I've been playing with a few ideas when it comes to small portraits and portraits.
As much of the game's aspects are based upon Final Fight 3, I thought it would also be suitable to create small portraits (as well as big portraits) in Final Fight 3 style.


The top row are the original Final Fight 3 portraits - Haggar, Guy, Dean, Lucia (from left to right)
The bottom row are some portraits sprited by myself - Mess O'bradovich, Lancelot (from left to right)

Here's a little Lifebar mock up also.


Oh and might as well drop a teaser whilst I'm on the subject of spriting!

The problem is there's a general preference when it comes to mugen content, but in my opinion a creator should be creating for their own joy; not to please others. To gain an interest in any project or creations as a whole, you have to give patience.

But trust me you'll get bored a lot :laugh:

Ahaha yeah only where relevant though. So most velocities, sounds and animations are final, but gameplay opinions/ideas and bug reports would be strongly appreciated.

Lord have mercy, Kano is looking dope. I didn't even like the guy but the way they've made him utilise grappling and knife wielding attacks is beyond me.
I lost it when he broke Queen Bee's neck in that X-ray.

This is a pleasant surprise. One of my favorite aspects of Mugen is the freedom it allows you to have, especially with converting classic characters like this. Thanks for an awesome share. :lugoi:
Thank you! Yeah I totally agree. that's what initially got me in to mugen, the possibilities with characters from games such as these. Many people would rule these characters off as unfit for a fighting game as they don't require enough buttons or crouching attacks, but with a decent level of interpretation and spriting you can pull off some wonders.  :smitten:

Why is Chrome blocking the file?

I am pretty sure that this file's harmless.

Anyway, this looks like a good character. I'll download and test it tonight!

I have no idea, I use chrome myself and I didn't encounter that.
I just got the same notification. I'm gonna re-upload on mediafire, I think it's something to do with drop box.
I did a mcaffee scan on the file just in case and yeah it's clean so chrome's being a hater.

Very nice, like this classic touch! Love the "old school" grapple systeme!

Some feedback...

 - give his normal stance a sound everytime he bashes his fist
 - no taunt?
 - "Diving Double Boot" is very hard to do, attack needs a voice from Mess
 - Can´t do "Savage Back Breaker" (and I´m a "360 Zangief player"  ;D)
 - Is "Bomb Drop Combination" a anti air only? Cause I can´t hit a standing Mess with it...


 - "For Her..." needs a driving car sound too, not only the screeching of tires at the beginning
 - "For Her..." Desperation JOY can only be done once in a round?

+ His normal stance is accurate to Cadillacs & Dinosaurs so I'm going to keep it the way it was originally coded.

+ I've been brainstorming about adding taunts which give characters a special effect, might be added in a later version.

+ Diving Double Boot is accurate to the original game, it was always a difficult move to execute as it required strict jump height.

- I think the issue with Savage Back Breaker is it's an uncommon motion, the trick to it is executing the "DB,D,DF,F,UF" part not
  too fast and pressing the attack button as you hold up forward. I will probably change the command in an update.

+ Yes Bomb Drop Combination is anti air only, similar to Hugo's SA2 from 3rd Strike. The hit box is also based of Hugo's SA2.

+ "For Her..." is also accurate to the original game's driving scene. A driving sound is present as the car starts moving.
 Desperation JOYs can only be done once per game due to balancing. I didn't want players to be able to spam such a powerful move
 everytime they're losing the round with full bar.

Another low quality preview video, this time showing off some updates.
Character should be released early this week - And this time I mean it!

-Amended various moves to be even more accurate (e.g. hit number dependent on range).
-Added the after death intro from the original game.
-P1 and P2 icons coded.
-Afterimage has been updated, something more original.
-Flashes inspired by Final Fight 3 have been added to Super JOYs and Desperation JOY.
-New small portrait
-Win quotes and win portrait.
-Music cutting off after a Super K.O.
-Etc etc etc.

I was actually looking at that game the other day, I think it would be a cool idea adding some cameo stages even if characters wont be appearing.
Think that could be suitable!

Thanks, I tampered with it a little to give it a more comic book feel and will be using it on the character.


Also I updated the palette section on the first post with the current ones. Mess needs 2 more for anyone who wants to create some or drop ideas.

Also, for everyone who's interested in testing, I should be releasing a beta of Mess either at the end of this week or the start of next week.

-I've amended some general velocities and characteristics of moves making Mess more accurate to his Cadillacs & Dinosaurs rendition.
-Mess' Desperation JOY has been coded. It involves Mess summoning the notorious Cadillac via radio and driving it straight towards the opponent.
 The move can be delayed for a total of 40 ticks by holding the attack button.
-A few more palettes have been created.

Thank you! I have yet to visualize any ideas, I'll most likely be requesting some help on here soon for stuff like that; Screenpacks/lifebars have never been my forte. But it's definitely going to be following the retro aspect of the full game.

One thing I am sure of is the character portraits. All character portraits will be edited into Final Fight 3 style.
Previously Warner chipped in on 1 or 2 portraits. I might try to get back in contact with him to see if he can help with some sprite work when it comes to portraits, and maybe even some screen pack ideas when the time comes... That's if he's active, it's been 4 years since then.

Fundamentally, Mess is complate! Only damage values and balancing needs to be worked upon.

(The first quick swipe has great range and is pretty damn fast, good priority all round. Heavy Strike is rather sluggish though, unless it is combo'd into via Target Combo.)

-Emergency Retreat
(One of the only dodge maneuvers which hits the opponent as well as displaying invulnerability to most attacks. Although, the falling sequence can be punished with the right character.)

Weak Attack Cancelling
-Perform a command during the initial frames of the Weak Attack animation
(Taking inspiration from the original game I've decided to give Knights Of The Round characters the feature of being able to cancel their Weak Attack animations. By doing this, special moves (such as Cross Slash) will be given an increased x axis range.

Specials
Kick Attack

-U during the initial frames of Weak Attack
(A jumping kick which sends Lancelot into a retreating somersault jump on contact. An effective anti air in certain situations, and displays great priority on ground targets. However, this special can be easily punished if the attack makes contact to early during jump arc.

Cross Slash

-D, DF, F, x -Or- y
(A nimble travelling slash which is safe, from a distance, on the Weak Attack variant. The Strong Attack variant is not safe on block in all circumstances, but it displays juggling possibilities.)

Cross Slash JOY
-D, DF, F, x+y
(As well as having great horizontal distance, the JOY variation also leaps Lancelot into the air, making the start up of this move invulnerable to projectiles and crouching/low attacks. This move also has juggling potential.)

Super JOYs
Super JOY1 - Majesty
-B, F, DF, F, x -Or- y
(Idea)
~Lancelot goes into his defence state (Like the original Knights Of The Round's defence command) for 25 frames. If the opponent attacks with any other move than an Extra JOY, Super JOY or Throw then Lancelot will counter into a devastating slashing combo.

Super JOY2 - Accension
-D, DB, B, D, DB, B, x -Or- y
(Idea)
~Have a vague idea of Lancelot performing an accending combo similar to Gouki's SA3 in Street Fighter 3.

Gameplay
Lancelot packs an arsenal of quick attacks with great range, but in general he lacks damage output. His gameplay will rely on spacing and punishing with devestating Extra JOY Cancel juggles. I can't be certain for now, but I believe he will be one of the top characters of the roster.
