Title: A couple of MAME cheat files for sprite ripping. (10/27)
Post by: N. on March 20, 2014, 01:56:12 am
Not too long ago, I got into trying to convert what I found in Artmoney to cheats for MAME.  I currently don't have much to offer, but you're welcome to it just the same.  These are all geared towards ripping character sprites unless noted otherwise.  I created/tested them in mame-rr-0144-test0, but they should also work with mame0152b.

Spoiler: You may not have access to the cheat option when you press Tab.  Maybe this can help. (click to see content)
Spoiler: For sound ripping, you could also use M1 to rip the sounds to some of these games. (click to see content)

Now that that's out of the way, here's cheat packs of my findings (these used to be in the spoilers, but maintaining 4 links is easier than 64+ links.  Check the spoilers for my notes, and a screenshot):

dragoon might sound ripping? you are a godsend, thank you very much! i'll have to take advantage of these sometime since all 3 of these games were things i was interested in doing things with

Still making use of the PS2 ones you did for me!

Oh wow! I don't have any interest in ripping from these games, but I want to tell you that this is a really great share!
I hope you do a lot more of these!

You're like one of my artmoney idols around here. XG is the other =p

just a minor note, i could only get the survival arts cheats to work on the USA version of the game, it doesn't seem to apply to the world revision. but since these versions seem to be exactly the same it's not really important. also 'hide lifebar and scores' only seems to hide the scores, the lifebars are still there

the dragoon might sound test is working like a dream, will try the killing blade cheats and other aspects of the other two out

Thanks, guys.  :)

【RTC】MelvanaInChains:  When did you on turn the "Hide Lifebars and Score" code?  If you turn it on after the match loads, it'll do what you just described.  Anyways, I sent you a PM about that. Just saw you got it.  ...Actually, I think is what I just mentioned, because I don't see a comment about that in my cheat file, and I didn't put that in the notes. >_<  Sorry about that.

Caddie:  That's good to hear.  You make any progress on Bridge (you mentioned something about having trouble replicating the behavior of the traffic)?  Or are you working on the other games?

Just No Point:  If someone has a game in mind, I wouldn't trying to find stuff (no promises, though).

Stalled, been too busy. I can replicate it, it's just random. It'll actually be real easy once I get a chance to get to it.

And it's all thanks to you. :)

The Magic Toaster:  I'll have to look into finding a better sound mod at some point for you then.

Gladiacloud:  It might be.  ......Hopefully, I'll have an easier time with it than The Killing Blade. I'll have to come back to this.

Just No Point: There you go.  I added some color values for you to search for in Artmoney as well.  Hopefully, I didn't mess up what you need to add to get the other addresses.

Dalek Basara:  You're welcome.  Yeah, it can be a pain sometimes.

I'd ask for some modification that allows stage ripping as well but i dont want to be a burden with that knowing that this is probably hard to implement and all. Just saying that if you ever do place that in it'd be nice.

prof. mugen:  Went and found some stuff for it.  Check the 1st post.

The Magic Toaster: Originally, I was gonna put some x/y position mods for the BG stuff in there, but I didn't want the list to be too long.  I can make a separate thing for that for you.  It's no problem.

Updated the Blood Storm cheat (had to clean up the color cycle and infinite health codes).

I wanted to ask for some requests since JNP's request was granted, and there were a several games I wanted to rip from.  I wanted to know if you could make similar codes for Blood Warrior, Wrestlemania: Arcade, and Jackie Chan: Fists of Fire.

If I'm being inappropriate, just give me a heads up.

Astra Superstars is another good fighting game, it's made by the same authors of Waku Waku 7.
Title: Re: A couple of MAME cheat files for sprite ripping.
Post by: N. on May 22, 2014, 11:14:08 pm
GMSpectre:  I've been messing around with two of those recently.
Fists of Fire:  I can check and see if what I found's usable.  Last I checked, I could hide the lifebars and sorta hide the BG.  You'd need Artmoney for color mods though.

WWF Wrestlemana: The Arcade Game:  I figured out how to hide almost everything and recolor the players/black background.  The problem is.........I've had no luck converting any of it into MAME cheats.  Also, on top of having to apply an offset to get the table to work, you have to find the color addresses every time you want to recolor them (64 for 1 player).  If you know how to use Artmoney, I can give you my table.

Blood Warrior: I'll look into it.

Gladiacloud:  I'll look into it.  I haven't had any luck with Martial Masters though.  I can remove the BG, but it's very unreliable with other characters/stages.  I can recolor the characters, but only with Artmoney.

