 Board: Your Releases, older Mugen

After a number of delays caused by many circumstances I had little to no control of, I've finally gotten Butt-Head out of the gate. I wasn't exactly sure what I was thinking back when I hoped to produce three original sprited characters by myself, but at least I did one of them. In the meantime I also took the opportunity to give Beavis a little bit of an update.

Beavis changelist:
  • New Standing Far Ligtht Punch Animation
  • New Aerial Guard Animation
  • Extended timeover lose animation
  • New custom state animations for collapse and shock
  • Air Throw given
  • Lightbulb super spark, carried over from Butt-Head
  • Special intro against Butt-head from the same author
  • Fixed the "victim faces the other way" bug in Violent Restitution by making the victim always face Butt-Head
  • Tweaked the command priority a bit so the LP+LK+direction gives a dodge rather than a command move attack
  • More voices there and there

Spoiler: Butthead screenshots (click to see content)

After a bit of feedback from Balthazar I also gave Sentro a bit of an update as well.
  • Mousers now detach themselves from the opponent when the round is over
  • Rolling Mines now shall only hit once for sure
  • Energy Pills don't leave the screen
  • Removed the "touch" collision damage of Robo-Rygars
  • Tweaked the attitudes of Jet Transformation flights
  • Restricted the Funnel Swarm to be only done if there isn't any Funnel onscreen to begin with
  • The stat screen now stays in for no longer than 5 seconds after being done calculating every stat
  • Some after-defeat debrises now adjust their angles to remain flat

Grab them at Logical Bends

  • Have you ever been in places aside of India and Iran (and where would you like to visit next)?
  • Sure, I'm asking this as a guy who knows what you've said about the thing in question on IRC channels, but is there at least one example of India mishap would you like to share here?
  • What would be the most dangerous of situations you've ever been in?
  • Most interesting anecdote shared by a relative of yours?
  • How would you estimate your chances of survival when India would get caught up in a middle-eastern conflict?
  • Would you imagine the western society ever getting a bit of their senses back?
  • Where you'd imiagine Call Of Duty would go next?
  • How did you stumble into Mugen in the first place again?

What's it like to be mistakenly credited for making UMKT Shang Tsung and Alter Amiba when both chars were Melvana's ideas?

Do you still dream of converting Dexter and Johnny Bravo somewhere down the line?

Worst MUGEN era in your opinion?

You and Meldo have caught some flak for that Tumblr page what points out some of the weird shit being done by the kids who run that one MUGEN wiki (i.e. Weegee's auto-troll-phic posts, Josh Geary wishing he was an administrator, and that Jellypus char's cringe-inducing "I hate Haruhi and want Rainbow Dash as my girlfriend HEY DANIEL I MENTIONED HARUHI CUZ YOU LIKE HER LOLOLOLOL!!!!!111" bio. Your thoughts on this?

Even though you spilled the beans on your being Most_Mysterious in the description of your Dink Smallwood storyboard vid ("My 14-year old self made this shit," I believe you said), kids still think that you and MM are separate entities. Thoughts?
  • All I can say is that with how far apart Melvana and me are with terms of coding ability, I'm not quite surprised.
  • When I made a 2014 resolution of churning out three non-collab originally-sprited characters (Butt-Head, Dink Smallwood remake and this one other character) I haven't denied the possibility of doing one more such character if I'd do really well this year (but it turns out the complete opposite happened) and even with my impeding desire to call it quits I still keep getting ideas for various characters (including april fools ones) so with 2015 leaving me with two characters I've planned so far maybe I'd get around doing Dexter or Johnny or Shaqnaris down the line, provided the future circumstances would still let me do more mugen content and I'd get really lucky with my motivation.
  • As tough as it is to pick one era when things have never been the most stellar for the engine, I'd say the the mDev/mRev era probably did the least favors, bringing along snub assholes with huge egos (so huge they'd write entire lengthy web pages for the sole purpose at flinging shit at other people) who never released their stuff and other things the engine and it's community still has trouble living down even after few of these were resolved.
  • Were there any places that gave us flak we're not already aware of (like we are on the wiki itself)? I'll just say that those in charge of the wiki do have some issues and I'd at least wish them somehow resolving them. While at it I'll redirect to my responses on the tumblr blog itself there and maybe there
  • Wow, I never knew my facade would be that effective with some people.
Seriously tho', some of these questions make me feel quite like Hideki Kamiya, after all how many questions I've gotten about my facade again?

Favorite character that's everyone's favorite character?
Would any of Terry Bogard, Joseph Joestar, Iori Yagami, Slayer, Slightly Pissed Off Ryu, Hazama, The Scout, Dan Hibiki, James Hettfield and dozens of others count?

- what is your next mugen achievement the_none?
I cannot exactly guarantee what it would be but I'd certainly aim whatever stuff I'd produce in the future to bring more of these.

What are you doing to combat the problematic misoginy in videogames?

In a scale of 1 to 100 how much of a fan of our lord and savior Anita sarkseesan are you? Would you follow her advice regarding videogames?
  • By having better ideas (and understanding on game design) than Sarkeesian.

