need and the parts for each stage. atm  it's mainly floors, and some backdrops, I have a full master list for what materials I need for stages. Mainly I just want to grab ones with terrain close to db ( rocks, cliffs, plains, islands)  so the stages I know for sure I need..

Alpha series -

Venezuela (SFA2)
Hong Kong (SFA3) (Mainly the far background)
Thailand Adon (SFA2) (floor, palm trees, fat background)
Thailand - Sagat (SFA2) (floor)
Usa - Guile (SFA3 ) (Far background, the mountains)
Mexico - T hawk - (floor,background)
Cave - Gouki (SFA3)

SF III

Oro (Second Imapct ) (floor, background)
Africa - Elena (3rd strike) (floor)
Unknown - Gill (The New Generation) (background)

Marvel\Vs series

Death Valley  - (MvSF,XvSF)
The Hilltop - (MvSF,XvSF) (Floor,background)
The Cataract (MvSF,XvSF)(floor,background)
High cliffs (MvC)  (Floor,Background)

Islands - Iceman (X-men) (floor, background)
Mountains - Wolverine (MSH) (Background)
Savage  Land (X-men)

I think thats all the ones I can think of. There might be some real bout ones I'm forgetting.

Ok.

Like I said i'm not really the greatest at ripping anything so i couldn't provide full stages, but I've got a few renders saved you may find helpful.

Was messing around with stage stuff yesterday and thought about you.

I know it's not on the list but i thought it could help, it's the background from Alfred's stage in Real Bout Fatal Fury 2.

Background with sky:

In case you wanted just the mountains, version without sky:

Just in case the quality or something with images mess up here's a quick link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/w2dnn6

In game this background with the sky had an animated sun effect on it, I figured you'd rather have just a tileable piece like that. If you'd like the sun effect i can get that for you as well.

I'll start keeping more of the stuff you listed in mind while i'm tinkering with stuff.

Some more stuff off your list, I edited a few of them though. I can send the original floor if you want the bg rocks for Venezuela.

Edited Venezuela Floor:

Venezuela BG:

SFA3 Guile:

Guile Edit (Sorry about rough edges):

SFA3 Hong Kong Original Sky:

Edited to be tileable:

You could make a small colored box sprite the same color as the sky in the pic and then tile it and extend it, and add your own styled clouds above it. This is assuming you'd even be making some kind of moving stage, you may not even use this, but it was an idea.

These are fantastic, You are a god send. The rough edges is np, I can fix that.

and yes, I want to do a few "animated" stages in general, I want my stages to feel "alive" so to speak. Once I finish the current projects I'm working on (I'm hoping by mid next month) I'll put some rough draft stage concepts together.

I didn't mention on my list, but any stages that feature animated water would be nice as well. mainly in the backdrop.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion

Glad i could help out!

by animated water in backdrop, do you mean water like in the Venezuela stage? or just any water stuff in general. cause i know i can find lots of water stuff via snk
Title: Re: Stage Discussion

think of a coastline, for islands.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: GLB on September 16, 2014, 07:57:54 am
would the water from sfa2 rose stage work? i can get two separate water animations from it, one that's further back and one that's closer, in front of and behind the boat.

if not i use a program that animates water quite easily, so if you have a static image you think is more fitting i could attempt to animate it myself.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: Neocide on September 16, 2014, 08:21:38 am
that water works,I don't have any water images myself. a waterfall would be cool.

Title: Re: Stage Discussion

Ok. I'll rip the water from that stage and look around for some other water animations that could help you out. I'll send you some stuff on Saturday most likely.   :)

Had a little free time today actually. Sorry about double posting!

Here's some water animations, they're all in PNG format.

hope those help! I'll look into SNK stuff more for waterfalls since i couldn't find much. But I think Ninja Masters might have some stuff you could use.

Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: Neocide on September 24, 2014, 12:11:32 am
thin rain would be nice, thin semi long, as for snow, I have no concrete idea.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: GLB on September 24, 2014, 01:36:22 am
ok, the program i use kept making the gif look weird, it looks like it doesn't loop but it will loop in mugen, I usually save the project as image files though. Before I send the image files I want to make it's how you'd like it to be.

So how's this?

Also, in the future whenever you put the stage together and you know what stage you're adding the rain too, lemme know and send me the floor you're gonna use and i can potentially add some puddle effects from the rain.

Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: Neocide on September 24, 2014, 01:41:16 am

Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: GLB on September 24, 2014, 01:48:58 am
Here you go then:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/3yasxi

For the snow, you could do like, some white dots on a black bg, maybe add a blur or a glow to them, make it like 2 dots diagonally apart, and save that one small image as a sprite, and make one more a completely different set up, then tile them both with different velocities and direction. I can work on some later on in the week, I'll also browse some games that could have rain and snow that may be less flashy and more fitting for your project.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: Neocide on September 24, 2014, 02:44:03 am
if you can think of anything else feel free to throw it in, I don't have any final set in stone props for any stages.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: GLB on September 29, 2014, 01:19:59 am
I made some tileable snow, tested in mugen and it looks alright, though it will be a plethora if you duplicate it and switch up speed/directions.

Just index it and it should work fine.

I was gonna add other stuff but I haven't come across anything yet. If I find something that may work I'll get it to you asap.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: Neocide on September 29, 2014, 02:28:55 am
wonderful. Stars would be cool too. and asteroids? if that's too much out of your wheelhouse. atmosphere stuff in general would be coo.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: GLB on October 01, 2014, 03:50:09 am
Stars turned out really nice, tested them in mugen and with tile they looked good. Asteroids are a bit out of my wheelhouse, but i did try to work with it a bit, since i couldn't edit or create my own I ripped a .gif and found a random sprite sheet that could be of assistance.

I also included a few planets i messed around with (color wise) that you might like.

I'll keep on looking/working!

Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: GLB on October 03, 2014, 03:58:51 am
I've made several HR clouds for my stages, I'm sure I could just reduce their size for LR, or do you prefer a more in game style? I usually just tile my clouds with velocity for moving so a single static cloud should suffice.

I'll tinker around and see what i come up with later on.  :)

Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: GLB on October 04, 2014, 04:25:23 am
here be dat custom lightning:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ogyimq

i got a set in there that's indexed already cuz I had planned to use it then never did.

or like dusty wind?

All the custom i could come up with that are a very HR looking effect (particle illusion dust)

however, I know KOF (2001?) has a desert stage that should have usable sprites. I'll look into it tomorrow afternoon!
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: Neocide on October 04, 2014, 06:43:06 am
To be honest, that's fine, kinda want to mix and match with that sort of stuff to see what comes out looking best. While I'm aiming more towards daeron's style for the most part, I do want to branch out and try something in between LR and HR or just blend some things into it.

My mind works in mysteriously awesome ways :p
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: GLB on October 05, 2014, 06:46:28 am
Awesome. I got a few things i could use if you need other specifics then! Since HR is more my style.  :cool4:

Bad news: Dust animation turned out to be about 601 frames, and super color lossy when indexed. It'd be quite annoying to edit the color/size of those, unless you could find a smaller loop point, and deal with the loss. In which case i'll send it to you if you wanna give it a shot.

Good news: Got PCX versions of KOF 2000 Desert Storm sand for ya. Hopefully that works out, i didn't put them in the same image dimensions though, they're cropped so alignment may be an issue unless you edit them. If all else fails for dust, you can always take a fog sprite and recolor it to be more sandy and just code it to move a lot faster than a regular fog.

Also ripped some really cool HR lightning for you, only about 32 frames so editing it (to be smaller) wouldn't be THAT bad.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/8rlj1q

I can get a lot of cool animations like the lightning. Downfall is, they usually spit out about 4-7 hundred+ layers and finding a good loop point is not very easy unless you've got a photographic memory, or I haven't learned the proper trick yet lol.

Unfortunately in the source game they cut off like that. I could attempt to re-size it if you're trying to get more jumping space out of it though. Really dig the base you got so far! The water on the right is a pixel or two off of the water on the left though.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: Neocide on October 16, 2014, 01:35:48 am
yea I noticed about the water but it's a mockup so yea. and shit, I'd like super jump to be possible, but with the trees cut and plopped on the floor I'm probably going to have to remove them entirely. If you can find palm tree's (I got ken's tree already) so I can go back over this.
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: GLB on October 16, 2014, 02:03:51 am
I'll try making some trees for you later on, or think of some games with some that i can steal from. I'll keep them separate from the floor so you can have deltas on your trees.

I have been showing progress to Neocide via skype I figured I'd show off the progress of the stage a little bit here as well:

I'm going to have to resize the water to fit the entire stage (shouldn't be too hard, it's only about 8 frames.) Probably going to extend the height a bit as well since it seems a bit small in the shot. Mountains could also use some cleaning, then I'll add my sky/clouds and then apply/fix superjump.

It's pretty much all done besides that.

Everything seen in the shots have their own delta except the water and the first set of mountains/dry land. So there's some nice movements going on. Water looks amazing too, i'm very proud of the outcome of that, I can't wait for that to be seen in game.  :)

I want to add another background layer of mountains or something, it still feels blank to me. Also plan to add some animals/creatures now. Birds are probably going to be in, just trying to think of which to use.

