Hi, this is a really simplified way of creating higher res (def?) sprites off of existing lower res (again, def?) ones.

It's not supposed to be the awesomest way ever, since I'm not awesome at spriting anyway, but it'll help those that may not have thought of this because they feel they can't sprite at all, period. Those of you who can probably do this already, probably have an even better method.

As an example, I'll pick a popular character that everyone's tired of looking at in his original form:

SSJ Goku from Dragon Ball Z: Super Butouden 3.

Step 1: Find a sprite sheet or rip it yourself. I found one ripped by a dude or chick called Kramlack (it says in his spritesheet that credit isn't mandatory, but I think it's classy and appropriate so I'll do it anyway), then pick a sprite.

Step 2: Use any program that doesn't employ any sort of anti-aliasing and increase the sprite to 4 times its size (you can choose more or less, but the more you choose, the more space you have to add detail).

Step 3: Use any color that'll stand out from the rest of the palette to draw your character on top of the existing sprite. Using a program that allows layers is going to make your next step easier. It's also great if you sort of know how to draw the character. If you're not great though, it's definitely easier doing it this way than drawing him from scratch.

Step 4: Get rid of all colors except for your outline.

Step 5: Fix/add details to complete the illustration.

Step 6: Fill in your picture with some basic colors to see how it looks (it's not important that they're perfect right now. It's just to give you an idea of which color you're going to use for which area and whether the color looks okay).

Step 7: Color your picture. In this case, I decided to color it and shade it my way, instead of following the original sprite, but you can keep it faithful, if you want. I personally pick three colors for each area: 1. The outline, 2. The shade, 3. The default color.

FINALE: Here's an animated gif showing a comparison of both sprites!

HOPE THIS HELPED!

Here was is what the process for Street Fighter II HD was suppose to be until they released those crappy quick fixes.(not far trashed, but terrible in comparison and animation)

and neither were actual sprites, either, because they use way too many damn colors

not a bad process... :)
But, try to use the actual colors of the original sprite.
And also the number of colors of the original sprite.
This way, your sprite could be better.

Good luck.

Pretty good except the face as mentioned. Just looks a little scrunched. Otherwise looks fantastic and only other thing is the color of his gai could be a little darker orange.

may i suggest to use a second example with a more detailed original sprite, the face and hands really required you to draw almost from scratch, a slightly bigger sprite might be a better example.

I guess I reap what I sow... Here you go. Original Palette, mostly.

Here's a comparison.

For those curious, the change takes place during Step 3. Instead of sticking with the main lines, you will have to outline every single shade in the original and then use those separations to know where to put the colors.

It's the EXACT same palette as the original sprite. Only exception are the eyes and the laces on the boots (which, now that I've noticed, are incomplete).

Here are the alternate steps 5 and 6 for the new process.

Good.
It's far better this way, pal.
The original sprite color is more interesting.

Yeah, I know... the eye could be a bit less covered by the arm. Oh, well...