Really tho' with few people I shared my ideas on what I'd do with a certain female protagonist-led franchise when I'd get ahold the rights of it by some really freak accident, and they've admitted that my ideas sounded so promising that if executed properly would result in something really special. The thing is, good part of these happen to be design related, I've basically envisioned a third person action game with a melee system around deep enough to be around on par with actual fighting games as much as possible, weapons that can also be used for various things in the environment (like cutting down ropes etc.), an element of stealth (I'd rather just provide a variety of possible playstyles than neuter some systems for the sake of "accessibility"), a large variety of enemies that would adapt to the player's attacks and playstyle, expanding upon few of the gimmicks the prior games have tried, basically the kind of stuff I hoped the franchise to attempt and succeed (and by the way, they were also impressed by few story-related ideas and the lengths I've expressed to research on some things for the benefit of the story).
There are way too many misguided people out there who insist that having a female protagonist (or a sensibly dressed female protagonist) would be enough to for a game to be "good", nevermind the execution of things that are actually relevant to the medium. Your favourite character would replace the protagonist of, say, Ninja Gaiden 3/Driv3r/Ride to Hell/Anything Gearbox Churned out after Brothers in Arms/someothercrap and it would still suck as that alone would not fix many of that game's crippling problems.
Suffice to say, making a good game would ultimately goes first.
  • I'd give her around 4 (amusing uses of her content I've found for my silly videos) points, plus maybe a bonus for not being that certain Nintendo fanboy from Boston.
  • I'd certainly follow her advice on constructing buildings wait wrong Sarkeesian, having a lengthy pop career uh not that Sarkeesian either, being a nurse dammit I keep mix things up, easy money making schemes by constructing an alter ego in a guise of nitpicking videogames theeere we go.

who's next
I sense King of Darkness: Advanced Warfare @K.O.D: seems to be willing to take the mantle.

Favorite and least favorite Street Fighter character and why?
Favorite and least favorite KOF/NGBC character and why?
You still have contact with Most_Mysterious?
Any plans on what your next "original" character could be (and with original, I meant things like Segalow and OTW)?
Any plans on updating some of Most_Mysterious other characters?
If you were to make a collab with someone you haven't collaborated with, who would it be and what character would that collab be?
  • I generally have trouble answering these kinds of questions so I'll just say I liked using Yang and Alex the most. Sakura I had the hardest time understanding why she ever exists.
  • The above also applies to KOF so I'll just ,mention Ash, Kim, Raiden, and few others characters I especially liked using.

  • Zach, I keep seeing people wondering about you. At least this new guy wasn't asking about that paperclip.
  • I've mentioned recently that I wanted to do a fullgame, I also had a few thoughts like bringing a character from a canceled fullgame to vanilla mugen or just someone new completely.
  • As I've mentioned before I'd like to remake Dink Smallwood, and he wasn't the only M_M character I've considered giving a complete overhaul. Other possible candidates were my childhood stickman Kung Fu Fiunn (simplistic artstyle which wouldn't be too hard to sprite in, he'd probably even serve as a guinea thing for using a 3D modeling/animation program for sprites) and Franko (his source game's crude artstyle may have encouraged that choice) but ultimately I chose Dink Smallwood because 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of my presence in the mugen community and I thought it would be a good idea to overhaul the character I debuted with. I may not be able to make it with 2014 (with how long it's been taking me to develop other stuff that has been taking my time) but I'm still serious about this, just so I would show some people how far I've progressed as a mugen author.
  • I may be learning graphics with Beavis and Butt-Head but it would be nice if I'd get a spriter who would do full characters rather than sub-bosses to do other characters I wanted to do this year (a remade Dink Smallwood) or at least help me with few graphics-related aspects like shading, that's one of the things I have trouble nailing it at the moment.

Never had the chance to ask this before but do you mind parts of your code being used into other works, Do you mind having a few gameplay elements from your characters borrowed?

What do you feel is the problem with "lel random" types of characters?
  • As long as there would be used properly/correctly (otherwise we get stuff like Cliff's Sub-Zero) I wouldn't mind. In fact I am kind of surprised that apparently not many authors if ever used my innovations (unless I'm wrong), although that may be the fault of me not documenting/commenting on my code lol.
  • The most I could say is that more often than not the lesser developers of these kinds of characters more often than not put much more "effort" into uninspired brand of "humour" (which usually happens to be simple references just cause rather than something that would actually go together well, to say nothing of not coming up with something with a more universal appeal) than properly designing/coding the characters. To further elaborate would require me to be capable of explaining my brand of magic, which I'm told it's impossible to explain even if I'd be otherwise capable of articulating on every other topic. Suffice to say, you don't go Seth McFarlane/Alex Ahad/Chris Faiella/Anthony Burch.
    Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

What is the one thing you wished Mugen had from a coding perspective?

Well I can recall few proficient in coding mugen authors lamenting a number of limitations in the engine, I'd wish I remembered what exactly their gripes were.
From things I do remember, a less convoluted way to do loops, real-time character sprite cropping (and masking functions in general), changing the display name on the fly, more control over hit states and being able to detect the current sprite number would be nice.
Oh, and the engine not crashing if the Target-- state controllers were called when two characters would get hit at the same time. As of now, let's just say there is quite a reason on why I put disclaimers on my characters' readmes about them not being suited for simul mode.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

