I may be wrong, but should not these have a root redirect?

Only if the keyctrl argument for the Helper state controller is set to 0, otherwise the helper will read the root's commands by default; in that case, you'll want to make sure that the helper doesn't accidentally enter any states that you don't want it to, since it will also inherit whatever hardcoded behavior (ie: walking states) plus anything that's defined in Statedef -1 (which can be resolved by simply adding an !ishelper trigger for any changestates you don't want the helper to use). You're probably just better off leaving it at 0 and throwing on a root redirect to save yourself the extra work unless you know what you're doing.

.
.

I won't pretend to be a saint, as pride is definitely something that I've struggled with, even to this day. This was not an easy decision for me to make, having poured so much effort over the past decade and a half, but I did say that I wouldn't be leaving entirely, because I still do believe the engine (IKEMEN especially) has potential for what it was originally intended for, and if I can pass on what I learned during this time then it might give me a renewed sense of purpose.

.
.
.

I apologize if anyone has felt like that I had betrayed them, as that was never my intent. Maybe the part about "for the sake of your own souls" may sound a bit extreme, but I was mostly referring to utilizing assets without the permission of the copyright holder and/or were obtained through illegal methods; obviously the former wouldn't apply to companies like Capcom and SNK that already gave the go-ahead years ago. I'm not got to enforce any strict standard on how people should approach this, as I trust in everyone's judgment to approach this responsibly, but I felt that I had to say what I said the only way I knew how; I want the community and aspiring devs to be able to enjoy what the engine has to offer in a responsible manner. I see it as a similar situation to hiding and/or destroying bottles of alcohol belonging to a person who is clearly an alcoholic; there is no malice behind it, it's an act of love: a desire to will the greater good of the person.

.

I know this has been emotional for both of us and there's some other things we discussed privately that I won't mention here out of respect, unless you're fine with it. But as I already explained to you in private, this has been an emotional rollercoaster for me. I apologize for not having confided this in you sooner since you were really the only person in the community that I considered a close and trustworthy friend, and I regret not having done so out of fear of being ostracized for sticking out like a sore thumb due to having some unpopular opinions.

.

The inspiration is mutual; you've actually inspired be to focus more on my own character designs and worldbuilding and, on at least one occasion, to go back and modify one of my older creations after seeing your take on it. Maybe there was a sense of jealousy involved to an extent, but I won't deny that you had an influence on me as well. If there's any concerns you have that you'd like to discuss privately, I'll be happy to listen.

EDIT: So, I want to bring up one thing, because my post felt a bit aggressive. You should absolutely do what feels best for you, but on that note, I think the beliefs that led you to the choice you're making right now are only going to harm you in the long run. Its okay to have faith, but like anything in one's life, faith, in excess, is harmful and I think you crossed that threshold.
.

I still have fond memories of the Mugen Class section, it just feels like a shame that the place isn't as active as it once was back in the day. Thanks for reminding me that the place exists, as I now have a better sense of how I can continue to be part of the community despite my rather strong words. If I tread down any wrong roads on my IRL spiritual path, I trust that the Lord will redirect me if and when I do reach those crossroads, as this is still a relatively new journey for me.

.

As mentioned before, I was referring mostly to ripped assets but you should still try to seek out the stance/permission of the IP holder before trying anything. Respecting the creator's wishes is an act of love for them, even if you don't necessarily like or agree with them.

.

I appreciate the kind words and I would still love to help out the community in any way that I can, even if my stance on certain methods used in asset creation as changed. I've already said what was on my mind but, as I mentioned, the engines still have their legitimate uses and anything I can offer toward that goal I see as an act of love.

.

I think you summed up my stance on the second point pretty well. The people who did the work deserve some kind of compensation for their time and effort, and I suppose that guilt is what pushed me to take this step.

.

ZUN still has his guidelines regarding fangame creation, and the prohibition on using game ripped assets is something that has weighed heavily on my conscience for a very long time. Perhaps once day, Incident Zero might be revived using completely new and original assets to comply with his guidelines? I won't rule out that possibility; if anything, it would give me even greater creative control over it (including monetization possibilities but I don't want to jump the gun here) and I would be able to continue bring people over to both Touhou and Mugen/Ikemen in a way that would leave me clear of a guilty conscience. I won't make any promises if that will be the next step or not, but I trust God will guide me if I ever do reach those crossroads.

.

Re: permissions; I have strong doubts that he would allow it due to the guidelines that I previously stated and I feel that the language barrier would provide an additional obstacle, so I felt the best course of action for now was to simply respect his wishes. That's not even mentioning the music assets that were being used, many of which were from various sources, which provides an additional complication.

