Challenge time! (MFGMutarts CTF)

So, me and the guys at my local hackerspace created a CTF for the computer science freshmen at our university. A CTF (Capture The Flag) is sort of a hacking contest with all kinds of computer related challenges.

This one is aimed at beginners, everyone with more than basic computer knowledge (ie, knows how to use google) should be able to solve a couple of them. Because I know there are people here who are up to a challenge, I thought I'd fork our scoreboard and let you guys compete

Link: http://zeromutarts.de:8085/

The regular scoreboard is at http://zeromutarts.de/, all challenges are the same (except I took out the ones that can only be solved by visiting places around university), be careful not to mix up those urls. If you find problems with any challenges, yell at me. If you talk about challenges here, try not to give any hints at least for a day or two (and if you do, use spoilers!)

Have fun. Stars for 100% completion! maybe ;)

Writeups don't convey the time this shit takes, though. ELF took something like 20 manhours among our team (ie, three people working on it for six hours straight) ;P

anyways if you are interested, find a ctf team in your local area and stop by for an event. all teams are always looking for players. finding people with the required amounts of skill, time and motivation is not easy :P

If nothing else, I really liked how fighting was animated. It felt like they were powerful and fast, not like everything they touched weighed 5 grams.

Maybe there is hope for a proper DBZ movie yet :mugoi:

not really. there are also no official "solutions" traditionally, but writeups from teams who solved the challenges.

we did a couple, which include challenge descriptions and links to the data still available at this point. there's more at ctftime.org. check out Roboparty, ELF and Wannabe (increasing order of difficulty) :)

and yes, noone solved For whom the bell tolls. It required sending marshalled ruby DateTime objects, but those are version dependent and there was other stuff that looked more promising (like the brezn one) so we spent our time elsewhere :P

That it is a dream is explained right away, yes, but it's about the meaning of the dream. There are some political issues in the dream world, and frederic joins the party to help with that stuff, but that's just the "day job" of the party, not the meaningful part.

Beat didn't scale well at all for me. He's a ranged fighter but all you can do is hit X and he'll shoot some target, with less than poor damage output. Unlike Viola, who is also ranged but skill-based. Play her well and she has triple the damage output any other character can manage. Man I remember doing a happy dance after finally getting Viola back into the party after it was split for more than one game session for me. Those guys must have done something right I thought if I am genuinly happy to see a character back (and not even because the others sucked so bad).

We started playing Tales of Xilia, but like any Tales game before, the battle system just doesn't work very well for me and the story wasn't intriguing enough to keep us going. Star Ocean is looking good so far, even if the pacing is very off.

Anyone got more recommendations for JRPGs on PS3?

Eternal Sonata

Ok first off, you run around in this JRPG as Frederic Chopin, beating people up with his conductor stick thingy. Second, it is a great game.

Presentation: Graphics are ok for their age. Voice acting is nothing special, but alright.

Battle system: It's awesome! New mechanics are introduced gradually which worked really well for me and never got boring, the boss battles are genuinly difficult if you don't develop proper blocking and character management skills. I loved that I could skip the grinding parts by just focusing and playing better when it mattered, and when I failed I knew exactly what I could have done better. I also loved how there are something like 12 playable characters to the game, and almost every one of them (except beat he's useless) can work in a party. I played the final boss fight about 15 times until I finally got it, and almost each time I played with vastly different party lineups and different gameplay strategies.

Story: The story was remarkable in a very specific way to me. After the game was over, I was left with a "dafuq just happened?!" impression. I thought about it for a while, and I felt like I had a lot of puzzle pieces that didn't quite fit together. This is rather typical for a JRPG ending, but most of the time that's where it ends. BUT, I read an interpretation online, and it all made sense. The story is a dream, based on the life of a real life classical musician, and somehow they made that shit work! I gotta say I was really impressed with that.

If you like JRPGs and need something to fill the gap between two new releases, give this one a shot!

I'm kinda catching up with PS3 JRPGs right now, right now we're 10 hours into Star Ocean International.

So, we ended up getting 119 out of 222 flags. We got a lot of more rare ones (like Saint Vincent Island) by writing mails to hotels like "we want to book, but we have a rather strict schedule. [link] could you look at it and tell us if you can squeeze us in somewhere?" We actually got an IP from a satellite, but it said "unknown location" and didn't yield a flag :( Here's another one of my "nice tries." :lugoi:

We ended up 3rd in the overall competition (for comparison, we had 3967 points total). We just couldn't crack that last challenge, even after staring at it for 30+ hours. Thanks for all your clicks, it definitely helped getting through those first 80 flags

We employed a variety of other methods involving tor, proxy lists and router default passwords. At this point there aren't that many countries you're likely to know people from left ;P

BUT, feel free! It's one point for every flag that lights up there, and we don't even have half yet. :)

For those wondering wtf I'm doing, me and a couple of guys are participating at the fluxfingers ctf. We're Stratum Auhuur, and (at the time of this writing) we are actually in the lead! I've been staring at gdb and assembler for 14 hours straight now. :sweatdrop:
