as the title says. I'm trying to make a Maplestory styled sidescrolling RPG with my friend and we are looking for the right engine / programming language. So yeah. What do you recommend?

I just use RPG Maker VX for make RPG but it's non experience programming..  maybe, C++ for the best game programming IMO, but I'm not too skilled with C++ programming.. :'(

Well, I don't know if its the 'best' way, but for beginners, I suggest something like The Games Factory 2, (or better, Multimedia Fusion 2). You can basically script/program your own RPG with it if done right. But if you want to give TGF2 a try, you can DL it for free by getting the TGF2 Newgrounds edition. Very limited (more limited than MMF2), but least you'll be able to try the software and see if it's something you would be able to use to develop your RPG game. You can always upgrade to MMF2 later if you're really interested in this software series.

Though there are other things out there like RPG Maker that help with things like this, but I've never used it. There's also Game Maker, but I never liked its interface and the games made with it due to the slow FPS speed.
If you're an advanced programmer, things like C++, C# are probably better, since you are not quite as limited as programs like MMF2, RPG Maker, Game Maker.

I don't understand GameMaker and i can programm better in Java and C++ XD even though GameMaker is supposed to be "easy".

You can always try create a Flash-based game. ActionScript 2.0 is easy enough to meddle and ActionScript 3.0 is powerful enough for games with complex codes. And ActionScript 3.0 is OOP, just like Java.

Flash is web-based, and can use APIs like player.IO for multiplayer communication.
i think we should call it an "engine" so we don't look like total idiots because otherwise we'd be arguing about a "game" and that would be somehow "dumber" than arguing about an "engine" on the "internet" for countless hours