Re: the confession; I didn't go too much into detail but I explained the general situation that I had used assets from an illegally downloaded game and his advice was to see what he wants you to do with it. Considering his guidelines, I knew the answer was pretty obvious so I decided to respect his wishes.

.

I feel that the commissioned sprites might be the exception to this due to being original creations, even if they are largely based off of existing assets, and have no problem with people continuing to use those. It's the reason I included the license txt files when I released them. There is, however, still the issue of non-original assets such as FX and sounds, which I've already addressed in one of my previous answers.

Would it be better if explain why you written that post in such a overly serious and rigid tone? It sounded absolutely nothing like you would ever write before and almost feels like you had someone watching over you the entire time.

I guess part of it was me letting my emotions get the better of me after seeing some of the responses and it affected my tone. I apologize.

Hopefully all this provides everyone with some clarity. Thanks to everyone and God bless.

I had a feeling when I made my retirement announcement that I might ruffle a few feathers but I'm seeing some pretty vitriolic comments in response (mostly on Discord), even from some people in the community who I considered collaborators and friends. The damage that has been done to my reputation as a result of this is something that I was willing to accept, even if it was worse than I anticipated. If this were a gaff or a joke, would I be willing to take that kind of risk? I feel like part of this is my own fault for not being as transparent as I should have been.

If you have any questions, leave them here and I'll try to answer them. I need some time to collect my thoughts and hopefully add further clarity to this situation.

Well, it was inevitable, but I've finally decided to make the decision after 16 years to semi-retire from the MUGEN and IKEMEN scene. This was not an easy decision for me to make, and there is more than one factor involved, so I will do my best to outline them.

The first of these factors is due to real world obligations. My original passion by getting involved in creating MUGEN content was to one day become a software and/or video game developer. Unfortunately, what started as a passion project later turned into an obsession. It began to detract from both my career and social life, as there were times where I felt that if I wasn't pushing out new content on a regular basis that I wasn't doing anything. Eventually, as I began work on Touhou: Gensokyo Reloaded and Touhou: Incident Zero, it began to detract from everything else, and public releases and updates came to a slog (the last thing I released was Futo back in October 2022). In short, I no longer felt motivated, though I initially dismissed this as a temporary feeling.

The second, and perhaps the much bigger, factor involved was my spiritual life. Anyone who has engaged with me over the years is probably aware that, especially since the early days, one of my largest paranoia was the fear of having my content taken down for copyright infringement, a fear that overcame me very greatly back in 2011 where I went so far as to post a fake Cease and Desist letter purporting to be from the legal representative of Team Shanghai Alice (the creator of Touhou Project, which almost all of my content is exclusively based on) as an excuse to step away from the community, only for me to come back in 2013 and admit to the lie. I bring this up because, over the past few months, I've begun to rediscover my Catholic faith, and began to reflect on all this and what I was really doing was breaking the Lord's commandment of "Thou shall not steal", especially considering how the game assets that were being used were not only being used against the original creator's wishes, but also because the source itself was not obtained in a legal or moral method. It became clear to me that this was no longer just a legal concern, but a spiritual one, and I will admit that this wasn't the only sin that I've committed.

I've consulted with my priest regarding this matter for guidance and I've come to the following decision; effective immediately, I will no longer be involved with development of Touhou: Gensokyo Reloaded, and development of Touhou: Incident Zero is hereby cancelled. I would like to offer my apologies publicly to ZUN and Tasofro in this matter for having wronged them in the eyes of God. I've also taken the additional step of removing all downloads to my MUGEN content and deleting both them and the pirated software from my hard drive, as I cannot condone keeping stolen goods in good conscience. While I cannot control what anyone else does, I implore anyone seeking to create and/or continue creating content for the MUGEN and IKEMEN engines to please seek permission from the copyright holder and/or creator before using them unless you yourself created them, not just for legal reasons, but for the sake of your own souls.

Regarding my position as an admin of Mugen Free For All, I had initially intended to also make this announcement to announce my stepping down but, after discussing this with the remaining staff, I've made the decision to stay on staff for the time being. While I can no longer condone creating MUGEN or IKEMEN content using illegally obtained assets or assets used against the creator's will, I still recognize MUGEN and IKEMEN's potential for what it was originally intended for: a fighting game engine, which has legitimate purposes for original content (The Black Heart is a perfect example of this). In light of this, the MFFA community still needs guidance and I would not want to place an additional burden on the other admins.