It's a pretty general question, but strays from the videogame questions people usually toss out.
Well...... nothing in my life seems to be certain, many things can happen during in this timeframe (Myself from 10 years ago would never have thought I'd go as far as I did now), so there may be tiny chances that I'd end up being in a place I would have never predicted being.
One of the more optimistic scenarios involves me and a company I'd get along with doing cutting edge games (I have been aspiring to be a designer ever since my childhood), but with how shaky things are looking to be in the industry, chances are I may find some alternate career choice, even with a possibility of me alternating working on games and this other thing every now and then, and I have yet to fully decide on what that would be. Doing music was one of my considerations but I get a lot of second thoughts as soon as I have trouble making out good songs in my head (altho that may be just because I have yet to actually try composing), but when I do decide on that, I'd probably also enjoy making cover art and music videos for my stuff. In fact, I've been considering sort of retiring from mugen for at least two years now (I'd prefer for that to happen after I'd finish Butt-Head, Nu-Dink and this one other character I'll keep a secret for now) partly to move on with my life and leave myself with much more time to try out other things that would hopefully further define me as a person, altho' many would also suggest I'd just reconsider my approach to home time management, and they may not be wrong.
And that's when I don't end up fulfilling one of dozens of much less fortunate scenarios, really not the kind of stuff you would like to hear (and I'd really hate it to happen). My pessimism is rather well known among some of those who get to know me and so far the last few years don't do a good job of dissuading me much from it, to say it kindly.
Whatever the case, I think I can probably guarantee one thing:
Don't expect me to continue doing mugen content by then.

Alright, as it's 00:04 here and I have to get to sleep early as I have to wake up early the next day, I'll answer JAG92's and Iced's questions later. The latter especially merits a rather good answer from me I'd like to have more time to think up a good answer (and I'd guess it would further help if I would not be that much tired).

Once again it's night time here, and while writing this post I've been feeling so tired it will show a LOT here.
Your thoughts on the YT kids' inferior attempts at aping your Retarded Character Showcase series?
What other creepypastas would you have loved to reference in your Giygas?
Your thoughts on that new Hatred game?
Do you think that your jabs at the video game industry in your YTPs fly over the heads of your younger viewers?
Why isn't Haiji Mibu from Daraku Tenshi referenced in your Uppercut char? I mean, he'd have fit in nicely.
Do you think that Aracdboy may be smarter than his "My Reaction To SSB7 Wii U Bitch" posts make him out to be?
Childhood video games?
Fave cartoons?
Fave anime?
Do you feel that WAAAAAY too many people only remember you for DBK and not your other equally nutty and innovative works?
  • I can't believe kids are still doing those.
  • To be honest I barely pay much attention to what is up in creepypastas and was only really referencing them for my lack of other ideas.
  • It reminds me I myself had a rather interesting idea to twist on the Postal concept, and Hatred doesn't seem to be quite it, but who knows. Thats all I can say about the game itself, too tired to weigh in on the controversy surrounding it.
  • A lot of the things tend to fly over the heads of my younger viewers in general. Among things I did this short little video and not ONE of the YT kids have caught on that the video was made in John Turk's (the portrayer of MK3 Sub-Zero) 50th birthday.
  • Either I forgot about that or did not realize it.
  • Aracdboy is either the dumbest person on this planet or the most genius troll in the universe. But at least when he's dumb, it's charming. It's an innocent type of dumb. And that's what makes him so cool.
  • There were certainly too many to count during that time of my life so for now I'd probably mention two titles here. Brutal: Paws of Fury is an all-anthromorphic fighting game which attempted to try few ideas executed in a way that ended up crippling it (Between matches you'd attempt to learn a new move. The thing is you start out with no special moves at all and the first move you had to learn is a taunt with a stupidly difficult command). It also happened to be possibly the first game I've ever tried on an Amiga. On the subject of "first games on a platform" I'd also mention Shogo:Mobile Armored Division, whose demos I saw running on an IBM PC on a computer shop have pretty much convinced me to get a PC myself.
  • On my childhood I used to be pretty big on cartoons, and as of this moment Dexter's Laboratory, Looney Tunes, Beavis & Butt-Head, Freakazoid and many others, this list would probably grow larger by the time I'd revisit more shows.
  • I don't think I've watched any anime series that would merit being included here for long enough so if feature length movies are also viable I'd probably just mention Akira here. List may possibly expand in the future.
  • I'd think it may not be that easy to tell, few of my characters actually trump DBK when it comes to downloadcount but considering many of these characters were also updated at least once, I dunno I think I'd probably answer this question again as I really want to sleep, I've been writing this post for over 4 hours now.
Hey good to see you around here, mingling with the common folk ;)

-What is your 'dream' Mugen project considering you would have access to the sprites you desire/require + infinite time and motivation?
-Just how many people have come forth to you suggesting a collaboration with them/how many project offers did you have to say 'no' to?
-Which of your project releases are you most proud of?
-if you were cloned and we had double The_Nones, would this ultimately be a good or a bad thing?
-There's still 2 months left, but so far, did you keep any newyear's resolves you might have made the start of this year?
-Do you agree a song can't be a GREAT song if it lacks a guitar solo?

