This is only for the CPS1 SF2s (WW, CE, and HF). CPS2 has no hardware dipswitches, so I don't know how to get to this menu in SSF2 or SSF2T, if it's even possible.

Thanks to the data at T. Akiba's page, I've been playing around with the Object Test mode in the CPS1 SF2s, and figured I'd share what I've found out so far.

This menu was originally accessed on the real hardware by using dipswitch settings. With switch A-8 OFF and switch C-8 ON, starting up the machine while holding down P1's Medium Punch and P2's Light and Hard Punches would access the menu. However, emulator's dipswitch settings are kind of awkward to use, and even though certain dispswitch settings allow all hitboxes to be displayed at once, they have side effects such as forced high-speed mode that make it difficult to navigate the menus precisely. So the better alternative is to access the menu via emulator's cheat functions. Thanks to Kung Fu Man for providing this method.

For Final Burn Alpha:

cheat "Test Menus"
default 0
0 "Disabled"
1 "Scroll Test", 0, 0xFF08CE, 0xA4
2 "Obj Test", 0, 0xFF08CE, 0xB3

For Kawaks:

Name=Test Menus
0=Disabled
1=Scroll Test, FF08CF, A4
2=Obj Test, FF08CF, B3
Default=0

You'll want to select "Obj Test" on this cheat, then press the emulator's test/service button. Next switch to "EDIT" mode. This will allow us to target individual hitboxes and easily navigate through animations. To do this, press P2 Start. Near the top center of the screen, right under the "OBJ TEST" text, The "A" Cursor should move from "NORMAL" to "EDIT".

P1 Up and Down will go from one animation to another. P1 Hard Kick will advance to the next animation frame ("animelem" in Mugen terminology) of the current animation.

See the text in the upper right that says "CHAR CTR: XXXXH"? That's the amount of ticks for the current animelem (in hexadecimal, or course). Holding down P1 Light Punch will let you play the animation in real time by counting the CHAR CTR value down. To reset the current animation to its beginning, press P1 Medium Punch.

What about hitboxes? See the little green cursor on the left side of the screen? P2 Light Kick will let you use that to select HEAD, BODY, FOOT (those are CLSN2), WEAK (no freaking clue), ATCK (CLSN 1), and BODY1 (the "push" box, analogous to Mugen's "width" and "height" values). With one of these selected, press P2 Hard Kick to have the current selection highlighted on the sprite. If nothing but the axis marker seems to be highlighted, that means the current frame lacks this type of box. The highlight blinks, so you'll probably want to pause and frame advance to get a good screenshot. Use the shot factory if text gets in the way or some of the markers are hard to see against the sprite. Also keep in mind that the display does not update until you press P2 Hard Kick again regardless of whether you've moved to another frame or animation.

To change characters, hold down P1 Hard Punch, and use P1 Up and Down.

That's about all for now. Hope someone finds this useful.  ;D

I... I had this dream once... that I went to EAAARRRTH, and I was walking around, on the street and I came up this policeman.. who was just, you know, standing there at the corner, and he said "What are you doing?" And I said "I THINK I'M LOST!"... So he said "Well, wh.. where d-, where do you live?" And I said "I LIVE UP THERE!" and pointed up to the sky, and the policeman just kinda took his hat off and scratched his head... Then he said "You're an alien, aren't you?", and I said "I DON'T KNOW, I GUESS!"

And then I woke up.

I don't get all the people asking for "improvements". What can be done to "improve" the gameplay while still keeping it SF2? Most of the ideas for "improvement" I hear are basically "make it into SF3 or Alpha".

Messatsu, why would Hyper Fighting's code be more modern that Super Turbo's? HF = '93, CPS1; ST = '94, CPS2.

Can you believe there doesn't appear to be a SINGLE MIDI file of that song anywhere on the internet? I'm taking it upon myself to make one now. :sugoi:

Modules really wouldn't be that different from the original music format in the first place, and they could theoretically use higher quality versions of the original samples (providing they could be found) without taking up a whole lot of space.

I don't see the point of midi, because AFAIK the PS3 and Xbox 360 don't have on-board wavetables, so in order to make a MIDI even function, they'd have to provide their own samples with it. And if they're gonna do that, why not go with modules?