(http://i.imgur.com/gSmyfQb.png) started compiling this a bit, gonna attempt to do the pillars again tomorrow, hopefully in the same style as the floor tile. and still thinking of more things it needs, can't put my finger on it though.

Looks great so far, Neo. Can't wait to see what you come up with for that! I should have more progress on Island this weekend.  :)

WELL....

I had something half done, was just looking for big mountains to fit in the back that I can't really find, then Undo kept ruining what I did and finally psp crashed, 2 hours wasted. So I won't be working on this for a bit, because it really pissed me off.

I really really REALLY don't like working on stages.

Damn, sorry to hear that man. Take your time, work with your main priorities first. You'll get motivation with stages back again later.

If anybody is willing, I could really use some help in compiling some stage prototypes. No need to code them. I don't need full ones, but like even a start of one that would be great. if you're willing to do more work than basic compiling, like actually do some editing and whatnot I'm willing to pay a bit.

(http://i.imgur.com/0hrd3Ne.png)  Retried this again, and it came out great. (Those pillars aren't final, just have to figure out how to actually make them work with the rest of the style)

Also should reveal my surprise today.

I think he thought that those sprites haven't been ripped yet, or something...

EDIT:
Those pillars are quite brown. Cleaning them a bit and making them more white should help blend them in more :)

Nice job on that stage Neocide. The art looks super-fly! :D
As what Survivor said, maybe editing the pillars a bit more will do the job ;)
Good luck!

I actually just finished editing them entirely, change the color obviously, hopefully it all fits together.

(http://i.imgur.com/O0Nq72d.png) did the pillars just didn't add them in here, but.... something (more like someone) else is there.

He'll sorta run around the stage with his afro bobbling sorta like duck hunt dog kinda. His head will pop up a bit (to the eyes) and then he'll borough
behind the bg and pop up somewhere else. Might add the announcer and the others later too.

revamped the Island stage, think it came out pretty damn well. the mirrored mountains bugs me a little, but the stage is pretty big.

If I don't start on vegito tomorrow, I'll more than likely get started on the plains of earth or whatever the hell it's called, ie the most used fighting ground in db. I'll be editing the first post as my log on what stages are next and whatnot.

Finished Earth Plains, did 3 versions, taking a break from stages for now (these drained the crap outta me) Gonna work on vegito for now but when I go back I will do dead namek. If I can get someone to rip the lava from this stage : (http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/8822/lbmusashibg.gif)
it would help me a lot.

Ah, i like what i see <3

Maybe some animated shooting stars and the moon for the night version to make it more eye catchy and some random wind dust for the Day version.

The floor on both day timer version dont blend fully imo but concept at all looks dope.

Post by: Neocide on November 13, 2014, 07:14:51 am
yea there will be shooting stars, and I was looking for a moon, probably will just let GLB make one or something.

And yea the Floor I was trying to make more colored with the foreground rocks, I might try something with it later.

God these all look so good. I can't wait to dive into these, i'm already messing around with Cell Games a bit.

I'll see if I can try and rip the lava though, but iirc it's all with the rock layers so we'd have to remove most of it ourselves.

love it - BUT the pillars should have different sizes (bigger in the front) and a different position according to the perspective of the whole stage.

Since everyone has their own theme basically I'm gonna try to pair each fighter up with a stage This is what I'm thinking;

- Islands                            - Vegeta
- Cell games                       - Cell
- Road                                - 18
- Earth Plains                      - Final Gohan
- Earth Plains (Mid)             - Yamcha
- Earth Plains (Night)          - Piccolo
- Namek Coastline              - ?????
- Namek                             - Ginyu
- Dead Namek                    - Frieza
- First fight                         - Goku
- Room of space and time   - Training Stage
- ??????                             - ????
- Kami's Look out               - Super Buu
- Islands (Night)                - ?????
- Islands (Storm)               - Vegitto
- Snow                              - Bonus
- Forest                             - SSJ2 Gohan
- Mountain Top                  - Tien
- Roshi's House                 - Kuririn
- Destroyed City                - Trunks

that sets me at 20 stages.... Yay. GLB is going to die lmao

yea I know, and you haven't even seen the forest stage yet :V what would you suggest? (it's a throwback to his sb2\shinb stage)
Title: Re: Stage Discussion
Post by: QuickFist on November 19, 2014, 10:53:51 pm
I'd suggest Destroyed Cell Games, but I guess you don't want to make that stage twice, also can I see a pic of the sb2/shinb stage?

Destroyed cell games would look too much like the plains.