Keep it up, dude!
  • There surely are plenty of those. One of which I'll mention here is an original IP fullgame with a premise of an artist attempting a brainstorming idea by hosting an imaginary tournament inside his head. A small part of the cast I've considered happens to be partly inspired by some of the things from my pasts, including a stuffed toy, a silly Quake 3 Arena I did (reproduce from memory there), and even a number of unfinished and unreleased Most_Mysterious-era characters (I can't believe I forgot to brought this up back when I was answering Dr.Kelexo's unfinished characters question.)
  • I think I remember one guy asking me on whenever I'd feel like doing something using his spriterips, and back then I was probably too busy to follow through. As for the people I did agree to collaborate with, I think I can count to around 9 if my memory isn't fooling me.
  • I'd say Beavis would take the cake. He's a kind of a character I'd wish I could have executed that well some time earlier. Segalow and Shaq also deserve honorable mentions too I'd guess.
  • As with anything in life these days, this can be a rather double edged sword.
  • I hoped to churn out a Butt-Head, a remade Dink Smallwood and this one female character I wanted to do but as it turns out only the first of these has any chance it making it this year. Oh well. With how rather crappy years tend to be these days I can't recall giving myself any other resolutions.
  • It may depend.

Was Dink's killing of his aunt's abusive husband justified?
A guy who treats his spouse's nephew like an uninvited jerk (even accusing him of an affair, sounds like a guy who switched mates after being already married) and kenshiros the fuck out of his spouse does seem pretty suspect. Not the happiest of conclusions but....

man we dont talk much about games you actually enjoy, what is your favorite fighting game, rpg, and first-person shooter games? and i guess any other genres you have games you would mention in?
Keep in mind there are plenty of games I'd still like to try but have yet to find time to start and hopefully beat them due to how little time I tend to leave myself for games due to how often I try to focus on getting my mugen/video work done even though I was not always able to stay consistently motivated, maybe I should reconsider my approach to time management to cut down on days I end up spend most of my home time pretty much browsing the net. :P (It's also for this reason I don't often play "lengthy" games like how rpgs and sandbox games usually tend to be, but who knows, maybe I'd rectify that one day). So anyway here are the select specimen and I hope this list would be further expanded in the future, either by playing more games I'd end up liking or deciding some of the games I've played before I liked enough to be included here:
  • First Person Shooter:Doom, Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament, Half-Life 1
  • Third Person Shooter:Max Payne
  • Roleplaying:Deus Ex
  • Figthing:King of Fighters XIII, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Garou:Mark Of The Wolves
  • Stealth-based:Thief II:The Metal Age, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Hitman: Blood Money, Metal Gear Solid 1
  • Strategy:Worms: Armageddon (if it counts), Battlezone, FTL:Faster Than Light (if it counts)
  • Racing:Split/Second: Velocity, Trackmania
  • "Character Action" or whatever these kinds of games are called:Devil May Cry 3
  • Puzzle:Lemmings
  • Survival Horror:Resident Evil 4 (it says a bit about how much of a blast this game was even when played through that infamous SourceNext PC port with keyboard only when I didn't felt like waiting for my brother to get back my Joypad he tends to trade to his buddies without ever consulting me)
  • Space-Sim:X-Wing Alliance

By your personality, what video game protagonist trait do you think you have?
In your opinion, what is the best occupation to have in a video game?
If you can go back in time for about 30 minutes, where would you go to, and what would you do?

  • I've never been good at describing myself in person so I don't think I'm able to give concise answer on that one. Assuming you've meant what would possibly be my character traits. But if you've meant of what kind of stats and mechanics a character accurately based on me would have, then I barely have much of an idea either. My luck stat would probably not be very high after my personal experience, although that may be just me.
  • I have a feeling there may be an occupation that can profit a lot in a videogameland, but I cannot pinpoint exactly what that would happen to be. I have dibs on a business owner. (If the game and the setting would allow it)
  • Even knowing that my time travel alterations may have some consequences, I have nothing.

-What's the basic stuff is needed to make chars like you do, apart of knowing about MUGEN basics??
-I want your opinion about The Ninja. Apart of the feedback in the thread, what do you think this need to be closest to your creations?? Also I want to make a "The Ninja" series in a future based on other MK ninjas in this style (and some extras), but I'm not sure about that, not to mention to update The Ninja in a close future
-A question I made to Insanius originally, but I think you can answer this time:
-Do you think Earthworm Jim TV series is a cult classic and why hadn't released outside US since the games are successful worldwide??
-Have you played Joy Mech Fight from NES?? Do you think this is the best NES fighting game of all time, and why Nintendo doesn't include Sukapon on SSB series (apart of his trophy on SSB Melee)??
  • You asked a guy who happens to be not quite able of explaining his own brand of magic. And besides, I wouldn't exactly call most of my stuff "basic", as I tend to give some nuances in places to further add some bit of depth.
  • It's may be just me feeling REALLY tired at the time of this post but this coupled with the reason above I'm afraid I'm not able to explain it. Sorry to disappoint you.
  • Possibly. Also I'm not sure are you asking me about where the series ever received home releases (which only recently was released in a DVD in the US and Australia. Doug TenNapel's apparent dissatisfaction with the cartoon may have something to do with that) or when the series was ever aired outside of the states (I can certainly remember it airing on a German and Polish TV channels).
  • I think I can vaguely recall trying it out some time ago but one day I'd certainly reevaluate it. Also - trophies aside - I don't think Nintendo has ever featured anything from any franchise that didn't left outside Japan.
Do you need more time?
Some of the things tend to take me ages, like writing this post (much to my dismay).

I wanted to sleep so much that I'll answer Iced's, Trinitronity's, Daniel's and Arpa's questions later.
* Do you consider yourself to be any good at Devil May Cry 3?

