Done:
* Recompiled SFF
* Made a new Small Portrait (from scratch)

To do:
* Give him a new Big Portrait with better colors
* Code sounds (must get some first)
* Start cleaning/fixing sprites for key frames
* More palettes are welcome.


Already requested permission from Shiryo, but haven't heard back from him.

GBA Ladies and gentlemen (gentlemen for the most, cuz everyone knows, 76.9% of mankind on net are male :P )
they're always like this (what did you expect,hm? perfect sprites on a gba? perfect shading, like ps2?), and if you're talking about this fishy thing like inverted colours, which causes blindness.....
didn't he say he clean and fix them? :P :P

Okay, I thought one screenshot should be pretty self explanatory, I guess not --;
P1 On the left with the sexy portrait - my version :D // P2 on the right with the messed up palette - Original version :(

If you download the original character (http://members.at.infoseek.co.jp/shinriyo/reiji.htm) you'll notice how the Palette was built for DOS Mugen, not WIN Mugen.
I fixed it! That's what I meant by Re-compiled SFF 8)

Sprites are "not that good" because they were poorly ripped from the GBA game at a smaller resolution. They were natively resized, not through Mugen code as they should have :-\ Last phase of my fixing the character will involve retouching some sprites to make him look sexy. By retouching I mean cleaning the edges, removing some colors that are on incorrect areas, giving him good proportions in some anims, sexier face/hair, adding a few frames for animations with choppy transitions, and so on.

I will add sounds!  You guys are focusing on the wrong things >_<
Bottom line is - Download the original character to feel the same impotence about the kickass amount of potential this character has.


For the record:

One more thing guys. I can promise you this much: PROGRESS WILL BE SLOW.
Also, I'll post dowload links when worthy improvement over the last version has been made, to keep track of the fixes and leave behind a better version than the original one currently online. I guess posting a link for the first beta w/fixed palette is in order. Will do when I fix the Big Portrait.

Will check the original char later, but that small portrait does kick ass.  Will he be getting any code revamping?

I really don't know where I picked the format from, but I like things tidy :)

Code revamping will only take place if I learn enough Mugen Coding, or if I get any help from the experts. I'm pretty much at ZERO when it comes to coding - I'm specially concerned about the currently messed up mirror helpers :-X

Get the original gba rips, then run them through a different filter, hq2x + repalettizing  or sacale 2x come to mind,but they are limited to 2x  you can also try mine, which does not has that limit.

Fate has spoken.

The flip of a coin has decided the current project of patching up this character has ceased. It will be now built from the ground up using several templates and open sourced materials. The sprites will be edited into a decent enough resolution (Native to 133% just to translate, or 140% to make him actually taller, since apparently he's as short as a teenager) and the code will be done from scratch with a few cosmetic changes here and there.

I guess it'll be all about the waiting. After resizing through [E]'s program (thanks mang) all the frames will be manually retouched to lose the pixelized look, and some even will be completely re-drawn into new animations. Some transition frames will be added and all in all will kick ass. Oh, and he'll have sexy hair, because his hair is supposed to be bitchin sexay.

Will let you know more as it develops.

i don't think he does either, but something about the palette and some of the shading style doesn't look very kof to me. i'm not really complaining though, i think the current shading and color style is better than kof's

Kinda odd to say but I think it should keep the color limit...KOF style sprites almost lose that feel they have when the color count goes over 16.

Raposo: First we'll resize all the sprites, and then split into several batches. I'll send you a PM in a couple of days. Don't worry about the "styles clashing". Even after I receive your sprites, I might try to make them all come together as I see fit. Not that I don't trust you or anyone, but for uniformity's sake to be fair.

Please screw the original kof colorlimit and give him dark outlines in the pants and more skin tones :)

I showed a sprite in RandomSelect a couple years back. I mentioned the character several times in different threads :P
About skin tones, actually he already has 4, which are enough I would say... they're just applied incorrectly. Fixable.
Outlines on the pants are a bit harder to define, I'll keep the count to 4 as well, just make palettes with more contrast.

some sprites go all the way to 6 tones for a single color (98kim and goro's pants), though 5 is more than enough, and even 4 works for most cases.

4 tones for the skin works good, but I think is better to use 5 tones for the pants, to make him look more KOF and less NGBC.

But I like it the way the hair looks with 2 colors :worried: You had to check the only place I left some squareish pixels, but you missed the fingers on the fist, the head from scratch, the torso muscles definition, the re-positioning of the shoulders (as it will be done for most if not all frames) you nitpick >:(  ... you have a good eye

he need another color for the hair...
also a palette with more contrast...

The problem here is that the character does look very dated if those changes are made. Looks pale, like something taken out of World Heroes or something else 16 bit from the early nineties :P
SNKP's tendency was to evolve KOF Style into something simpler (see Shen Woo, Terry 2K3) with simpler shading patterns, but keeping the high contrast and realistic proportions.

