Popoi, the playable Sprite character from the Square SNES ACTION-RPG, Secret of Mana!

I have a super long history with this game and it's one of the few that I could sit down and play any day of the week despite the fact that, honestly, it's not that mechanically impressive or really even that fun to play when compared to any other game. It's a huge nostalgia trip for me, and I've beaten it (or at least gotten pretty far in it, knowing my inability to persist through things) countless times, and everything about it just provides a really pleasant experience. The music, the stiff gameplay, the awkwardly translated dialogue~...

I mostly play the game with my cousin (man I bring him up a lot. we played a lot of games together as a kid!) and every time he would play as the main character and I would always play as this guy. There wasn't a lot of distinct differences that I know about aside from the fact that one is just better at melee combat and the other has offensive magic spells.

Even still, I don't really know what it is about this particular image that I like so much, but for some reason I just really do like it. So, that's my avatar! I know you didn't need all that information but FUCK IT.

At some point I have to mention Kurt Cobain. That character is horribly and strangely coded, the sprites are unbelievably awful looking, the voice sample choices are odd and random, and generally it is mechanically unorthodox. Nothing about this character makes sense to me and it is so amusingly odd that I love it.

Sad to say I don't honestly play MUGEN more than I make shit for it, so I don't honestly have, like, a favorite character to play as. I have fiddled with a good number of characters who I greatly enjoy, original or conversion, but honestly...



I kinda have to give that distinction to Yurika, considering its just my favorite combination of great original spritework, a good source to work from (because Rival Schools is a great thing I need to play more than once in my life) and a solid gameplay to boot.

FilmNStuff. That guy was an insufferable AVGN-Wannabe that went far and beyond by just flat-out being racist and incompetent. Which I guess doesn't really make him HILARIOUS but he was certainly the worst. The most hilarious was probably that guy who did the Shadow: War of Succession video because he was just a goof.

Man speaking of things I started but barely got close to finishing! Though, admittedly, the only reason I started Kaori was that my PC was broken at the time so I was using my laptop to do something simple, and last I checked only like her and Mephis had proper sprite rips. (And, yknow, Shaq)

I would probably have to look at their movelists a little more closely, but the design I think I like most is Colonel, so I'd probably pick him. I wouldn't mind finishing Kaori though. For some reason I can picture using Karman Cole's voice for Colonel. I'd probably use Coyori for Kaori because I'm a dumbass.

lol I dont. That's why I don't finish anything. Generally the only way I can get anything done is that I finish it within a week or else it'll just sink into the depths of my WIP trash bin.

I'm also under the impression that people keep neglecting data from the game, do you guys know how PotS made his original characters? He actually studied every single game he referenced, down to the core. Doing this properly requires understanding how the original system was made, not just winging it.

I assume you mean my "original" work. I donno, I've generally had a desire to design things from scratch all my life, and combined with my love for fighting games, it seems only natural. Most of my work just involves me doing whatever I can that I would have fun creating, and generally why they turn out the way they do is just that I want to create something that's fun to play while not putting too much thought or effort into actually trying to be witty or humorous. Essentially, I would just make original characters if I had the spritework for it and didn't feel too lame just sprite editing an existing character to be an OC or something.

I feel like I have a different answer for this question but I seriously cannot think of anything else but Damian Shade. Because, apparently only the mugen conversion of Bristol did this, but he could pick up Damian's corpse (from his intro) with his foot and toss him at people. And that's kind of amazing.

excluding videogames?? honestly not much. I can be a bit of a geek about music though. I'm not stuck up or anything (I'll readily admit most of the stuff i listen to is radio-rock garbage) but I do find myself at random points just sitting down and listening to music while literally doing nothing else but browsing my playlist. Said playlist is also neatly organized by genre and then by artist, I spend a lot of time retagging all my MP3s and making sure they have appropriate album art attributed to them. I don't keep a lot of music on my computer that I dont like a lot; i have a few video game soundtracks laying around, but among my rock playlist is a bunch of music that is each a song im incredibly familiar with the lyrics to and am capable of listening to it over and over, because otherwise it would have never ended up in my playlist if I didnt like the song A LOT at some point. So I can be very picky about what I listen to.

I guess I'm pretty geeky about music, now that I think about it!

Nintendo Wii. It's gimmick has always bothered the hell out of me, I found it an extremely lackluster console with terrible controller setup and a pretty small lineup of decent titles. The Virtual Console was a step in the right direction but it was again marred by bad controls, even when attempting to use a gamecube controller on an SNES game. Using Y to run and B to jump on a SNES controller was fine, but trying to use those controls on a GCN controller while playing, like, Donkey Kong Country? Fucking horrendous. All I can say about that is at least Secret of Mana allowed you to rebind all your controls!

I'm not exactly very excited about the Wii-U or the 3DS because they're both full of gimmicks I don't really understand, but they seem like much more usable consoles with already an already better selection of games. (The 3DS specifically is a fine console with a 3D gimmick that no one has to use so its just completely pointless. I mean its kinda neat looking for a little bit but I'm not under the impression anyone really wanted it or was sold on it based on that idea alone???)