* Any good movies happen in Poland lately or is it still a far cry from what Polish Cinema once was?

* How liberating does it feel when one discovers that he is capable of creating and animating sprites adequately?
  • It's been a while since the last time I played it but by the I've been replaying as Vergil shortly after beating it once as Dante I can recall things going reasonably smoothly, certainly smooth enough to transition into DMC4 without much trouble.
  • I have so little faith in Polish Cinema that I haven't paid much attention to it for quite some time. Suffice to say I'm not optimistic.
  • Maybe that's just a disililusioned me with motivational problems but I felt more liberated when I discovered I could swim all along. I dunno, maybe learning to shade adequately would make me more proud.

-Who's that guy in your avatar?
How do you not recognize Ian Curtis?!
That's assuming my avatar didn't rotate into a politician-type who got his head blown off.
Regardless, that question certainly made me consider adding more avatars into rotation so lol
-What gave you the idea to pose as your brother, rather than just somebody else entirely?
-How's life been for you?
  • It happened during a rather awkward transitional moment. Close to the arpil fools of 2005, looking up to stuff like DokiDokiMugen at the time I've publicly pondered how the creations I did during that time (which frankly I've progressed really far since these characters) would be received there. Then a certain notable person gave me an "should seiously consider quitting the internet" remark and after I've reacted in a not very dignified way few other notable names jumped at me. As you can see I haven't taken this advice literally, nonetheless this event was certainly a wake up call for me to start anew, and looking back at my earlier years, how I used to behave at the time (I had plenty of moments I am not proud of at all) and how far I've progressed since then I could have not be more glad this happened. As for why I exactly chose to pose as my 'brother', at the time I thought it would make a bit of "sense" for someone to take up the mantle of a relative after one calls it "quits". Ironically, my brother is not very good at 2D fighting games, and of today is possibly even more arrogant and immature than the stupid me of decade ago despite being an older brother. I could vent about his mishaps all day but then it would take me ages to write this post :P
  • My life has never been exactly good for at least a decade, certainly can't recall a single month I would describe as "good". I'll just say that as of this post my dad is still struggling with the alcohol addiction for around two weeks now, and ever since a company buyout has costed him a job he's been doing for at least two decades in 2008, I don't think I can recall him being employed anywhere for more than 3-4 months until succumbing to alcohol addiction, losing his job pretty much everytime that happens due to how long he hangs on his vodka, and when he's feeling desperate he could even drink aftershave lotions as a substitute for alcohol. It is not helped when various circumstances hinder my efforts to build up courage to take steps to put my life back on track. Needless to say I could vent about my life all day as well.
How the hell can you create a character as insane as Omega Tiger Woods and yet are giving the most eloquent goddamn answers of everyone thus far.
I'm a kind of a guy who generally likes to be eloquent. Sometimes I prefer to say certain on things only if I can do it eloquently.
-Do you have any theories as to why more of the English speaking community is more interested in Battle Monsters than the Japanese speaking ones?
-Any authors you look up to?
-Seen any Mugen things that may be weirder than your own works?
  • Beyond what can be basically summed up as the "David Haselhoff effect" I have no idea.
  • On the past I probably did look up to 3ha, Taruse, Warusaki3, Vans, Mass, NGI, GM, the PIIYM folks like XCB, ahuron and some other names that either escape me or I had second thoughts on whenever I'd include them. These days I barely pay much attention to what's going on, altho' I do occasionally find up gems there and there.
  • From what I can remember, GooGoo64's stuff probably rank up quite there. For all of his programming ineptitude this guy is certainly creative.
Does the public yet know the truth about MM?
At least that other mugen wiki knows about it. I'd certainly spread it around further as soon as I'd do this one thing I wanted to do this year but probably wouldn't be able to make it in 2014 after how it took me too long to get where I am currently at with Butt-Head.
Favorite Konami game?
Ever played Kabuki Quantum Fighter for the NES?
Who is the best Battle Monster character?
The hardest character you've ever made?
  • There are plenty of Konami stuff I have yet to actually get around (I do plan on rectifying that sooner or later tho') so as of right now I'd say the first Metal Gear Solid.
  • Being a guy who started out on an Amiga in around 1996 (which is pretty damn late for the platform, actually) till moving to the IBM PC in around 1999, I missed out on KQF. I've written it down for consideration tho'
  • Tough call with a cast that memorable, but I'd guess a certain undead mohawked skeleton dinosaur warrior would take the cake.
  • Characters that are toughest to beat (with how hard I usually do my AI it's hard to pick out a standout, I'd guess DBK, Shang Tsung and MissingNo. may be up there) or characters I've had the hardest time developing them? (I had a bit of a hard time fully thinking up the full moveset of MissigNo.'s and Butt-Head's which I'd guess partly contributed to why doing these took me much longer than I've anticipated, I at first hoped I could make it with MissingNo. for last year's April Fools after all. I remember having hard time seeking ideas for the Giygas  updates as well.)
How do you feel about mugen possibly being converted for android?
Personally I think mobile devices are kind of flawed platforms for gaming. Even when using my android tablet for general purposes I've noticed a bit of latency which makes it less than ideal for fighting games, and there's the matter of obscuring the screen with your fingers to do any input (unless a game would go for the approach of making the game view size smaller to make room for the input map). Well, I dunno I personally didn't game much in mobile so I'm not sure am I the most qualified to say on the subject. So I'd guess when one fancies watching real-time AI watch mode battles on a tablet....
Would you ever make anything from Hanna-Barbera, like Brak?
With my backlog of mugen stuff to do (including WIPs I've planned myself as well as collaborations) I cannot exactly guarantee when that would happen, but if Cartoon Network characters count (when it started out Cartoon Network was technically Hanna-Barbera & Looney Tunes : The TV Channel) then I certainly have considered doing Dexter and/or Johnny Bravo (fun fact: that Johnny Bravo sprite I did for Kazu's winpose certainly gave me an idea to make other cartoon characters in sprite based forms, starting out with Beavis)
actually are there any mugen projects that you never finished? 'cause you seem to be much better about actually getting them done *eventually* than some of us
Well there is this abandoned Ultimate Mugen Master Battle: Creator Melee project I was involved with and used to make pretty steady progress but then the HDD crash of 2006 happened and I had trouble getting myself motivated to work on since, and the rest of the crew apparently also lost interest. There were also two mugen fullgames I used to work on with a fellow Pole named Smogon (in both cases he provided the sprites, I did the coding), these being Cruel Fate (also affected by the HDD crash but his sprites survived in my mailbox) and WSMIP budokai, on which progress slowed down for me because at the time I sort of had doubts on whenever I'd ever feel satisfied with this project. It's been a while since I've been in contact with Smogon since and the last time I've heard of him his life was also a bit of a mess at the time.
And mildly related: My char folder has plenty of folders of would be characters of mine that have yet to actually have any mugen-usable files in them, if anything they either contain text files with move ideas, at least a single sprite (whenever it's finished would vary) if not zipfiles of spriterips. Such characters that can be technically described as "not yet even started making these characters" include: Dexter (so far a folder only includes few screencaps from the show, to be vector traced Beavis-style), a Terry who would cycle between spritesets of teh games he has been in (totally not unlike Time Flux Sonic), an Ougon Musou Kyaku character, a XIII Duolon (altho' something tells me someone may have already done a decent one), a new Dink Smallwood (so far just a text file with a tentative movelist), a female character I'd do after I'd be done with the Dink remake (also just a text file), Daraku Tenshi's Roche (been holding off because of how horrible Kong's rips were, good to know I found out a way to rip the sprites), ABK's Soldat (whose folder contains nothing lol, the spriterips are in a completely different place on my HDD) and a Vergil, whose folder contains a subfolder with lots of screencaps, soundrips, text files and a single unfinished sprite. Suffice to say Bugya has beaten me to a punch in more ways than one, no really his take came out quite like how I've imagined I'd do him, gotta give him to that.

