this isn't the first time this happened, psychologists blame it on the "bystander effect", the more people that are watching a crime, the less responsible they feel towards doing something about it.

Maybe they were mexicans and reminisced the fact that if they stopped the rape in mexico they would be charged for criminal assault against the rapist (though it would still be ok if the cops did not get involved).

If you do something like that here, everyone in the neighborhood will make sure you're in a world of extreme pain you can't possibly live the rest of your life normally. Even just robbers get beaten to near death.

I've had a time where a theft was being performed down a street, and it took me a little while to realize that it wasn't just a bunch of middle/high school losers in the street having a loud conversation and that the thief was getting away. But rape ? I'd think you'd notice it...

They were driving by so they probably couldn't hear her scream and even if they did, they might not have been able to discern if it was a good or bad scream.

How do you not notice someone has a scissors to the persons throat (I would assume) and is being raped? O_o If bystanders don't wanna be involved pull out a cell phone and call 911. I mean how cowardly can you be?

We are hardwired to run from those situations where we are faced with strange ammounts of sex or whatever. We automatically get shamed or something.

It could very easily have been blocked from view and if you're in a moving vehicle, it could be very difficult to see anyway.

I have been on nearly every street in Toledo, at all times of the day and night.  I dont buy the bad neighborhood excuse.  I do know traffic moves fast in Toledo, dangerously fast and there arent as many stop lights as in other cities, so I suspect most people driving by had no idea what they were seeing.  The ones who did have no excuse for not calling 911.  As for that piece of trash with the scissors... karma.  karma will get him.

edit: the problem is sometimes it back fires: one of my friend experienced it once: he was walking in an empty street and witnessed a girl was being harrassed/chased (not raped but still getting REALLY harrassed)... so he tried to chase the guy (who ended up fleeing) and when he went to see the girl, she was nowhere to be found...then he was walking back home and a police car stopped: the girl was in the car and actually identified him as "one of the aggressors" (because she thought it was a scam to get her)...he ended up doing 48 hours in the police station, with a record that will last forever... true story! (Paris, quand tu nous tiens :beatnik: )

hah, in the slums in our country somebody who steal chicken could be torched to death by the mass.

there is road in my neighborhood which has an S corners, one day I ride my bike behind someone, and he suddenly fell on that corner without any reason, so I showed him how to take those corner properly, that's how I helped him.