I respect your skills and appreciate your effort, but I can't promise or even tell yet anything else but "re-sized sprites will be refined into the higher resolution". Also, one of the main reasons I decided to do this one is because his face looked badass, and I've decided to keep the dark face on all the frames :)

yes, you are right...but no at all :P
for example, look at kim03, then look him on XI and you will notice that details were added...
also Duolon or someone else that I can remember was retouched...

anyways, was just an idea, cause my impresion on KOF sprites is nearly the opposite thing
"realistic sprites, proportions and shades with great detail"

no matter what's your choice, I will keep an eye on this WIP  :sugoi:

Man those are virtually scratch sprites, nice work.  I think the crouching one is evidence that he could use at least another pants shade though (that or rethinking their arrangement).

Drawing that was easy and exciting stuff, but trying to understand the countless problems I ran into (and that I was absolutely incompetent to resolve) made me decide to set it aside. I'll release all the materials I had gathered so maybe someone can finish coding it come to think of it  ::)

I agree on letting the face almost untouched, but i prefer the high-contrast pants/skin
Anyway for now, the key is to focus on the "re-sized sprites will be refined into the higher resolution", then changes can be made easily if walt changes his mind. . . hell, even if you want between3-4 guys adding 1 extra tone as somekind of "color separation" would be no problem. BUT THAT'S THE FUTURE

I'm glad this project is still working :P I like Reiji and I DL-ed the existing version of Reiji years ago, and is pure shit (sprites and gameplay). And I'm very happy about this Reiji...

A question, what kind of sparks/FX/sounds will he has?? pre-2k3, 2k3, XI, CVS2 or maybe default sparks (like IronKOF creations)?

I'll be waiting for this char, make a good job, Güaltt ;)

You just need to download the pack in the link I provided, and code it into your data folder as default. It will work for all your charas that don't have sparks included.

Currently doing other basics like walk, crouch. Like POTS said, it's almost scratchwork and it takes time. I always wanted to change his stuff that looks like he's hunched, I'll post more on my advances after the weekend if there is time for me to work on him.

Now, to be honest, the screenshots posted earlier come from editing the sprites already inside the SFF that are damaged and re-sized incorrectly, I'm redoing the few I already have,

At this point there are 2 truths.

1. The original character has been code-patched by coder already. 100% playable, more accurate to KOF standards. After consulting with the original author he said he would update the chara himself some other time. In that sense you could say it's done, but private. Sprites still look bad.

2. Sprites will be redone, and once the new SFF is completed a new version shall be coded from the ground up, using several Open Source materials, mainly Iron, Vans, etc. Coding is pretty much covered and shouldn't take very long, the hard part still is the sprite editing :P

I'm sorry for the lack of updates so far, but I saw myself forced to take advantage of this year's spriting season and made some progress on some other projects, namely this (http://mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php?topic=100381.0) or this (http://i622.photobucket.com/albums/tt305/cci_walt/stansu01.gif).

Currently doing some planning, will continue updates on the weekend.

awesome face, very simply shaded but looks very cool.
in his stance, his left hand (on arm that's partially covered by his body) position seems uncomfortable, nothing wrong with it but it doesn't fell right, maybe it would look better if the knuckles facing a little bit more to the camera.

and maybe a little bit more contrast on the palette

Everything else looks perfect

Uh ? You mean the mention of Mugen ? It's a Wikia, it's fanmade, they put anything they want. It doesn't make a lot of sense to bring up Mugen creations when talking about the official games, but meh, it's a community fansite, what do you expect, they could put all sorts of crazy stupid theories if they wanted.

How many WIPs are you involved in anyway ?
At the moment I'm in several projects as support including some SprAc Team's WIPs and Vans'. In order of importance, the priority list goes:
- Topless Geese - only 3 sprites left for a Reppuken effect edit (4/7 sprites)
- Luise Meyrink - pending some fixes ASAP (0/10 sprites)
- Blue Demon Ramon - Designs, Concept Art, and GETHITS (5/30 sprites)
- Reiji Oogami - Ripped sprites at perfect axis, must do Project Management and recruit Raposo :P (0/??? sprites in phase 2)
- Another Iori - Beta Stance finished (took like a week) + 30% of sprites made (lost some progress)

At least I can't complain, some stuff (haha all?) may not get completely finished, but I like helping other people to achieve ther goals, which are also VERY interesting WIPs :nice: Plus, it has been a very productive year so far, as compared to 2008 when I sprited practically nothing. So far this year there's a working beta of Reiji thanks to Rolento, and a great stage of KOF EX2 thanks to Madkat ... and that took some effort from my part as well.

Ahahaha no. Those sprites are indeed KOFZ Eric's sprites. Props to him on that, the sprite set is amazing, you guys will see soon enough. Eventually seeing this character in MUGEN is pretty much a dream come true to many of us KOF enthusiats.
