I've got a question. If I uses somebody elses sprites with permission, and make a char, can I let the sprites of the char to be open source?

The problem is that, we have permission for a char for Project X from old times, to fully use it, and I'm editing this char's sprites, but the original author is no more online (left mugen scene), so I can't ask him, if I could make the sprites open source.
Make your edits open source. Or since it is easier to get full game rips now than long ago just use artmoney and rerip the sprites. Then you would have the "authority" to make them open source.
Hmm, if I make the char with other author's sprites, than I later rip the sprites myself too, and release the sprites too with the char, can I make it open source?
Only AFTER you rip the sprites.Since you will have taken the time like the creator had done you won't have to replace the sprites with your own. To help others more when you release the newly ripped sprites (if you are using artmoney or some debug method) don't crop them. Release the sprites like I do as a pack and not cropped. This way people can have the axis. You may even discover you need to fix some axis in your creation. (depending on how the original author ripped the sprites)
Great, if I'll have time for it I'll rip the sprites later, and make my char into open source. Thanks for helping me out.

But since I doubt I will update the SMF to revive NMWForum I'll hope she does not mind me announcing this here instead.Would someone please update this "list" or make an Open source board to keep this stuff more organized. I already contacted Sepp to see if he wants access to my database to add anything NWM Forum may have had of value to this forum. My vacation kinda changed my life so I won't be doing anything else anymore with mugen, hacking, ripping, etc. I guess I'll pack up my uncleaned rips and upload them as 7zip files. The NWM.com and NWM.net will stay up untill april of 2006. Feel free to upload my spritepacks to your websites or whatever to preserve them on the net anytime before or after my space goes down.
All my Mugen stuff becomes Open source as long as i'm credited and warned by mail. Good luck to you tds.

All my stuff is free. Past, present and future. Yes, I know it ain't a lot. But hell, it's something. EDIT: Duh, forgot to thank RS ( http://randomselect.piiym.net/ ) for hosting. Kisses to KFM for that. EDIT2: From Winane's post, I'ld prefer if whomever uses my shtuff gives credit. But other than that, it's okay. 8)
There are different types of "free" and different types of "open source"*, and I see some people aren't clearly specifying which type they mean. So as to reduce the chances of confusion in the future, I'd suggest to anyone who hasn't already clearly specified, please do so. In particular, it'd be good to specify whether credit is required, whether hosting is allowed, whether (and how much) modification is allowed, whether commercial use is allowed, whether an attempt to notify you of use is required, and whether you'd like to "copyleft" your work ().If public domain isn't your thing, I'd suggest taking a look at the set of available Creative Commons licenses, and either choose the one most to your liking, or use them as inspiration for coming up with your own terms of use.*And I rather dislike the term "open source". Technically, nearly all Mugen stuff that gets released is open source, even if it's not free (as in freedom) source. =P

I already said this in my release thread, but it's also worth mentioning here. Ryu-X, Ken-X and PokeAthena are totally open-source. You can do anything you want with them. Feel free. The possibilities are limitless! I currently have no real website to link to, but Random Select should have them if you'd like them.
I know I'm not a know mugen creator, but when I do, whatever I create is free, just PM and tell me what you plan to do.