Because I had to prepare myself for the appointment I'll answer JustAGuy92's and Balthazar's questions (the latter of which popped out while I've been writing this post) later.

I had a feeling it would come to me sooner or later, but never thought it would happen right now.
So anyway, as it's night down here (and it took me like two hours to write down these answers) I may as well answer a couple of these right now.
-What in the world gave you the inspiration to make segaloSegalow?
-Can you confirm that the lack of facial hair changes one's moveset for every character?
-DBK is op, whens nerf?
-When will we collab and make the most bizarre thing mugen will ever know?
  • Heh, I looks like get to start my session with a little bit of a history lesson. So anyway, as far as I remember it was probably a combination of boredom and an idea to take a piss out of this one guy named EvilSlayerX5. He was a guy who attempted to "experiment" with fighting game design by taking few characters (notably Rugal) into whatever hugely flawed playstyles he put them into, like a Kain Heinlein recolor whose special moves required a mana that has to be manually charged (and the guy had the audacity to call his stuff original when this kind of stuff was sort of done before as far as Art of Fighting). The way this guy reacted to criticism (from the playstyles, through move setups, even few aesthethic choices like the ugly looking hitsparks or palettes severly lacking in contrast) was legendary: he basically labeled his critics as being some kind of govermental/corporate sockpuppets out to get him, and his bias against both traditionally accepted fighting game conventions and ESPECIALLY fighting game companies was pretty well known. For all of his extremely smug attitude about how "original" his characters were, I decided it would be fun to try to prove him wrong by beating at one of his own games by taking a character (Rugal in this case), making a non-palette based aesthethic change to make him visually stand out among fellow Rugal edits (shaving his facial hair and giving him both healthy eyes in this case) and experimenting with the use of his pre-existing spritesets to make the most "unRugally" Rugal edit as I could. I'm not sure did ESX5 himself has ever taken a look at my effort, but whatever the case, for me it was worth it considering a number of tricks I've employed during the development of this character marked him as sort of a breakthrough.
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
  • Wait, more of these characters have surfaced? Pardon me but sometimes I am so out of the loop when it comes to what's going in Mugen that I never knew about that. All can I say about that is "depends on whenever the author is creative with the use of the pre-existing sprites".
  • As much mixed reactions DBK gives me these days, I have to admit that an update was in consideration. With one of his bigger imbalances being the overly versatile moveset, I've thought about basically splitting his moveset into two grooves, one groove having the Maherl Bomb, the D,D,button specials and the Taokaka drive and the other having the Maherl Bomb, Rising Grandpa, Bow Throw, Robert Garcia Kick and a completely different drive attack, and to this day I have yet to thought up an alternate drive attack for this one groove, which may have contributed to why I haven't gone around further working on the nerfs. As long as I somehow get an idea, maybe I'd give a long needed update that addresses a number of thing that should have been addressed. Provided I wouldn't sooner decide to just completely retool the entire character.
  • When I get better at cleaning up my mugen backlog and do this one original sprited character I'd like to do after Butt-Head, maybe I'd consider on that.
-Where do you get most of your ideas for Mugen?
-Tell me, what was 'SF3 Pablo' like?
  • Aside of boredom being a factor in few cases, I don't think I remember much about my thought process during the development of most of my characters to be able to adequately answer that question.
  • If you're refering to Ex-Inferis's first attempt at a SF3 character, ohhhhh boy.... I actually downloaded that character again (yes, Ex-Inferis's site is still active) to refreshen my memory, and man I may have disowned my own attempt at Alex but mine were at least sort of improvements compared to Inferis's. Stupid early-2000s-brazil-style chain combos (including stuff like being able to cancel from a Strongs/Forwards into Jabs/Shorts), sloppy hit velocities and general feeling of attacks, moves being at wrong speed, lousily ripped (and misused) sound effects, cropped sprites, weird commands/alterations for some of the moves (the power bombs were QCB+P, the air stampede being stupidly hard to pull off, the rising knee smash being a rising jumping light kick rather than an actual anti-air grapple), few of the moves were outright missing, everything about that character just felt wrong. I may as well let ShoShingo elaborate on this one.
If you could take a free trip to anywhere in the world where would you visit?
To be honest I don't quite know. Whenever I thought about moving away from my country to reside, I could never get any concise ideas for what country I'd exactly move in as apparently every country happens to have something in them (like in their law/politics/society) that makes it a bit less than ideal for me. One of the closest ideas I've ever had for that may probably be England's Sheffield, if only because as an aspiring game developer one of my (extremely unlikely, considering it involves an IP from a certain infamous company, who by the way isn't that known for giving away their IPs either) ideas being a game partly set there, and I'd hope I would take the opportunity to learn as much about that place's history as I could, then hopefully getting ideas of what of I'd learn would work well for at least a level or something.
How long it had taken you to process Beavis' sprite set the way you wanted?

