I have 2 questions about MIDI files:

1) Is there a plugin that plays midi files as well as mp3 files?

2) If not, how can I convert midi files to mp3 with audacity? I thought i could just import the midi then export as mp3, but that didn't work. Any help?  ???

1.  It's not out of the realm of possibility but I don't see why anyone would go through the trouble of developing such a plugin when you can just have both.

2.  What do you mean by "didn't work"?  When you import into audacity you should have a raw audio stream that you can save as any format.  Can audacity not import midi files?

If so, I suggest you use Winamp and set the output plugin to the file writer to dump the audio as a WAV file, so you can convert that.
Not suggesting Winamp is the best choice, but it's pretty much guaranteed to work and easy to get.

When I import the MIDI file to Audacity, it looks like this:

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

The audio stream looks very different from the audio streams for other audio files. Anyway, I tried to export it like that as an MP3, but when i open up the mp3, it had nothing

well, i suppose i could try with winamp

Ah I see.  Audacity isn't making any conversions, it's showing you the MIDI file as is (basically sheet music, the instruments are provided by the software)