Post by: Bastard Mami on May 22, 2014, 11:21:32 pm
if you know about programming it's very easy for most of these games to get into the for loop that draws the sprite tiles then add artificial limits to them so only the characters/bg are drawn.
Title: Re: A couple of MAME cheat files for sprite ripping.
Post by: GMSpectre on May 23, 2014, 07:22:11 am
I tried Artmoney before, but it was a bit confusing and overwhelming at times.  I could give it another attempt though so the tables may be useful.

After thinking about it, all I really would need is the background removal mods for what I need.

in terms of fists of fire, what would be really interesting is the possibility of a music disabler or sound test

for blood warrior, the newer builds of mame have volume sliders so you can isolate the noises (how these were recorded i believe (http://www.melv.thedailypos.org/comparison/kinshirocomparison.wav)), but i suppose also separating voice/sound clips would be nice too

and once again thanks for your hard work, not many people with your skill would take on games like this and i'm totally grateful you're willing to do so
Title: Re: A couple of MAME cheat files for sprite ripping.
Post by: N. on May 25, 2014, 05:37:16 am
GMSpectre:   Yeah, it's a pain to use at first.  It doesn't help that a couple of the default options can make it more frustrating to use.
I Added Jackie Chan in Fists of Fire.  What I found to hide the BG ended up not working, but I was able to find something that messes with the stage zoom.  I'll have to come back to it at some point for dealing with the text at the top of the screen and sound/music ripping.  Blood Warrior may take longer though.  The game has a tendency to crash the emulator on me.

【RTC】MelvanaInChains:  Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure how MAME handles sounds/music yet, and I'm kinda second guessing how reliable the RAM search is because of WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game, (found a timer mod in Artmoney, verified I found it using MAME's RAM search, but it doesn't work.  I have a cheat file that has a working timer mod, but the address it has isn't even listed in the RAM search).

As for Astra Superstars: Wasn't able to find something to hide the *lifebars yet, but I made cheats that can recolor the characters and the BG (tested it on Satan Volte's stage, turns out it works on almost all the others).  Considering messing around with the character color mods (because of how they handle the alternate color selection, it's possible to give a character 4 custom outfit colors.).  Haven't gotten around to looking for the other stuff yet.

*Unless you count a bunch of addresses that could remove the names.....tile by tile. D:

Hmm.....Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game's still missing some stuff, but I've got something for The Eye of Typhoon (3DO version) that's been sitting around for almost a year.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/9noa7e

What's going in in the screenshot:
The lifebars/score/timer/scrolls are recolored to 0000, hiding them (0001 is black).
The transparent border to Powell is recolored 7C1F.
The brightness to the BG has been lowered to the point where it's all black.  I recall it kinda being possible to recolor the BG, but being far more trouble than it was worth.
Some minor rescaling to the BG was done, because the edges have that afterimage thing that happens in MUGEN when you have a BG with nothing in it.
The stage modifier is set to Sauri's stage (some stages have animated BG elements that ignore the brightness mod).

ooh 3d0 tables? interesting i'll have to look into that (and a friend was interested in making natasha so)

regarding the jackie chan table, for the most part everything seems to be working fine but i can't seem to get the 'jump to start of match' code to work, as in the cheat  in question doesn't seem to be actually selectable, is there something i'm missing?

This might be a little odd for me to request this but since this will benefit with good lookin' stage parts. Any chance can you make a Cheat for Tengai? Specifically one that would allow me to freeze the backgrounds and whatnot so i can rip the sprites out of there?
Title: Re: A couple of MAME cheat files for sprite ripping.
Post by: N. on May 26, 2014, 06:03:32 am
http://www.sendspace.com/file/eupinh

I'll add some more to it, depending on what is needed, but that's a start.
Everything below "Hide Something 36" isn't mine, BTW.  You should be able to disable the scrolling and reposition the BG layers (which repositions where you are in the stage, BTW).  Also, there's a stage mod.  Also, this is for the world version.

Also, I think I may post an Artmoney Table for Astra Superstars for removing the lifebars.  I found some stuff outside the RAM search range that does it on the fly.  Animated things will keep flickering though, so you may end up either having to constantly pause the emulator or crop out whatever won't stay hidden.

Edit: Swapped that out with another one.

I see. could you add one to get rid of the icons and what not? Because thats kind of a big obstruction
Title: Re: A couple of MAME cheat files for sprite ripping.
Post by: GMSpectre on May 26, 2014, 10:32:17 am
I've had a lot of experience back in the day with sprite ripping (for example, using a screen capture program for the PC version of MK1 and figuring out what pallette values were for the character), and although Artmoney may take a bit for me to get used to.  I could get used to using it as I use more of the program.