Will Shadow Kouma get another updat with your current characters?
  • While I did my very first Beavis sprite around January of 2013, real work on Beavis's spriteset didn't start until around early November of 2013, and judging from the timestamps of my workfiles I've still been keeping, I've been working on the sprites up until December 21st (yes, I was even working on the sprites few hours before I firstly released the character). I hoped I would be around as fast with Butt-Head, but not only did various factors - most of which I had little control of - greatly impeded my motivation (which is a bit odd considering I don't remember my time during the development of Beavis being anything but rough), not to mention I started working on him much later than I initially planned (hoped to start him around Febuary, ended up making my first animation on june). By the way as of this post I'm so close with the completion of Butt-Head that I'm trying to focus on giving Beavis a sort of minor-ish update, but I'd rather not tell on when I'd exactly release these characters, my luck with keeping my personal deadlines that I've felt I only further jinx it everytime I promise anything :P
  • My motivational problems certainly contribute to my uncertainy on whenever I'd ever feel like giving Shadow Kouma an update, but I certainly considered that. Whenever that would happen around the time I'd feel like packing it quits and giving most of my characters like a 'final' update, or much earlier, at this point I'm not able to guarantee absolutely anything
1 question = How the Fuck could you Code you characters with that kind of Fucked up?
I barely remember how I've managed to progress as far as I did when it comes to coding, so the closest I have for an idea would involve referring to the engine's documentation a lot, thinking about for what extraordinary purposes can everything in the engine be used for, and I'd guess my programming background helps a lot as well.

Thoughts on Shaq Fu 2 without a doubt being based on your character, and I base this off of nothing?
I'd believe that theory more if only A Legend Reborn actually kept the versus fighter genre rather than apparently moving into the beat'em up territory. A bit of a shame, my Shaq would have certainly proven that another fighting game attempt that is just done right is possible, I dunno if Big Deez weren't that aware of my stuff or did they just not have confidence in themselves to make a good fighting game (considering there aren't much in a way of American companies that are actually competent with doing fighting games, I can't quite blame them.). Who knows, there's always a matter of how Shaq Fu 2 itself would perform on it's own and some of the things they boast about in previews do sound pretty promising, whenever they'd be able to execute them would be another matter (also I wouldn't mind if the tone would be more subtler).

Actually my real brother can't play much fighting games aside of Tekken to some extent, and frankly I am not that fond of the guy, but I don't feel like sharing any stories of him stooping to various new lows at the moment, I just wanted to make it absolutely sure (few would say in vain when it comes to few people but I digress).

I can vaguely recall a time when that Mugen wiki (which existed since 2005) used to have much better quality control than how things are now. And then things went downhill one day, possibly after jenngra505 got lucky that a wikia staff member offered him position to make him an admin of that wiki and he took the opportunity. No, seriously.

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

Also, I was holding off with the revelation until I'd get around completely remaking one of my earlier characters (I've hinted that a few times in various places, and I have yet to even complete my current WIP. I'm slowly getting to the half-way point when it comes to the sprites tho'), but now that the milk has been spilled, I may as well confess it now: Yes, through the 9 years I have been basically posing as my own "older brother". Prior to my "transformation" I was doing some pretty embarrassing stuff to the point that I felt the need to outright start anew, hence I even went as far as to ask Valodim to change my account name. Some people were fooled, few others saw through my disguise (The one time I've attempted to record myself in two different "voices", it was still pretty obvious that these would be recorded by this one lad that hummed a James Brown song).

