Are there any good examples of such a thing about?  Think....oh, C&C Ion Cannon, sort of thing.  A beam from the sky, hitting the ground.

Asking is easier than risking wasting hours hunting.

Can't you just use a horizantal beam and rotate it in Photoshop or whatever?

Possibly, but I can't think of many horizontal beams that look right when so twisted.  I'm after Ion Cannon sort of thing(That is, with a ground splash/wave effect so it looks like it's HITTING the ground), with enough length that it looks like it's coming properly from off-screen, regardless of height.
