If he can't win awards in the future from this competition, then that's kind of bad because if he was finished, he might have gotten a higher score. :(

I kind of want him to be at his full potential before he starts winning awards.

Bump! Updated!

Not quite the turnout I'd promised, but that will be for the Beta. This is the final Alpha.

Thanks a lot for nominating me for contributor status. Back when the site hadn't changed, I was really frustrated because I couldn't use the requests thread to find characters that I could use for inspiration or to get an idea how the code worked.

Now that anybody can use the requests it doesn't matter, but it's nice to think that people would nominate me as a contributor. ^_^

Well I'm amazed that  I managed to get an award with an incomplete ALPHA level character, and my first ever character, too!

Lol, It's actually kind of embarrassing. XD Is it really fair that you score Maxime a silver award when he doesn't even have half a moveset? I thought that these awards were for finished characters only?

And does this mean that he won't be able to win any more awards in the future (when he's actually finished?)

Leave AI out till you think he's done. Someone might code an AI that's perfectly fair now, but will be overpowered when he's finished. It'll also probably need adding to as well. AI is an end of character thing when everything else is done so you can get a balanced AI out of it.

Ah alright. I really just wanted to get the computer to follow some basic combos, not really going into that mindgame stuff that higher-end AIs do. I guess I'll leave it till he's more complete.

Updated! Now with annoying voice and three new moves, plus a general buff in combo ability. See the releases section for the final Alpha.

Changes that have been made with this version:

.Maxime now gains chip special if the opponent blocks his attacks.
.Will of Whisp stuns for a lot longer if it hits
.New attacks added, boost kick, soulgun and Onibi Swell.
.Choppertime has been downpowered slightly
.Mamatus Alto is a tiny bit faster and stuns for longer in the air
.Opponent can't air recover from Quicksilver
.Added a "shove" attack to get out of blockstrings: press a+b+c as soon as opponent's attack connects with Maxime's guard
.Voice added

Now I really need someone to help me code his AI for the Beta version.

NEWS: Now that my tablet is back, I can finally start working on Maxime again.

However, I also want to make time to start on the homemade game I'm working on with a friend, 'Cherub Felines'.

My friend is currently working on a creation interface that works almost exactly like Fighter Factory, so I'll have an easier time making the sprites and animations.

It also means that once Blanc is ready for game, it'll be easy to turn him into a Mugen character.

Cherub Felines will be a fun 2D side-scrolling adventure game in the style of Odin Sphere and RBO, with a Devil-May-Cry style combat and an RPG level-up system set in a world with a surrealist depiction of nature, characters hand-animated in Flash, and a storyline laced with subtle moral and religious values and philosophies on the nature of lenicy and racial prejudice.

All carried out by cute anime-styled cats of course.

@Demitri: You mean you could read that? I'm still translating it.

@Pico EX: The thing is, she's *not* a decent character at all. She's really a very poor character. It should never feel painful to play a character...right? right? It doesn't matter if she can take down some cheezy characters, that doesn't make her "good". I could make a round ball with a 1hit KO hitbox that flashes on the screen every second gametic and takes up the entire screen, and that would undoubtedly beat the cheezy characters without having to even input any buttons.

No, you need to make your characters playable. It's no fun if they can take down the opponent in 3 hits. They're not satisfying to play at all. And as I said before, the moves and animations just aren't good.

Now I know Pico has limited animation frames, but there's a character called Michiru (who was made for Mugen by Rouge Noir) who is a striker from Eternal Fighter Zero. Before I'd heard of that game, I downloaded Michiru for Mugen and I thought she was a complete character because she was so well made. You have to make it convincing that the character can work on their own. At the moment, your Pico just looks awkward.

It's also possible to get away with very minimal animation: Look at Yoma Komatsu. She's animated rather cheaply (plays rather cheaply too, hyeh hyeh) but the minimalist approach doesn't make the character any worse.

I know you don't have much to work with, but I'm sure you can do better than this with a bit of dedication.

You know it might be good for you if you try to make a balanced character one day...

I mean...these characters aren't even fun. There's nothing enjoyable in playing them. Very unoriginal moves, ugly effects, glitch bonanza...At least some of the other cheezy characters have fun animations and attacks.

You know, I have an idea, you should make a glitch character that's so intentionally glitchy that it's somehow cool. It might be possible. >.>

Exactly. And I promise that when he has some more moves and specials, he'll be able to deal decent damage off a good combo.