I must say that the me from 9 years ago wouldn't have imagined that I would somehow progress as a mugen author (and more) as far as I did, therefore - as I've said before - I am deeply into completely remaking one of my earliest characters, moreso as 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of my presence in the Mugen community. "wow I feel old nanananananana" doesn't even begin to describe it.

-Idk if his supers are dependent on the meter he has himself, but maybe put some kind of "counter" on his meter? Reason why I ask is because it seems like he's still dependent on meter based on the lifebar (It's kind of hard for me to explain, but I always thought it'll act like "3rd Strike", in type of how the meter is used)
-Speaking of which, his meter kind of bugs out if you put it on full (Happens if I selected "G-boots").
It may not be the easier to tell with the bar's animation, but it does pulsate briefly when you have enough power to perform EX moves. And if you're refering to the counter that shows the current power level, then this is what the little green dot matrix display is for. (Which on the screenshot I've noticed it still has the tendency to be incorrectly drawn, but at this point I'm not quite sure how I would make it display much more reliably. The ontop explod parameter is a strange, untamable beast I have to rely on nonetheless. And one would argue I would have used a more clear typeface for the counter, and you may be right.)
-The "Fireball" special looks like he's shooting it out of his arm, even though he's shooting it out of his hands.
At least it's better than how BloodStorm itself did it (projectiles come from a character's center, and are drawn behind the character).

I have to admit, I was about to start a completely different project until I was distracted by the advent of easier ways to convert from BloodStorm, not like you would expct accuracy anyways. He's fleshed out with an ability to throw his head altering his style a bit, as well as the SF3-esque "chose your Lv.1 super".

I've promised more stuff to come along later this April, and now here it is! The much anticipated (well, judging from the amount of posts his WIP thread have received) take on Cogswell's secret weapon (modeled after it's appearance from the licensed NES game, spritework supplied by Balthazar and a number of other people that have contributed to the WIP thread) is now ready to make his opponents tear their hair out after he'd harass them with an arsenal of around 42 attacks. Obviously, Sentro is intended as a boss character.

But here's someone the me from few months ago would not have expected to work on, but I'd guess sometimes starting certain things really can be that fun. Going a bit against my desire to stick with custom sprited content, Viper from Survival Arts has been semi-accurately converted (I was aiming for something that would feel mostly like a bug-fixed version of the source) with few custom stuff thrown in for a good measure. By the by, he's also the first SA conversion to have mostly cleanly ripped samples from the source, to the surprise of anyone who thought that it was not possible to do that with the game's lack of sound test.

Grab them both at Logical Bends

I ran into a glitch where when he brings the chainsaw downwards, the enemy would fly backwards, but would still take damage.
Oh wow, can't believe I forgot to put in "p1facing = 1" and "p2facing = 1" parameters to that moves, hitdefs. Oh well, happens to everyone.

Also, I did the very first sprite of Beavis (which looks pretty much the same as the released character's idle stance, aside of the anti-aliased pupil) back in january this year, both as a graphics practice and to see if I can make at least decent looking cartoon characters by tracing them in vectors (remember that Johnny Bravo from one of Kazu's winposes? That was almost all vectors too). Then in around late october I vector traced other possible head angles, and full work on the spriteset didn't start until - indeed - early November. Mind you, raster graphics editing is still involved for finalizing the the look of the sprites (among things,  I omitted vectoring the upper torso as I opted to draw that later after rendering the vectors into bitmaps), nonetheless vectors - at least for simple artstyles with no shading - have proved to be effective time-savers, especially with animation.

- f+LP+LK performs Ball Breaker, whiloe I think it should rather perform Dodge.

Can't believe I've managed to make that kind of mistake, oh well, nobody's perfect (also, I fixed that and reuploaded the archive but I didn't change anything aside of fixing that and giving a bigger list of female characters Beavis would trigger is intro for, so you don't really have to download him again).

A small nitpick: I noticed that his Get Aggressive (I'm Cornholio) super had no super sound or super spark.  Was that intentional?
Yes. And the Idea I wanted to realize but was not able to do so in time (this can come up by the time I'd update Beavis though, and alongside that yes you may expect Butt-head as well, I just need a rest before proceeding with the latter) was an idea bulb in the place of the super spark, and I may be overthinking things but how one would exactly get ideas by drinking coffee

And to anyone wondering about the lack of Metallica logo on his shirt in the sprites: it's for the same reason why Ky Kiske and Sol Badguy don't have respectively "HOPE" and "FREE" written on their belts in their sprites, such tiny text would be impossible to make it look right on a 480p sprite.

Your eyes are not deceiving. I've somehow managed to improve a bit as a spriter, simplistic artstyle aside.
So anyway, being a guy who feels like moving on to producing originally sprited content, I chose everyone's favorite dumbass metalhead as a graphics practice. Early reports state that, few cut corners there and there aside, I've somehow managed to nail the Mike Judge artstyle, all with my prowess of tracing and vectors. Not like that would be a guarantee that I would churn out even better looking custom characters, but if I would, then my 2014 is certainly shaping to be interesting.

Get him here, and uh... Happy Double Holidays, I'd guess.... heh-heh.
