Hello everyone,

Ruby has been voted to be my next character, and now she is complete.

Yang has also received an update:

- Fixed a bug that caused jB's animation to loop
- Fixed a bug that sometimes puts the opponent in the wrong state after the first hit of Yellow Dragon
- Fixed a bug that prevented Yang from using either of her running attacks if the player is holding down
- 2C can now be used while running
- Timer now freezes during yellow dragon
- Too Hot to Handle now puts the opponent in a custom state, allowing for it to be comboed off of more consistently
- Adjusted the air velocity on 5AAAA
- Adjusted the pause time from auto guarding
- Included an alternate small port, courtesy of CozySquirtle
- Included extra palettes courtesy of BBSenpai

Hitspark thing( that's about to be solved) from earlier aside Ruby's a pretty neat character.
Edit: it worked so double thanks
Double edit: I find it odd that when cancelling the second to last hit of buzzsaw blast (the hit where she pins them to the ground with the scythe before blasting away) causes the opponent to slide away from her for a bit.

I find it odd that when cancelling the second to last hit of buzzsaw blast (the hit where she pins them to the ground with the scythe before blasting away) causes the opponent to slide away from her for a bit.

This is where the stagger animation from guilty gear, mortal kombat, skullgirls, etc. comes in. If the opponent has either anim 5180 or 5003, then the opponent will stagger after getting hit from that attack, otherwise it defaults to the dizzy animation.

I would show a screenshot, but imgur is still having problems right now.

In Cross Tag, the attack simply knocks the opponent away, but I wanted to try taking a different approach.

If the opponent has either anim 5180 or 5003, then the opponent will stagger after getting hit from that attack, otherwise it defaults to the dizzy animation.

I personally use 5012 (stand/air hit low (hard)) instead of the dizzy anim if an opponent lacks the stagger anim, I think sliding with 5012 looks more natural than sliding with the dizzy anim.

I just tried this out for myself, and it really does look better. Plus, there's also some characters with dizzy animations that leave them crouching. So yeah, this is another thing to have in the next update.

Here's a japanese voice patch for anyone interested.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to do this. Since it's good to have options, I might as well have this included in her folder for the next update, if you don't mind.

Just out of curiosity, do you plan on giving your characters AI in the near future, by chance? I'm not saying that they can't fight, but some people like that little extra challenge, if you know what I mean.

I actually don't know how to code ai. I don't see it as a major priority, but one of these days, I will figure it out.

You could get someone to do a patch for them.  Maybe Holn could do it, considering he's done AI for many BB characters in the past.

After testing them extensively, here's my feedback on both of them:

Ruby:
-By any chance, did you use SSB sound fx for some of her attacks? I feel like would have been better if you have use her rifle sounds from the show (Same with Yang's gauntlets).
-The hit where Ruby uses Crescent Rose to hit the ground during Buzzsaw Blast looks off with a dizzy animation.

Yang:
-Yang's uppercut is missing the sound fx where she lands on the ground.
-The fightfx hitspark on Yang's crouching LK is sightly misaligned.

Both:
-Since you added hit sounds, I kinda wish you put custom hitsparks to go along with them.
-The damage feels on the high side and can do almost half of the opponent's health if their on the corner.
-I feel like you should put envshake on Ruby and Yang's supers to add a little more oomph to their attacks.
-There's no running sound when they run (Since you are using Guilty Gear sound fx, I remember being sounds for that).

Thanks for the release. Since you did well with these characters, I'm surprised you aren't contributor yet. I decided to put you as one of them on the Contributor Suggestion Thread.

For his older patches, maybe.  The one he did for MvC3 Alice, you can manually control her just fine; it's only when her AI is turned on either via debug or training mode that you completely lose control of her.

-Yeah, I always found the sound effects from smash 64 to be really satisfying. Although I can give the gunshot sounds from Grimm Eclipse a try.

-Eh, I didn't think it was completely necessary. The player could always swap out the fightfx if they wanted to. I added custom hit sounds because one of Yang's win poses uses a hit sound, it sounded weird with the default. And in Ruby's case, there were no default sounds for slashes.
-The damage output was actually pretty high in cross tag. In fact, I feel like the damage output is lower here.
-I'll give that a try
-This shall be fixed

This is really neat. In fact, its so neat that I have included it in the update that I have just now released.

Both Characters:

I have very limited knowledge on how to code AI, So I would have to ask someone to make AI patches, starting with Holn.

4) Open a the palette that you want in this slot (Open palette from a file...).  [Top left button.]

6) Repeat until finished.  Save SFF.  Now you're done.

Disregarding my hatred for RWBY franchise, I must say this Ruby is far more solid of a character than I was originally expecting. My only qualm is that Ruby feels like it promotoes mashing. Ganted, I haven't played BBTAG, so I can't tell if that's close to source, but otherwise, I feel there's a good understanding of FG's shown on this Ruby. Hmm... do you have any consideration to work on the Persona side of characters at all this? The way they play wouldn't be out of place in the way you coded them.

do you have any consideration to work on the Persona side of characters at all this? The way they play wouldn't be out of place in the way you coded them.

