Configuration Queries

Hello, everyone. Just a few little questions concerning some aspects of MUGEN customization. In Mugen1.0, is it possible to...

1. Assign team mates to characters? In other words, arrange it so that in Team Arcade mode, a certain character will ALWAYS be paired with another; like Mario and Luigi for example.

2. Assign specific color schemes when fighting the same character? For instance, if I play as Superman and end up fighting Superman in arcade mode, is it possible to make the duplicate character appear in his Bizarro coloration ONLY when fighting Superman?

3. Assign a specific song to play for specific characters on specific stages in Vs. Mode? In Arcade Mode, we can assign for a character to always appear on a certain stage with a unique song in the background. Is it possible to do such a configuration in which, let's say we have a Sonic the Hedgehog level background. It has music from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in it. But if you actually play as Sonic in this level, it will instead play music from Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Is this only a possibility in Arcade Mode?

I understand my questions are oddly specific, but they were simply elements that I thought would be fun to include if possible. If not, I won't be terribly surprised, but I figured I might as well ask.

Depends. Is there any specific difference between standard animation and sprite animation?

Cartoonist Interested in Making Characters. Need Programmer.

August 18, 2010, 05:20:57 pm View in topic context

Hey, everyone. I'm a cartoonist who lately has been suffering from a serious lack of motivation. I need a project to get me interested in cartooning again and, hey, what better choice than to work on some material with some of my favorite cartoon characters in one of my favorite video games, right? The thing is, all of this coding nonsense to actually make characters work is just plain over my head. So I figured I'd do all of the artwork for the characters and see if some dumb shmuck... I mean... helpful person would like to help code for the characters' attacks!

I've got several characters in mind as well as movesets and I'd really like to create some characters for MUGEN who feel more authentic to their source material or maybe just a bit on the silly side. For example, the first character I'd like to work on would be Sonic the Hedgehog, with a few attacks such as:

Super Sonic Power-Up
-When the Special Bar is filled, transform into Super Sonic, boosting all stats as the bar slowly drains.

Projectiles
-Weak Punch: Gold Ring
-Normal Punch: Power-Up Monitor
-Strong Punch: Chaos Emerald

Buzzsaw
-Similar to the Blob's buzzsaw move from Clayfighter, strongest form of it surrounds Sonic in flame ala the Sonic 3 fire shield and temporarily stuns the opponent. But use it too many times and Sonic gets a hot foot, running around the stage uncontrollably while his sneakers burn.

Now You See Me, Now You Don't!
-Sonic zips off of the side of the screen, then in behind the opponent and kicks him in the butt before laughing and zipping back to the side he was originally on.

Guitar Smash
-Swings an electric guitar like a mallet at the opponent

Amps
-Hooks up huge amps and plays guitar loudly, blowing opponent back with music notes

Tennis
-Kicks the opponent into the air, pulls out a tennis racket, and zips back and forth across the screen a few times, playing tennis against himself with the opponent as the ball.

Werewolf
-A full moon rises upward, turning Sonic into his werewolf form from Sonic Unleashed, he then lunges at the opponent, resulting in a fight cloud and lots of howling/attack sounds, ending in a gulp. The cloud fades, leaving only werewolf Sonic, who hiccups, then burps and spits out his opponent and transforms back into himself, looking disgusted.

If anyone out there is interested in making some creative and silly MUGEN characters, please contact me! I think this would be a lot of fun! If you're curious about my artistic ability, my deviantART gallery is questionthemajority.deviantart.com and here are a few sketches of Sonic specifically:

I suppose that's it, huh? Drat. There are a few palettes I liked having available to play with, but didn't really like having the characters I fought against have them. Like Megaman with red armor, for instance. Oh well.

Is there any way to ensure that ONLY certain palettes will appear with randomized opponents? I tried using the pal.default section in the characters' .def files, but it doesn't seem to be making any difference.

Finally got it working. Apparently, my toying around with the palettes was unappreciated.

