I recommend at least giving it a shot and see how you like it. It's effective in learning the meaning, you won't learn any kun-yomi/on-yomi at all (the readings). However, I personally learn about the kanjis in a word rather than the reading because some kanji have way too many readings, and the rules which reading you use, etc. can be tricky ( like た can become だ in some compounds, け can become げ, etc.)
(ex: 友達「ともだち」) tomodachi
友-とも tomo
達-たち tachi
I find myself using this site along with the Heisig approach + rikaichan. It has a pretty good flashcard system, but you can use Anki, which is also a flashcard SRS that can be the same. You can also download decks people made about studying hiragana, katakana, kanji, and vocabulary as well as grammar rules.

For grammar, I use this site. It's probably the best thing I found because you will also learn how casual Japanese is used as well as formal, which textbooks don't really do much when it comes to casual.

And if you want to learn a bit of vocabulary as well as a few kanji, this website can be pretty neat. It also gauges your progress and has a "leveling" system to it too.

Honestly though, it all boils down on how you want to study. I'm just posting some of the tools I am using.