I don't plan on tackling any of the Persona characters just yet. But, if I were to do so, I would most likely work on either Mitsuru or Naoto.

i main ruby and yang in BBTAG so im very impressed with how well you translated some of the mechanics to a single player enviroment, they feel a bit looser though but that's actually a good thing for me, allows for more creativity!

i'd love to see your take on the other franchise characters as well

i might adapt this to another gameplay style myself, it's very versatile. good work.

As someone who plays as both of those characters, I would love you to do that. Even more if they were more accurate to Ultimax.
Adachi did nothing wrong. Still haven't beaten Cave Story's Hell. The Nutshack is a cute anime. Goanimate is my fav animu.

It's actually good to know this is something that happens in BBTAG. Hopefully we can see a Mitsuru. She deserves it. She needs it. ;_; Even though I'd also love to see Yukiko playing the way you designed Ruby and Yang. Like said, I don't like RWBY, but I will keep watching an eye on your work. I like what you're doing.

- When I was aligning those sprites, I anchored everything to Yang's (viewer's) left foot of her standing sprite. Turns out that in this case, it would've been better to anchor to the right foot. Anyway, this shall be fixed.
- I'll mess around with the hit sparks, but what exactly do you mean by the ground fx acts weird? Is it misaligned or something?
- In Guilty Gear, that effect did have an out transition that followed Sol's sword, it didn't exactly fit with Yang's animation, so I left it out. Although, I could make my own out transition by messing around with the transparency.
- She actually does emit flames during semblance mode. I did add a ground pound effect from the fightfx, but it seems that I'll have to make it bigger. I could also try adding an envshake value to see if that helps.

EDIT: I think I might know what you mean by the weird ground fx now. Does the animation loop or stop abruptly? If that's the case, then I just have to get rid of the removetime value.

EDIT: I think I might know what you mean by the weird ground fx now. Does the animation loop or stop abruptly? If that's the case, then I just have to get rid of the removetime value.
-Since you noticed, the ground fx stop abruptly and the animation doesn't finish completely like the first two hitsparks on the grab.
-Oh yeah there is one, but there is no sound fx for the impact and it also stops abruptly. As for in the semblance mode, I think it's needs a little more oomph to it and there is no ground fx at all.

Alright, first on the agenda is that Yang got an update:

Who is Mika?

Mika is from Under Night In-Birth, and is also one of the more recent DLC characters for Blazblue Cross Tag Battle.

First of all, i LOVE you for making them in Mugen.

But if i may make one recommendation, it's to increase the aerial distance for Cold Shoulder for Yang. In CTB it's an aerial combo opener, but in your Yang, you cannot do any kind of combo after Cold Shoulder as the aerial distance is basically non-existant and the animation lock prevents you from comboing into it.

AI patch are pretty good, not easy but not overwhelming hard by default.

More like, feels like playing with a casual human??? Even does some funny back forward steps like trying to fool ya.

Ruby with the AI patch can even win a few rounds against muteki's Sol Badguy at AI level 11, although Sol still wins way more.

I think there's a bug, though.  I might've imagined it, but I think her AI sometimes does Petal Dance despite not having enough super meter for it.

Just wanted to point out that with both yang and ruby their forward walking animation is the same as their backward walking animation. Not sure if this was intentional or if you have not updated it yet? Other than that I am loving them so far and hope to see more from them (like say the custom music during their finishing moves)

It's because Cross-tag has no forward walk only forward run. So they didn't get forward walk animations.

She becomes fully vulnerable after the red hitbox disappears. I made it this way to make up for the fact that the move is very unsafe on block.

However, if you think she shouldn't be invulnerable during that move, then go into yang's folder, open up yang.cns with the text editor of your choice and scroll down until you find this:
I strongly advice against doing this. The move already has a (questionable) large hitbox as is and making her invincible during it is overkill even if the move is unsafe on block. It means I can't even punish her with a DP or invincible super early.

 Personally, I don't think Yang's Semblance should literally turn off her damage scaling even if it's just a temporary thing. Boosted damage would be a more sound way to go and that's actually pretty easy to do. Just have a targetlifeadd in statedef -3 that subtracts a % of life based on damage already delivered that only occurs whenever Semblance is on.

One, I only did that to express the utter ludicrousness of the invul on that overhead.

Two, overheads shouldn't have that kind of invul slapped onto it in the first place. It should be at least possible to poke her out of it before it even starts, and since she's airborne, it's a free combo for characters using newer-gen mechanics.

I recommend either raising the amount of time before a character gains control after an airdash to tighten the timing or raising the minimum height for airdashes, since the low altitude airdash is what made this even possible in the first place.

