GTA banned from Target and Kmart in Australia and now this. Yeah, you should be worried at this point.
I was mostly talking about a pattern of Steam doing it, but yeah that Australia ban is concerning. At least things are better than they were 10 years ago, at least (what with games now being allowed to have 18+ ratings).

postal was literally the poster child for "violent games harm people"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_2#Controversy
I remember Postal, I don't remember it ever being banned or anything (although it apparently was, in New Zealand? huh), but yeah, this seems like a bigger deal. GTA strikes me as a much better comparison, but of course that series has obviously attracted a lot more attention.

MFW Marvel actually did Star Wars Comics. Definitely something new for me
It was one of the earliest licensed Star Wars products, perhaps even the first one? I dunno, don't quote me on that because I'm not doing any goddamn research on it.

I do remember that Marvel was really reluctant to accept the job, and didn't think it would go anywhere. It ended up (probably) saving them from a financial collapse a few years later!

Marvel is putting out new editions of its original Star Wars comics, all completely recolored, and boy oh boy does it seem like the poster child for the absolute worst case scenario for a badly done modern recoloring:

I mean jesus look at that first panel

It really does seem like they don't really have any clue on what Star Trek stands for, or how to make a movie out of it. They just have been aping other, more popular movies (Star Wars for the 1, The Dark Knight for 2) and grafting them haphazardly onto a Star Trek framework. At least it mostly worked with 1, but jeez, this doesn't inspire me with any confidence.

I guess at the very least there won't be any crypto-9/11-truther messages barely hidden in the movie!

well you know what, scratch all that enthusiasm for Star Trek 3, because the rumor about Orci's departure is that he was basically forced out by Paramount over creative differences. What creative differences, one might ask? Well, Paramount thinks Star Trek should be more like... Guardians of the Galaxy.

jesus tittyfucking christ :wall:

Holy smokes! Archie is getting a reboot/relaunch, courtesy of Mark Waid (!) and Fiona Staples (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). They will apparently be giving Riverdale a "new look and an edgier tone", which sounds potentially terrible, but... Mark Waid and Fiona Staples, man. That creative team sounds amazing, and Waid isn't the type to do a souless, shitty grim n' gritty reboot. They know what they're doing!

Here is the rumored Star Trek 3 director shortlist:
Rupert Wyatt (Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes)
Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game, ewwwwwww)
Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Easy Money)
Justin Lin (the Fast And Furious franchise)
Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code, the Warcraft movie)

no Edgar Wright, unfortunately, but these all sound like mostly promising names. It's the writing that I'm worried about.

The controversy on this one seems like it's bigger than anything Postal has done.

People aren't defending the game because it's good or because it represents them, but because a move like this encourages stuff like that to happen more often whenever a controversial game comes out, it doesn't even need to be a violent game.
I dunno it's just so cartoonishly "90's politician's worst fear about violent videogames", so engineered to court controversy that it doesn't seem like it would set a lot of precedent, IMO. If there starts to be a pattern I would be worried, but I just can't get very worked up about it.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuh, they removed a game that got in the top 10 in two hours for totally vague reasons. How does that make them neutral at all?
Among the options they had, it was probably seen as the one likely to court the least amount of controversy for them. Valve doesn't want to touch this with a ten foot pole, most likely.

I (technically Lith did it but whatever) just split off a dumn derail. Do not respond to it here, only discuss this character. All further off topic replies will be deleted. And that goes double for you, osbtm1, if you go off topic one more time in this topic you'll get a 3 day ban.

Valve is a private business and has no obligation to put every game on Steam, and they have the right to refuse games from their service. There's no big conspiracy here.

I would recommend splitting or deleting the derail stuff (I guess everything after Alex's post, more or less) and stating that any further derailment will earn him a 3 day ban.

I think I actually would've been a lot more into it if it was RE4 2.0!

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
this is really fun! I don't have a lot to say about it. Uh I guess I would've preferred more of the unique ghost minibosses, like the original had in spades, and maybe E. Gadd could've called a bit less, but other than that, it's a fun sequel to an oft-overlooked game.

previously in the MCU thread
Marvel wanting to boot out Andrew Garfield was apparently the point of contention with the Sony execs, and may have led to them backing out of a deal to share the Spider-Man movie rights.

And speaking of Sony execs not wanting to recast Andrew Garfield...
Sony might be looking to boot out Andrew Garfield, in part because of some critical remarks he made about Sony after the disastrous reception Amazing Spider-Man 2 got.

Or maybe they'll just reboot everything, because "diminishing returns" is not something that exists, right? One of the ideas for a Spidey reboot would be having an older, adult Peter Parker (possibly married too?), and perhaps trying to tackle the seminal "Kraven's Last Hunt" storyline. Which is... an odd choice, picking the story where Kraven, despondent over his repeated failed attempts to kill Spider-Man, gives it one last desperate try, culminating in his suicide. Kinda weird to do that if no one knows who the fuck Kraven the Hunter is or has no attachment to him?
