While playing with Seanalty's Solid Snake (a personal favorite) I, for whatever reason, made a connection between Snake and Gordon Freeman.
Snake uses a pistol, grenades, a smg, and a rocket launcher. What weapons did Freeman use?
Genome = Combine soldiers
They even wear 'similar' outfits.
There has since the release of Half Life 2 been much talk of a Gordon Freeman, and who would serve as a base.
So I decided to try a little sprite editting.

This is what I came up with:



It is clearly an editted standing sprite from Seanalty's Snake.
Any comments?

It looks pretty bad.

The face needs ALOT of work.
The armour doesn't look like armour.

His stance is also strange for Gordon..

Well, the face is just snake's + a goatee and eyebrows.
And it is a sprite edit so the stance is just snake's.


It would be more helpful to say where the face needs work,.
What needs to be improved on the armor? (What does it look like now?)
What stance would/should Gordon be in?

you'll change the color of the face to the same color as the legs, right  o_O

oh wait that's part of the outfit.

well I kinda like the face, just work on getting the headband out of the hair and it'll be okay :)

Okay..

-Glasses need work, it looks as if he has a robin-ish mask.
-Beard needs fixing.
-Gordon's hair is wrong, it looks like abit of snake's headband is still there..
-The lower armour doesn't look solid(or w/e).
-The dark shading on his legs, should be the same as the chest armour.

Why the hell would he stand like that?


Changing the stance would require me to use a different base sprite, which is probably not going to happen.
Besides, being a FPS, why would he have such a stiff/straight stance? He would usually have a gun pointed at something.

I did notice the hair, so I'll try to fix it.
Not really sure what to do to the glasses, not seeing the 'robin' mask, but I'll see what I can do.
Not much experience with beards, I'll try to fix it.
I can't darken the upper body, or the arms become invisible, so I guess I'll have to lighten the bottom.
Not sure what you mean by solid, but I'll try darker outlines on the armor.

horrendous. Seanalty's chars appearance are disney for me: Epic fail. Never liked even his idea of snake, seemed very gay for me.


Be aware this is just one more opinion and not an imposition on how you should make your char; if you don´t like it, ignore it, that´s the point of this thing.

dont use any seanaltly char as a base, that´s what i can suggest you.

Thank you all for such wonderfully helpful advice.   :D
It's not like I'm releasing the thing, I was just toying around with a one frame sprite edit. Damn.
I know good and well it looks like a sprite edit of Seanalty's Snake, because it is.
I'm nowhere near done, if you feel it should be improved, you should probably say how, otherwise you're not helping.

At least 9999 had the courtesy to give some actual feedback.





Lightened the bottom half, darkened the leg armor, got rid of the headband, messed with the beard (looks the same), messed with the glasses.
For better or worse.

Finally realized what was wrong with the beard; it wasn't a goatee.

i don´t know how to help u, u seem attached to seanaltly sprite edit, im not.... , i know what my opinion is, so that´s what i put here. this is feedback, u call feedback to wahtever fits your mind. that´s false.

Just try to make a gordon freeman, not a snake edit of seanaltly sprite. Use your imagination, your brain, whatever, i don´t know more to suggest you haha.

if you like seanaltly idea as a base, that´s all, another char i will not use. but, who cares?, this is a free universe, not a free world.

I wasn't really complaining about your post.
You don't like Seanalty's style. I get it.
That's an opinion, it's fine.
Your opinion has been noted.

Just popping in and saying something like, "That looks bad, haha" or "that sucks" on the other hand is not helpful.
As well as rude.
Moving on.


Just try to make a gordon freeman, not a snake edit of seanaltly sprite. Use your imagination, your brain, whatever, i don´t know more to suggest you haha.

Because he's not a fighter, and doesn't know even the basics of fist-fighting?(Now GUN-fighting, on the other hand...)

You've got to remember that despite all the crap he's been through, he's just a man(with a super-suit), which is part of why we like him.  His stance, such as it would be, should show that.  He might be hardened, but he's not a fist man.

You're better off looking for a base that stands and moves...more like a non-fighter would.  If that means looking over things like walk-along beat-em-ups, so be it.

The balance of the sprite is off.  In that sort of a stance his right(artist's left) arm should be more to the left. Cammy or Jill's stance in MVC2 might be good references.  You also need some heavier contrast on the oranges and the darkest shade of orange should be more of a dark brown color.  And because I can, I'm going to suggest adding in some light aliasing on his upper body.  It looks like it has unfinished shading.

I have never seen someone fire a weapon standing straight, with one arm to their side.
I know that Gordon Freeman isn't a fist fighter.

But, what type of a Scientist beats people to death with a crowbar on a regular basis?
And this is a fighting game, it would be a tad awkward for him to walk up and casually talk to whoever he's fighting.


Furthermore, I tend to stay away from beat-em-up sprites, and really don't like how they turn out on Mugen.
Something always feels 'off', and being able to turn your back to the opponent bothers me.
The sprites also seem 'old' in many cases. Plus looking through a multitude of beatemup sprites for a suitable base, would probably kill me.


Snake was chosen on the simple premise that I could easily convert his outfit, his face could be worked with, and he had access to Halflife style weapons.
Nothing else was taken into consideration. Nothing.

I can see if I had maybe posted a whole animation, people could critique it's validity.
Like if I had done a walking animation with him skipping around like Snake.
But a single frame? "Gordon would never stand like that."

Fair enough.
If I ever decide to make a Gordon Freeman character, I will make sure that in his standing and walking animations that he has his arms straight down, as not to offend.
But in my very honest opinion, I think alot of Snake's other animations would work.
So, I personally, would stick with the Snake base.

So if you would prefer a different base be used or likewise have some other "Half-Life" issue with this sprite, feel free to try it yourself.

Seeing as I am not actually working on the character, it's open.
Who knows, I may actually like yours better.

Blame Seanalty.
All of those issues(other than the orange one) pertain to the actual base sprite.

Nonetheless, I'll see what I can do.