It seems like you didn't adjust Ruby's intro with Ragna. She still stops moving before her sound clip finishes. Although, I looked at her "All Unique Interactions and Win Quotes" video on YouTube again and it seems like she gets pushed away before she finishes talking, so I can see why you left it as is. But the way you animated the intro looks weird and made Ruby look static until she got kicked. That's why I mentioned it during Ragna's feedback. Unless it's intentional and you do decided to leave it unchanged, then the only thing that's left is the missing effects.

Also, is Ruby and Yang supposed to have infinite juggling? Because I realized I can pin an opponent to the wall and keep juggling them endlessly. Even though the damage gets lower, I can get over 100 hits and even more as long as I can keep up with the combo and not let them touch the ground. Probably Mika and Ragna can as well, but how their movesets work they can't juggle opponents as easily like those two.

Not exactly. If you try juggling Stupa's Training character with auto recovery turned on, then he'll air recover before you can get any further.
I have noticed that the AI for certain characters will make no attempt to air recover whatsoever, allowing for the infinite juggles, which is really weird.

 That might just be the case that some characters lack aerial recovery altogether, making it impossible for them to escape as long as the attacker continues connecting juggles successfully or eventually expire their juggles depending on what juggle system one uses.

Atleast one of the small group of decent characters to come from RWBY got a MUGEN character, shame it had to be from BBCTB though. Looks good so far.

 Sorry to bump the thread, but it's fairly important in context.

 Found two infinites with Ruby, although the second one is probably just a semi-infinite with strict timing due to MUGEN's default juggle points, but still worth looking into.

It would probably be a good time to start adopting an incremental cornerpush + hitstun decay mechanic to make stamping out unintended infinite combos easier since lowering hittime too much can make certain non-infinite combos impossible in the long run. Although the incremental cornerpush already exists in my stuff, hitstun decay is going to be a new mechanic I'll be introducing in my coming updates upon Nayuki's release, so, it's worth looking into those.

Since Nep bumped the topic regarding Infinites and Ruby has yet to be updated with these two issues on my feedback regarding slash sounds:
Ruby:
-Her crouching B should be a medium slash sound.
-On Ruby's Petal Burst, I can barely hear the heavy slash sound of the last hit (I suggest you change all the slash sound hits of the pedals to light ones as the medium slash sounds override the volume of the heavy slash sound).
I found a bug and a few aesthetic issues:
-The 2nd hit of her A command normals causes Ruby to suddenly scoot a couple of pixels forward.
-The A version of ground Gun Blast doesn't a sliding effect.
-There is no landing effect when Ruby touches the ground during Guillotine.

Hopefully these can be fixed too.

I noticed a palette problem during Yang's semblance, it changes the users color to a different one.

I tested this myself against Training, but it seems like you are not using the B command normals fast enough. The last hit of the B command normals should have enough stun time for the combo to still hit. I've been holding back the whole time with Training and was unable to block mid combo just by pressing B very quickly. If you wait half a second before pressing B on the last command normal, then he'll block. Not sure if it's too short of a time or if the AI of those characters react much quicker, so correct me if I'm wrong.

To OHMSBY, if you do plan to update Ruby again to fix this, here's two minor aesthetics I forgot to mention a while back:
-There's no ground shockwave during Sy-Pod Shot (I realized Ruby slams Crescent Rose to the ground in order to shoot).
-There is no slide effect during Pedal Burst (I noticed when Ruby is sliding on the ground, there isn't one).

It might have something to do with this as Thent stated about this problem before with characters using Pots template:

No it's not, it's just personal aesthetics to make the character look better. Knowing me, I just like doing that for non-source accurate characters.

I have also tested the combo in training mode by holding back the whole time after the first hit and it works just fine. That is why it is so confusing when it doesn't work against so many of these characters I fight when I do the combo as fast as humanly possible. She is one of my mains in crosstag and that combo I am trying to do is one of her basic BnB's. And after even further testing in training mode against that exact same character, and having that combo work just fine every time I can safely say its these other authors being really sloppy that are the issue here.

 AFAIK, many of RicePigeon's characters and pretty much all my characters as within the last few months also apply the PotS tick fix, so, you may have to test that Ruby combo on them to see if the same thing happens too. If it does, that might just mean Ruby may require a hitstun buff in all her moves then. If it doesn't, that may just be the AI being broken on those characters you'be tested it on (which I wouldn't put passed them given the history of those authors).

Some very nice updates and QOL changes for Ruby. From what I have tested everything works as it is supposed to now.

Ruby can still burst during some hypers (this seems to be a case with Helper-type Hypers). You might want to take a look on Nep's Burst code again as his Burst system has another Helper to detect enemy's helper's hitdef attr. This also applies to every works of yours.

Also, while we are at it, I suggest you replace the white scythe flash with Red one (similar to how Gordeau using purple flash for his attacks). It would look a lot better that way.

Also, thanks to Nep Heart, Ruby can now Bypass fall.defence_up, which means that combos will no longer deal half the damage that they should just because the opponent touched the ground.

Ruby Has been updated with that and has received fixes based on Giang's feedback, go ahead and download her again.
