hi,was wondering if anyone here was acquainted with the p2p service soulseek. it's a lightweight, no-malware client from years back which allows you to share just about anything on your hard drive and has customizable settings for who can download from you, etc.the reason i ask is because i think it'd be a great supplement to getting chars from websites as there aren't any hosting issues and people could swap chars and stages without have to chase broken links, etc. as far as knowing what you're getting, you could just download the readme file individually before you grab the whole character folder to see who made it, it's version etc.just a thought.
I use Soulseek for year, mainly for downloading music (for single songs as for entire albums) and I don't think you could find MUGEN chars using this program. Especially since Soulseek were made as one of the few clones of Napster...

you can get any kind of file off of soulseek, ex. if i download an album with a folder image in the directory, i get the image as well as the mp3s.whether or not it's like warehousing comes down to the user you're getting you're downloading from. if someone has an organized collection (thinking of .rars, etc with directory labelling) of non-junk chars up in their shared folder, grabbing them would be easier than chasing links. and if people reciprocate and organize their collections in a similar fashion you'd have a solid platform. but like i said, i'm thinking of it as a supplement. if anyone is interested, let me know and i can walk you through the setup if need be.
Soulseek has also something called warez, which is rather illegal.I use it once in a rare while but that's besides the point!
noted, but i don't see the relevance. it's an open p2p network (however, free from bundled spyware, etc.), it has whatever people put in their shared folders and allow people to download. the client software itself isn't illegal, and i'm not promoting anything of more questionable legality than what takes place here on a day-to-day basis.
If it has anything illegal it won't fly here.Plus it's basically the same thing as lolwarehousing combined with loltorrents.
all right, just didn't understand the policy, i suppose. apologies.although, by that token, theoretically AIM in a way falls into the same category as you can do p2p file transfers across it (unless they removed that functionality, its been a while since i've used it).
Even without the policy stuff... who would search MUGEN stuff in a p2p for music?? And who would add his MUGEN folder to a p2p for music??
well i wasn't proposing people go search on slsk for mugen characters. i was getting at using slsk as a means of giving people on the forum a way to freely exchange files without the hassles of hosting, that's all. this would be achieved without the search function, you just add a user to your userlist and then browse their files, and in this case you'd knowingly find mugen files.
respjrat said, May 15, 2010, 04:19:07 amblahYeah, that's an useful option to search in the files of the other user what you're searched. But in general everyone who uses Soulseek only indexed their music folders (or their video folders if you've luck), but not MUGEN. Remember we're a very few poblation in the world who plays (and most important, knows) about this engine.So... forget about using Soulseek for searching MUGEN stuff. At least I use it only for music as the 99% of the Soulseek users
i'm not seriously promoting it at this point as there's a conflict of interest with this forum, so i won't carry on with my arguments.
I see you don't read anything what I posted. It's not a conflict of interest, try to search MUGEN stuff by yourself in Soulseek and you wouldn't have success. So simple as that
i just think there's a communication problem herei'm not saying people should search on soulseek for anything mugen-related.i'm saying people with well organized collections, people presumably on this forum, can use soulseek as an open, neatly indexed and controllable way to share amongst themselves, regardless of whatever else is available on the network. instead of 'i will email you or link to this individual file' it becomes an open, seamless exchange.
OK, I understand your point now Yes, it is possible since Soulseek can read any format. But you've to look for someone who uses Soulseek AND plays MUGEN for the exchange. And that's the hard thing and why wouldn't work your idea

And that's the hard thing and why wouldn't work your ideaActually, I do both, and I've even considered at one point sharing some of the offline chars from my HDD through Soulseek, but I decided to scrap the idea because I thought there wouldn't be enough interest.Maybe once Mugen gets more widespread with newer and improved versions there would be more of a point in starting some kind of a Mugen hosting ring via Soulseek, but as for now I don't think there is any reason not to resort to the usual methods. About 95% of the decent offline stuff is still hanging somewhere out there anyway.