While things haven't gone exactly as I had initially planned, I feel that the coding and development knowledge that I had obtained is something that is priceless, and I feel obligated to share it in any way that I can, both in my future career path and with anyone who just wants to dabble with the engine as I did for the past 16 years. I apologize if making this post sounds prideful or boastful but it was something I needed to get off of my chest. I appreciate everyone who has helped me throughout these many years and the many friends that I've made along the way. Thank you for reading this and God bless.

This seems pretty interesting so far. When do you feel like releasing a demo?

I know this reply is super late, but some significant progress on the demo has been done over the past few months. Hopefully a release of the demo should be available by Summer 2023 at the earliest, late Fall at the latest.

It's been a long while since I posted any progress here, but now that a working demo of the game is about halfway done, I've updated the first post with the starting roster of the game's first demo:

Not all characters that have been publicly released will be available in the game from the start, and will be gradually added in blocks of approximately 4-6 characters as more story routes are added.

I've been putting this project on the backburner until recently. While I've been releasing the characters for a while, as far as the actual game goes, not much progress was made until fairly recently. This thread will showcase the progress that has been made.

The first order of business is, of course, the HUD. Since IZ is using Ikemen GO for its engine instead of the modified Ikemen engine used by Gensokyo Reloaded, pretty much everything is being done from scratch. The HUD is still a work in progress, and some of the characters have had to be reworked, namely the ones with their own gauges for their own mechanics, in order to fit in to new layout, as well as resolving some issues due to changes in the system mechanics over time, as not all characters have been updated with the recent changes yet. Due to this, the initial builds will not include all publicly released Incident Zero characters, as well as making balancing slightly easier by working in chunks rather than dumping in all 18 chars at once.

If the screenshot didn't make it apparent, the game will be running in a 16:9 aspect ratio with stage zoom.

Im sure most people interested learning programing /coding is looking to use their skill to make games like my KOF XI Or my Remake of MVC2 and not to use it to program flying 2d midget Women/children..... GOOD BYE

At least people are paying me to help them with their big headed anime dolls of mugen. Where's your customer receipts? That tone of voice combined with that unrealistic price of yours is really bad business etiquette you know. Maybe you could use one of my lessons? I'll even give you a 25% discount, that's $15 no down payment. This deal is so good I'm literally [$!$$]ing myself.

I've been charging $40 for this same service for years, I'm not about to let some competitor just waltz in and steal my business.

That's why for the month of November I'll be lowering my prices to just $20 now. You'll get better service for a fraction of the price. You don't want to miss out on this [SPECIL DEAL].

The 18th Incident Zero character, the feng shui-manipulating shikaisen, Mononobe no Futo, has been released. Special thanks to Blade/Darkart for the sprites.

Apologies if progress has been slow, but the majority of focus has been on the development of the Gensokyo Reloaded fullgame. Moving forward, progress should hopefully begin on a working demo of the Incident Zero fullgame.

Except people don't normally joke like that?

I would have laughed off the Austin Powers reference if it was only targeting characters like Bridget rather than specific people in the Mugen community, but the pedophilia accusations and multiple instances of flamebaiting in general is hard to ignore and pass off as "just a joke"

So while working on development of Futo, I also took some time into rebalancing some of the system mechanics, as it was fairly clear that the Type-A [Power] alignment had some significant advantages over the Type-B [Speed] alignment that nearly made the latter almost never worth using over the former. These changes seek to rectify that:

  • [System] Type I and Type II chaining is no longer character-dependent, and instead now exclusive to Type-B (Speed) and Type-A (Power), respectively.
  • [System] Type-A (Power) Spirit Gauge now behaves identical to its Type-B (Speed) counterpart.
  • [System] Spirit Gauge no longer increases with forward movement.
  • [System] Last Words can now be performed during both Type-A and Type-B, but now require the user to be at 20% Life or less (except if used during Spell Trance).
  • Bomb: Command changed to X+Y+Z+A (or A+C)
  • Bomb: Can now be done during any alignment. Now has its own gauge separate from the spirit gauge.
  • Bomb: Can now be performed while in hitstun, but cannot be done if hit by grabs or Supers.
  • Crush Attack: Command changed to B (5b), now requires 50% spirit gauge instead of 500 Power.
  • Spell Trance: Power requirement removed.
  • Spell Overdrive: Now requires 100% Spirit instead of 1000 Power.
  • Spell Overdrive: No longer grants medium Normals ability to be cancelled into heavy Normals due to chaining types being merged with alignments.
  • Spell Overdrive: No longer allows Spellcards to be performed for free, now reduces Dash Cancel's Spirit cost to 0%.
