Alright, so here's a new idea I came up with.
Remember how Ratchet & Clank for PS4 is both a remake of the PS2 original AND a movie tie-in game at the same time?
Well, KOF Destiny would be very similar in the sense that it would be both a remake of the original KOF94 AND a tie-in game to the CGI anime of the same name.
Confirmed teams so far:
  • Team Japan (Kyo Kusanagi, Benimaru Nikaido, Goro Daimon)
  • Team Fatal Fury (Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi)
  • Team Art of Fighting (Ryo Sakazaki, Robert Garcia, Takuma Sakazaki)
  • Team Queens (Mai Shiranui, Yuri Sakazaki, King)
  • Team Kaphwan (Kim Kaphwan, Chang Koehan, Choi Bounge)
  • Team Psycho Soldiers (Athena Asamiya, Sie Kensou, Chin Gentsai)
  • Team Ikari Warriors (Ralf Jones, Clark Still, Heidern)
  • Team US Sports (Heavy D!, Brian Battler, Lucky Glauber)
Confirmed bosses so far:
  • Billy Kane
  • Geese Howard
  • Rugal Bernstein
Aside from having an Arcade Mode, which would be a close recreation of the original KOF94 Arcade Mode as well as updated visuals (based on CvS) and audio (based on KOFXIII, KOFIV and the anime itself), the game would also have a proper Story Mode, where you can relive the original anime moments in the form of a chain of battles, with each battle having specific stipulations or gimmicks to the battle that serve to recreate the anime even more, all with cutscenes sprinkled inbetween the battles.

Now here's the problem: although I definitely know I want the core gameplay to be as KOF as ever, I...actually don't know what gimmicks I could add to the gameplay system that would be fun and would still make sense in the context of the anime while also making the game itself feel like a modernized new take on KOF94.
So yeah, I would be really glad if anyone of you guys could give me tips or ideas for system gimmicks. Thanks in advance!

I have a question: How are you going to make this work in M.U.G.E.N.? I doesn't support King of Fighters-style tag team. It will just select random opponents to battle with.

You should use those Chinese kof destiny sprites they look awesome
and for gameplay ideas do you, make a list of mechanics you love
about kof and start from there.

Brainstorm something simple at first like kof 94 and slowly build up
your template character with more stuff until your comfortable with the gameplay
and then post a beta for additional feedback.

Dont worry yet about esthetics like fxs, hitsparks, screenpacks ECT, get
the gameplay ready for feedback and then we can help you with stuff
like maybe adding more mechanics from other games and what not.

Oh. Well, now I'm kinda in a pickle, since I originally wanted to use CvS-styled sprites of the KOF Destiny designs, but your suggestion is really tempting simply because it actually exists.

Ah, okay. Well, for gameplay, one idea I have is to make a gameplay system that is some kind of "Best of" of all Orochi Saga games while maybe also including derivative of the Neomax system from KOF13. But...what even is considered the best of all the Orochi Saga games in terms of gameplay system mechanics?