By his next update, I plan to give him:

.1 more hyper, a physical one.
. Helicopter's missiles will be slightly weaker, making the new special his strongest.
. pressing a+b+c just as you block an attack will cause a "break" move that deals no damage, but hits the opponent and pushes them away a bit.
.Maria as a helper. She runs across the screen and tries to strike with a frying pan. She's hittable.
.Rick as a helper. He stands on the stage for about 2 seconds before making a really fast dash slice with his sword. You can't have him and Maria out at the same time. Hittable.
. Aerial version of the willowhisp projectile.
.strong kick, punch and special moves. (QCF inputs)
.An attack grab (blockable)
.1 more throw
. a strong parry (counter)
. an air dodge
. a running special and kick.
. a power up move (wolf howl)

If anybody, if you're going to make another original character any time soon, I vote for the green capoeira giraffe thing from Dendyn Dynasties because he was badass for the 5 seconds he was on screen.  >:P:

Yes yes, I know you want Niran to be my next project XD. But the thing is, his fighting style is basically capoeira with fire. Now Maxime is already quite martial artsy (although a lot more scrubby) and uses blue fire as his special, so I get the feeling that Niran would just be too similar for me to make. I'd want my next character to be something totally different.

It'll PROBABLY be these guys:

Although I guess that if I did decide to do Niran, I could always make him a tricky stance-related character in the soul calibur style.

Well, he's pretty interesting so far. Yeah, I personally think he could have a bit more oomph to his attacks; at least of the calibre of Rouge Noir's Shiki(preferably without the 'WHAT THE FUCK BERSERKER' mode when Shiki becomes his Nanaya self :P). He is fun to combo with though, not to mention very fluid. This is one to watch, that's certain.

Another problem (which I'm sure will be dealt with further down, as new moves and abilities are added) is the AI. Doesn't really do any mind-gamey stuff, but I'm sure it will.

Well he needs to have even lower damage output than Shiki, because his special guage builds a lot faster.

Also, he doesn't have any AI yet, which is why there are no mindgamy things. It's still very much an alpha.

Starfox Adventures.

"Wait, so you mean after I get to the final battle with Andross, I'm stuck there and won't be able to go and explore anymore? I have to make a new file? @#$@#^$#^!!!"

Not that there was much to explore anyway. That game had next to nothing in terms of replay value.

And also:

Super Mario 64 remake.

And by completing, I mean getting all the stars. The reward is access to the top of the courtyard where you get...wait for it...some 1up mushrooms and 3 hat boxes! Whoo!! What can you do with this, I wonder? NOTHING, you've beat the game! At least in the original Mario 64 you got a super jump or so I hear.

Yeah, I kind of realise it's silly to change so much for Maxime vs. Dragon Claw. I think a custom intro and lose pose should be good enough.

Thanks a lot for that compliment! I've always been a huge fan of tricky technical characters (In Smash Bros Melee, my main is Ness) and I think they're a lot more satisfying to play as than characters that are very simple to pick up and use. I want Maxime to be like Ness in a way: not the most powerful thing for sure, but has a trick for almost any situation to make him effective in the right hands.

Unfortunately, I'm waiting for my tablet to be sent back to me from Perth, so I can't make any more sprites right now. And I'll be getting a job and stuff soon, so production on Maxime will slow down a little.

*off topic ramblings*
Although...I can't help but think that if I every decide to make a non-original character for Mugen, I'd probably make Azuma Kazuma from 'Yakitate!! Japan' because that show is just awesome. XD Either him or Phoenix Wright.

In general, you need to be able to not only point out a character's problems, but also give advice on how to fix them. Make sure that you also take some time to encourage the creator on the good points of the character as well. Don't be crass or harsh: if the creator is going through a learning process, then share some of your knowledge rather than getting angry.

And of course, no "neat, I like it." This is like firing a blank at the creator, who was expecting real feedback for their character.

Sorry to double post, but...

Since the creator of Dragon Claw, Reu, has died, I've decided that I'm going to give Maxime special intro and win/lose animations against Dragon Claw when he's finished.

I drew inspiration from Dragon Claw for Maxime, and for this reason I want him to be able to show his respects for the creator of the character that helped inspire his existance.

On top of this, the final version of Maxime will never be able to win against Dragon Claw, I'll make sure of that. People can remove the code if they really want to fight Dragon Claw with Maxime, but officially he will be rigged to lose.

EDIT: After reconsidering it, I realise this is kind of silly, so I think I'll just settle for a custom intro and lose/win state.
