Can you explain 'Sprite ripping' please?

As my self-given title states, I don't know much at all, but wish to learn.

So, I have a game(Golden Axe:The Duel), the appropriate emulator(mame), and wish to get sprites for use with Mugen.

How to do it?  Is it a case of somehow taking umpty-billion screenshots with massive use of Pause(Assuming Pause exists) and somehow sorting them out?

Yeah, that's the idea. You pause the game and advance one frame before taking a pic, you advance again, etc.
Until you get all the sprites you need.

Of course, there are many things you can do to optimize the process.
You can use artmoney to remove all the background elements and effects, and get perfect axes rips.
You can use animget.
You could even extract the sprites directly from the ROM without an emulator, but that's another story.

Read tutorials about sprite ripping in the tuto section.

Kawaks is much more ideal for ripping as it can disable sprites, backgrounds, etc.

Artmoney for axis, infinite health, etc. (i don't know whether GA has a anim viewer activated by dipswitches which is used for ripping kof sprites)

A little late-I'd already gotten the latest version from Mame's website.  But it can't disable the backgrounds.

....Artmoney, Animget.  I see.

...This seems interesting.  Especially with dealing with his damm projectile.(Two parts-the thing itself, and a beam trail that's meant to tag along behind it.)

Any details you can give?

That's why you should get the version compiled by Satou Sei, since it can disable layers.

That requires advanced knowledge in programming, and I don't have this knowledge.

Even when having it, that is like walking when you can just take a free bus.

Is Artmoney capable of activating an animation(Or pieces of one), without activating things that are called up by that animation?

That bloody uppercut....both of them, actually.  One only activates at very close range(Bad for clean-up, as I'm not exactly good at it), the other gets a flame that covers half the sprite.  And his jump goes off-screen, he's so big, so I've only got one of three.

You'd think working with a guy with less than the standard amount of stuff would be easier-less to do, less to take.
