Where to start?

 Basically, I'm interested in making a character, but have absolutely no idea where, or how, to start. What art program should I use? I can't buy anything like Photoshop, so I only have MS Paint and Gimp, though I have no idea how to use it. I did download Fighter Factory as well. Any tips?

reading the docs plus looking at kfm's code get's you not only started but going as well