Also, for what it's worth, I did a quick check with Jackie Chan codes you posted and it actually looks possible to get the sprites cleanly without changing the background color, since the sprites don't seem to use 0,0,0.  Admittedly, I just did this for Mysterious Lion, but it's really good.

Too bad about Blood Warrior though.  Those sprites were the ones I really wanted to get, since it had a lot of the stuff in a campy live action game that I love.

Post by: N. on May 27, 2014, 04:04:27 am
Ok, you should be able to get some stuff from Blood Warrior now.  What I found for the frame and state mods aren't all that useful, unless you know how to use Artmoney.  You can probably use the P1/P2 sprite Y position to get gethit and thrown frames.

This isn't for ripping purposes but for data mining purposes. Can you run Capcom vs SNK2 on anything?
I'm having a really tough time narrowing down the tick values for P1 in NullDC. If I choose the wrong value it crashes the emulator and I have to apply the offset to this emulator every time I boot it. Not to mention it takes forever to get the match going.

You don't have to use NullDC. Please add the Y axis to your artmoney table if you chose to attempt this for me. The ground level value is "0" and it will not go higher than "100"

Thank you for your time
Title: Re: A couple of MAME cheat files for sprite ripping.
Post by: N. on May 29, 2014, 09:23:30 pm
That's for the PS2 version.  If it doesn't work, do a custom address range search.  Have it around where you found the position mods.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ixojs8

I went and tried it with the NullDC version, and applying the offset didn't work.  So I found it for NullDC.  Then I got sidetracked trying to find a pointer address to C00000 because Artmoney didn't have NullDC 1.0.4 r22 as an emulator option.  If this one doesn't work, go to your x position mod and add 76H to it.

Post by: Just No Point on May 30, 2014, 05:26:25 pm
Okay, I just checked this for PCSX2. The value you found isn't the tick value. It's the frame value. But you don't have to worry about finding the tick value now that I know I can record it at 60FPS using PCSX2's built in recorder.
Once again, thank you. This is a great service you're offering in this thread!

@N.: If you're not still accepting requests that's fine.
I need to rip from Red Earth. Any cheats you think could help? Primarily removing back ground, removing bars, preventing screen scaling, and being able to select all the characters.

Removing background would be the best.
Thanks!

Bumping to mention that I've been periodically updating my post to add new cheats, and cheats geared towards stage ripping for the other games.  If any of the links are dead, let me know.

Also, I recently found a character test for Aliens Vs Predator and a secret test menu for Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, and Marvel Vs Capcom.

How did you find the secret test menus in AvP and MSH? I'm interested to learn the method and see if I can find similar stuff in other games
Title: Re: A couple of MAME cheat files for sprite ripping.
Post by: N. on August 28, 2014, 09:57:51 pm
In the Test Menu, I did an exact value search for 0002 at integer 2 bytes.  I then went into the Input test and filtered for 0004.  Sometimes I'd get 1 result, but if I didn't, I'd just go back to the Test Menu and either see if any of them changed back to 0002 or would send me to the Input Test when I changed them to 0004.  I learned this from observing how Abystus' cheats for X-Men: CotA and Street Fighter Alpha worked.

This next part is...kinda aimless and boring: I froze the value, then set it up in Artmoney so that anytime I loaded a savestate, I'd also be increasing it by 1.  This mostly worked as long as the value wasn't getting reset to 0002 (doesn't happen often, but enough that it can get annoying).  Try looking around 0000-00FF or 1000-2FFF first (for MSH, the value was 1294 and the value in my cheat file for AvP is 3192, but it turns out it was also at 11AB).
Title: Re: A couple of MAME cheat files for sprite ripping.
Post by: XGargoyle on August 29, 2014, 08:24:11 am
What's the logic behind searching for 0002 and 0004? Why not 0008 or another value? In other words, how did you decide or assume to look for 0002/0004 in the test menu?

Great to see more of these character test menus. After I found out about the one in the CPS1 SF2s that was accessible by hardware dipswitches I was wondering if similar ones existed in other games. Thanks a lot for sharing these discoveries!

XGargoyle: It was something I noticed after 2nd or 3rd game used the same values.

Felineki: You're welcome.
Title: Re: A couple of MAME cheat files for sprite ripping.
Post by: XGargoyle on August 29, 2014, 06:49:23 pm
I suppose that you entered the Test menu, searched for values, and then went to input test and filtered the addresses, with the objective of finding the exact address for each sub-tests, and with luck one of the values would open up a secret sub-test (in this case the character test), is this the process you did, right?

