I was bored out of my mind and so I started playing around with one of my screenpacks and ended up with this.



It's not final as I have way too many things to do to it first starting with each character's font portraits (yah, they're custom as you can see) and that scrolling background I stole straight from KOFE(don't worry I'm going to change it with something I think looks better). The goal of this screenpack is to look like a KOF full game of sorts. No it isn't a leecher's screenpack but I might make a normal version if I can.

I might release this sometime soon. I haven't made anything in a long while anyway so it's nice to give something back to the community again.

Fonts aren't just limited to characters since they are actually just pictures assigned to letters/numbers/symbols.

Actually the portraits were ripped straight out of their games and weren't resized. So it's more on the quality of the portraits instead of the resolution.

Hmm, maybe I shouldn't use those KOF2k portraits for the names.

one portrait has a better resolution than the other. it doesn't look good. and now that i think about it having two portraits for a character in the same screen is kinda overkill
Yah, now that you mention it, they're way too big. I managed to make them much smaller but I still can't get over the fact that you can't change the spacing between the names when selecting characters in team play.



There goes my idea. Maybe some Mugen clone will give that feature in the future. For now I'm stuck with fonts. Ugh...

I've put on hold working on the screenpack to work on the lifebars and I'm liking how it's turning out.



Ignore the powerbar fonts, combo counter and win icons. I'm still working on those. As you can see it's heavily based on the KOF2K1 lifebars. It is my favorite in the series so it's the one I picked.

Btw, is 9000,15 already used by some other screenpack's lifebars? I'm currently using it for mine.

Agreed.

I'd also prefer seeing real transparency than the false one used in old games, but it's up to you, these are your lifebars.
Also, try to make them look a little more high-res please. :)

Well, on the powerbars, there's a part in diagonal which we can clearly see is low-res. You can easily work on that.
Afterwards, all the lines which were previously one pixel large (and are now 2 pixel large due to being in HR) could be turned into 1 pixel large again or have a gradient applied on them. For example, the white border surrounding the powerbars could be one pixel large.

Why would you want the portraits over the lifebars...?

That'd be blocking like a couple pixels of the life.

I'm keeping the lifebar background non-transparent so it'll cover the parts below it. Also, I went cheap on that powerbar there. That diagonal line was getting on my nerves. :P

Updates!

Select screen
- change small portrait to 30x30 to give more space and slots
- changed the cell cursors, the old ones were a bitch to resize
- rearranged everything, the big portraits now appear on the left (ala KOF2K2)
- picture names removed, now uses regular fonts :(
- background still not final, just had to put something in there to temporarily fill the void



Versus Screen
- unsure if final, still needs a couple of tweakings



Lifebars
- added names
- small portraits now don't overlap(or is that underlap?) the lifebars
- still need to work on the combo counter and powerbar fonts...and round anim, KO anim and win icons, blargh!

It's up to you of course, why wouldn't it? ??? But I will provide fight and big portraits for all the KOF characters I can think of and some others(for the lazy people:P).

Making the portraits are easy. The big portraits are still 120x140 so you don't even need to change them. For the small portraits, it's up to you. If you want to follow how I made them it's as easy as extracting a character's sprite and getting a 30x30 pic out of it. Same for the fight portrait, just get an 80x80 pic.

I like the new look of the select screen, but I am really not a fan 2k1's lifebars, they are a bit too boxy for my tastes nor do they have the old school charm of older KOF lifebars.

Sorry for the long week of no updates. I've been busy with a lot of stuff for the past few weeks (there's our pre-finals and playing Persona 4 and 2k2UM plus other personal stuff).

Anyway, I finally managed to finalize the menu screen.



You can't notice bec. it's just a picture but the red menu cursor is actually animated using a trick I learned from a screenpack from one of my personal fav. screenpack makers. That Geese pic isn't just him as well, it fades in and out into different characters (mostly KOF98UM to keep it consistent).


Btw, I completely suck at making logos, seriously. The best I could come up is this...

The Menu screen is really very very nice. Can't wait to see that animated. :)
As for the logo, the flames need work, as they don't contrast enough with the name IMO, but apart from that it's not so bad.

Well, the concept is great. maybe you just need to sprite it more, remove the antialiasing on the letters and make it look less JPG artifact. The Font of KOF is good (KOF 2000?). Infinite match should have vertical gradient instead of center-out, but the font style is ok. The flame thing in the BG is very KOFish.

Perfect? no.
Good? yes.
Areas of opportunity and it'll be fitting and awesome ^^

Progress is going great. I'm already more than halfway to finishing everyone's big portraits and I'm still working on them as we speak.



If you wonder why I didn't change it back to that world image it's because it was actually really bad. If you just saw it in motion you'ld understand.

Ack sorry, my laptop can't handle capturing videos at 640x480. Very very choppy.

What kind of music you gonna have playing for the select screen?
At this point I have no idea. I've been changing it over and over again. I'm using MI1's music at the menu and vs screens at the moment. I don't know where this select screen music I'm using came from, however. I got it from a screenpack I've had for over 5 years now.

I highly recommend using the KOF95 select screen music, AST version. Sounds awesome and should mesh well with the old school look you decided to use.

Nah, I kinda suggest teh 98UM version of the character select.

And don't forget to add some references to 94. Of course, that goes without saying, but a lot of people seem to forget the series progenitor.

Some of the stages from that game if stages will be added into the MUGEN thing on its own. And maybe some music from there as well.

Of course, the US sports TEam themselves are big enough reference already.

Well since you've put in the alternate Kyos, how about the other alternates?  Orochi Iori & Leona, HK Yashiro, Chris and Shermie and Omega Rugal.  That'd fill the 6 remaining slots and turn your "H" into a nice big square.  Very nice screenpack btw.

I think you should separate the coloumns in teams of 3 or 4 and leave in the middle astand a lone coloumn for the extra chars that doesn't fit in any team.

Btw did you even read the previous pages? That's actually what the screen looked like before I added everyone in the middle.

I think adding more columns would start squishing the name.  ie: the name would start bleeding onto the portrait.

If I had one tiny, o so little issue, it would be that Rugal and O. Rugal look like the same when they could look a touch different.  Perhaps you can give normal Rugal a portrait from his '98 stance to make them look a little different.  Fantastic work though.

I'd say that you could put the character names on the bottom of the first player and top of the second player portraits, then space out the teams from the middle.