I'm truly baffled here. I've been using WinMugen Plus with the Alpha Storm screenpack for some time now. Today, I was fine-tuning my characters' palettes and suddenly, BAM, Mugen decides it doesn't like me anymore and stops working entirely!

After several unsuccessful tries to boot Mugen, I finally gave up and redownloaded WinMugen Plus and Alpha Storm, installed them, and moved all of my character, stage, sound, and data files over. Now it works just fine. Okay, great! Except... HEY! Where'd my music go? Everything's playing great, but my background music is gone and without the stage themes, it just feels kind of... empty.

So, any ideas on what the heck is going on here?

Perhaps. Unfortunately, Coding is like Greek to me, so I'd have no idea where to begin.

Hey, everyone. I've been away from the MUGEN scene for a while, but I recently decided to download it again and give it another shot. I've got a lot of characters now, but for some reason, I can never play a game in Arcade Mode in which I fight more than one character. After defeating my first opponent, it's "Congratulations" and game over! What's the deal?

Just gave the character a shot and its great! Although I definitely agree with the people who've mentioned a voice change. The young, teenage voice coming from a very adult Starfire is disconcerting.

I need to download and try this character in a bit once I'm done with work. I'd also like to see versions of each of the Titans as seen in the animated series. I've always been fond of funny superheroes. And, for the record, people can say whatever they like to try to prove to me that I am mentally inferior to them for enjoying wacky portrayals of such characters; but hey, it's my opinion, so bite me.

Also, concerning most people's confusion with the motion of her breasts, perhaps that's just Tamaranean physics? I'm honestly most confused by the fact that so many superheroines and fighting game women wear outfits like that and manage to keep themselves covered!

Re: Artist Seeks Programmer for Possible Sprite Creation. Must Love Dogs.

the style is interesting, you can use this forum's gfx art forum to polish your sprite style. actually, there are two different aproaches, one is to actively look for a programmer, the other way is to make the sprite set and make it public so any creator can take it's jab. both methods have advantages and disdvantages. y suggestyion for you would be to first work on a few sprites and show them to interest more people.

I was actually hoping to go for a hand-drawn look as I ultimately want to have a downloadable MUGEN game on my comic site featuring the characters from my comic series.

I really hope my sarcasm is evident with that "dogs" line. Anyway, hi! I'm a cartoonist who'd love to make some MUGEN characters, but I have to admit I don't believe I have the time nor the patience for all of the programming. Anyone out there who'd be interested in collaborating on some new characters? If you'd like some examples of my work, check out my deviantART gallery as well as my fanart gallery for some examples of how I draw some well-known characters.

While I don't know of a site where you can get the real thing, my brother does a nearly perfect imitation of Waluigi's voice. If you're alright with getting an imitation, I'm sure he'd be glad to lend his voice to a character!

Fighter Factory and Notepad++ is all you need to create stages.

Read the docs and look at the other stage's coding to see how it's done.

Yeah, I just watched a nice little tutorial on YouTube about it. Doesn't seem too tough at all. As for screenpacks, I may just have to hunt someone down to do one or two for me. I can't seem to find tutorials for those anywhere!

I have Fighter Factory so I can make characters now, but is there a program available to create stages and the various screens (options, title, select, etc)? If not, could someone please give me some advice on how to do these these? I'm sorry to ask for so much, but I've really been wanting to put together my own MUGEN game for quite some time now.

Speaking of One Piece characters and stages, is there a place where you can still get some of those for the game? I've heard some people mentioning that they have Luffy in their game, but I can't find him anywhere!

With all of this in mind, is there anyone around here who'd be interested in working with me on a test character? I could take one of the characters from my most recent comic and do the artwork for all of his or her moves. I'd just need someone to do the coding and maybe help come up with a good moveset since I've never made a character like this before. If you're interested, check out my website and see if you'd be interested in working on one of those characters and email me at questionthemajority@gmail.com about it.