I did a similar thing in the past with Daraku Tenshi, but all I came up was being able to activate the debug test on the fly (no need to reboot and activate the debug sequence). I didn't follow your exact methodology, so it may be worth for me to try it once again if I unlock the hidden debug options.

Wow, awesome contribution!

I know Killer Instinct 1 was one of the first arcade games to come with its own hard drive.  Does that make it impossible (or at least different in an extremely annoying way) to get the sprites from?

Oh GOD yes!
I've been meaning to rerip from the DS series. If this is as useful as it looks like it'll be I may rerip from each individual game! Does it even include all the character's effects files like projectiles and such in test mode?

Yes, although often without the correct palette.

Ok, I updated the character test cheats to include some stuff to hide/reposition things, so you don't need to recolor everything.  Also, I added something to cycle through player/effect palettes in Darkstalkers and Night Warriors.

Edit: Hmm.......I should probably do this for the other games.

That would be great!

This thread is super awesome, maybe this will help that more chars from lesser known games pop out for mugen :)

EDIT:
I've tryed to download the Dragoon Might Cheat files, they are offline :-[

H Mr. Ton!:  I don't know, but I could check and see if I can find something.
Edit: I'll have to come back to this.
These links might provide some helpful starting points?  Then again they might be completely useless, I have no idea when it comes to this kind of thing.  The first one comes from a conversation on this forum (http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/killer-instinct-1-mame-sprite-ripping-codes-16607.0.html) from 9 years ago about ripping KI sprites from mame, and looks to be the most promising.

H Mr. Ton!:  Sorry.  I haven't looked into it because I haven't been able to get Killer Instinct to work on mame-rr (I use it for the RAM search).  I'd like to see if I can find cheats for it, but right now I don't think I can be of much help to you. ):

Cenobite 53: Reuploaded.  I'll fix the other ones. They're fixed.

Hey, N. is it possible that you could make a cheat for stage ripping from Spectral vs. Generation? I've seen a bit of the stages from a couple of videos and i got interested in them considering the fact only one stage from it exists in MUGEN.

I wasn't able to find a version that worked for mame-rr, unfortunately.

Thanks for all the awesome cheats none the less, I can't wait to see all the stuff you've made available put to use by rippers and coders.  Again, awesome contribution!

Pick a post older than your 1st post in this thread and I'll merge it to the thread so it can be the new 1st post and you'll have 2 posts to work with on page 1.

I found a couple but it wasn't easy. All of your posts are always so darn great and useful!

Heya, N. do you mind making a cheat for ripping sprites from Beast Busters? also, for Monster Mauler if by any chance theres a rom you can find that isnt fucked up?

The Magic Toaster: I somehow found an Object Test for Monster Maulers (https://www.sendspace.com/file/5nm66c) (check the 2nd post if you want to see what it looks like). Working on Beast Busters (I can pause the game and reposition 2 BG layers).

Edit: Added something to remove the text.  No luck with shadows, or cursor though (unless you want to use Artmoney).

Great work as usual, N.  I'm wondering, have you looked into Super SF2 and Super SF2 Turbo yet? I remember seeing the text for a character test menu in them when looking through the ROM. Of course that's no guarantee that the menu is still functional in there somewhere, but it makes me curious.

Since you found out much about Monster Maulers, any chance that you'll have a look at Metamoqester?

Do you think you can find a mame cheat for Ninja Warriors (Arcade), N.? The main problem I have is all characters except a few use pure black, like the background, and I totally want to rip this game.

I haven't been able to find anything to mod the colors with the RAM search.

I was able to find the black BG color in Artmoney though.  I posted instructions on how to find it, along with a cheat file that lets you repositon the BG layers, hide the bars/text, and change what stage you start at.

Monster Mauler doesn't works for me, MAME says something about color table and closes.
Btw, any change to do a Captain America and Avengers arcade game cheat?

Now I am using MAMEUI64 and this is what happens when I go to that Tool Menu and the emulator crashes

About the Cheats to appear, you just need to go to Options > Default Game Settings > Miscellaneous

Another bump, but this is because I've updated 15 cheats so that you can now recolor the BG to them (I want to do away with those "Recoloring with Artmoney" sections as much as possible).  I'm not restricted to MAME-RR's RAM search anymore (I still managed to fail at finding anything for Killer Instinct and S.V.G. though).

Anyways, I've updated the images to show these changes (no more "Wars Man", "Majin", and "Rorirorool").

Hey N., could you possible make a cheat for ripping sprites from Gekirindan? Specifically all the background Elements n' stuff on the first stage.

Dag nab it.  Thanks for trying anyway!

It looks like XBONE gives you all the character sprites when you win anyway tho, so if anyone knows how to rip them it should be a piece of cake at this point.
