Maybe i am wrong but 5 years ago when winmugen was released i saw people creating alot of mugen stuff like characters, stages, screen packs. Two years ago people were still releasing quite alot of stuff but i see people have decreased releasing new stuff. Maybe because most of the popular characters are already created? and they do not want to reinvent the wheel?

Yeah, the golden age of Mugen was some years ago. Nowadays, there are less creations, but the forums are still pretty active, and the community is far from being dead.

there is a weird mentality that always permeated the community where people dont want to do characters that are already made by others in some kind of "fear" of being compared. Some actually do it exactly because they want to be compared and show that they are better than the other versions tho.
All in all, there is less persons willing to learn and stick around, the strong atmosphere of before turned off a LOT of people that would have stuck around, and without those more casual persons forming a wider base, new comers often will find it awkward to adjust.

Aw, but there are a lot of characters still to be made. Movie characters, anime characters, comic characters, anything. Not to mention original characters.

ONLY THEY REQUIRE SPRITING AND PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE TO SPRITE STUFF SINCE 3D IS TEH SHIT AND 2D IS FOR LOSERZ.

There's actually quite many fighting games that haven' had chars. converted yet. Most of them obscure. When was the last time somene made a character from Martial Masters or Kaiser Knuckle? It only falls to people actually having interest in them and them completely ignoring tards who bs at the chars. just bec. they think the games are awful.

I'm gonna introduce a new factor here just because and say part of this is also because a lot of energy is being dumped in those eternal full game projects, for better or worse.

I have two words for you: Killer Instinct. Damn, there's even a template and spritepacks, and no one did a decent char since Mike Obrecht's Eyedol...

Then again, I ain't sure there are less releases: it's just that 50% of the releases/ 75% of the projects are plain junk.

They are also less believable, instead of aiming to do a full killer instinct character or a sf2 character, they try to go for arms races, making the unbeatable ryu demon eyes, or trying to make a character to compete with the most well known ones. ( tiring themselves before even completing half of it)

Standards for a work to be considered worth it has increased a lot too, so now you have to put more effort into things, making it more time consuming (and scaring new people aswell) .
Amount of already converted character seens to be of little importance here too. Vega/Claw is one rather popular character, yet I don't think there's more than 3 conversions around...?

Yet that doesn't stop people from creating sprite swapped, palette swapped, or uncropped with no transparency characters and calling them releases.

The same thing goes for all of these "complete games" which are nothing more than compilations of characters already made, and as already stated, "dream projects" which are nothing more than project topics with idea engineering.

  • Somebody PM when Caddie is no longer a mod.
What you are having is gap of new to old. Old are stuck in full game madness. The new have stopped putting out shit and working on the real thing. I have a feeling, that the old timer full games and the new talent, will be finishing around the same time. A flood is most likely coming, followed by a surge of spriteswaps and then another gap.

Dudes what are you talking about? in 2005 just three or four characters used to be released weekly at most. Now some days it could even be 8 and there's stuff that sometimes never reaches the news. And there's the stages, screenpacks, etc. Not to mention tons of daily updates.

There are even more new games to get sprite rips from (plus many old ones that haven't even been ripped yet)

There's WAY damn more mugen stuff now. What could happen is that the stuff isn't posted at MFG all the time, be it that the files are good or bad. But MFG does contribute a lot to the new released files.

A lot of the old outdated stuff needs to be replaced more by better works, so there's still plenty of breathing room.

I think part of the thinking that there's less being released is because more and more AI patches are starting to crowd mugen news sites and whatnot. It's annoying finding the half of a thread's page being nothing but "AI patch for so and so character"

I keep hearing the same thing for about 10 years...and people still release things :)

And that are a LOT of unconverted chars yet.
