Hi everyone. This is my first post in this forum. I just wanted to see if any of you could help me with a problem I'm having with winmugen.

Well the thing is that whenever I get killed, if I continue, an error that says "can't open stage" takes place.

This is a specially annoying problem as I am doing a mugen with its own storyline, but if you get killed you have to start over, and it is pretty easy to get killed with characters such as Evil_ken or Maximov.

Thanks for your help

Welcome to the Mugen Fighters Guild!

First of all, could you tell us the error that came with it word by word? It seems the problem is more with a specific stage.

This is an old problem with the random stage you may have put for characters.

The new mugen hacks should solve the problem.
Or, you could simply assign a stage to each character you fight in arcade mode.

Well, the error says exactly:

Error message: Can't open stage

About the random stage thing, I don´t know. Cause the stage is loaded the first time I fight, but if I die and continue, 100% of times the error takes place. Although, it IS true that it doesn't happen with characters that have a stage assigned.

Where do I get those hacks you are talking about?

Then it's definitely the problem I'm talking about.

I believe this last hack by rouhei fixes the problem. Though I'm not sure anymore, since I'm now used to assigning a stage to each character.

There are also high-res hack to have high-res stages and/or high-res select screens. Go to randomselect to get them.

Well, I already tried the patch, but the same happens.

Any other idea?. I'd like to keep the random stages for the characters if possible

What stages do you have in your game?

I don't think the problem is with an specific stage, as it happens no matter what stage you are in, and I don't think that all my stages are broken. The thing is that it DOES load them, but if I get killed and continue the error takes place.

Anyway, I'll post my stages as soon as I get home

You might have to look into the Data folder and look up the Fight.def.I think I saw something in there about game over.

I changed the fight.def for one of a mugen that doesn't have the same problem, and it still remains, so I don´t think that the problem is there either.

No, as said, the problem comes from mugen itself.

There was a workaround with naming a stage random and putting it in the main mugen folder, but I can't remember it anymore.

So either you don't lose anymore, either you assign a stage to each opponent. :P

Have you went into the game over Def File to see what's up?

I don't want to download it again because I have edited part of the screenpack.

I know I could pass it to other MUGEN, but 1)is a pain in the ass, and I already have enough work with my current kind of project; and 2)if I have learnt something while using mugen all these years is that, if an error shows up, it will show up again, and again until you solve it.

I didn't look in the game_over.def though, Animugen, I thought you told me to look in the fight.def. I'll try that next. If it doesn't work I guess I'll have to temporaly give up and pass all my data to other MUGEN.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys

The problem doesn't seem to be in the gameover.def either. I have compared it with the one of a MUGEN that works and they are identical.

I guess I'll have to configure a new MUGEN from the very beginning again.

The continue problem comes from the exe file itself, so you would only have to copy your new downloaded winmugen.exe to your old mugen folder and see if it works better or not.

If it's not in the Exe file itself. You might have to go into the data folder and replace the gameover.sff file. There could be something wrong with it.

If this Dong thing is a character, then make sure in the select.def, where the character section, it isn't like "Dong/dong.def" It should just be "Dong"

If it's a stage, it should be fine. Just...not supposed to be in the chars folder =/
