I started teaching myself how to play chess over the weekend...definintely nothing like checkers  ;P. So far I have the basics down (what piece moves where, learning Fool's Mate and other cheap-ass checkmates, etc). I'm downloading some vid tutorials so I can understand it better. Anyone else here play?

I used to play. Apparently I was never really good at it.

I used to play with my dad on Sundays, he'd always beat me of course. Then when I grew up I played against a younger cousin and then HE beat my ass. I kinda quit after that, because you know, there's MUGEN and Playstation.

Knowing me I'll probably be playing chess by myself at home (only know one friend who plays and he works a lot). One silly-ass question: If a white pawn moves up a space, and the black one moves one so that both of them are facing each other, can the white pawn claim the black one? I'm asking because I though pawns could only capture diagonally.

No, if pawns are facing each other, they'll just continue to stay there until one of them is "captured".

if two pawns are facing each other you create a paradox and have to play basket ball instead...

i will try and search for that chess gaming service, maybe we can set up some matches there. iirc, it allows you to set a chess session and you can move whenever you have free time, so a game can take from a few minutes to weeks;it emails you when it's your turn.

I always thought of it like SamSho's Button Mashing minigame that makes you lose your weapon.

  • I made it up for a videogame.
I know of Chess.
I have played Chess.
I have gotten a game over on Chess.
And that is why I hate Xbox.

Oh, you mean chess? Yeah, I've played it. I even have a book on it, for some reason. I now know how to write down accurately what happens in a chess match using square numbers. :smart:

Chess is good. Teaches you to think ahead, and of consequences.

I used to play chess quite some time when I was in High-School.
Don't have time anymore, and most people I know don't play it anyway.

Last time I played was one yer ago in my plane to go to Japan... I smashed 3 friends. :sugoi:
I'm not very good, but well, I'm not so bad either. ^_^

I learned the basics of Shogi in Japan, that's hell of a nice game too. :)

Either I don't understand the question, or it is very simple - the pawn moved out of the way of the queen which leaves the king in check

I was being too preoccupied with my other pieces and forgot about the queen. Why?  :S Case of temporary dumbshits?

Anyway, I'm getting slightly better. Played for about 4 hrs last night. My first victory owned the black king with two queens and a bishop  8)
