Hey everyone, so while I'm in the planning and organizational stages of Jango's Mario, I went back to updating CM Punk's sprites to his more recent look (short hair/beard/chest tattoos). When CVSNB finishes his new Jin sprites, I'll be making a new Jin for the game, but the old one will remain as a bonus "EX" character, and I figured I'd do the same thing with Punk. However, the new Jin will have a very different moveset, so i think I'll update Punk's moveset as well to further differentiate him from the older version, though it won't be as different as the two Jins.

Here are some screenshots of him so far ( more in the spoiler):

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

***PLEASE READ***

Now, I'm a HUGE Punk fan, but I'm looking for input from other Punk and/or wrestling fans and what I could add/change that would make him feel different, but still be true to Punk. Here's what I have so far:

UNIQUE TACTIC

-Evasive Roll - S Button
-A KoF-style roll. Has a forward and backward version, invincible to everything but throws.

COMMAND MOVES

-Spinning Backfist - F+HP
    -Same as the old version.

-???? - New command move here - Looking for suggestions. Backfist is an overhead, but doesn't really look like one. Maybe this move could be a more traditional overhead and the backfist could just act as a longer ranged normal.

SPECIAL MOVES

-Shining Wizard Combination - QCF+K
-This move is a huge Punk signature and a lynch pin for the old version's offense. I considered giving punk a Guy/Maki-style running special, with a bunch of follow-up options (Shining Wizard/Bulldog, Suicide Dive, Dropkick, maybe a Low Dropkick/Baseball Slide, etc.) but I was worried it might be overkill since Blaze already has a special that works like that and the game probably doesn't need two characters on The World side who have such similar specials. Looking for opinions on this.

-New Command Grab - HCB+P
-The Go To Sleep (GTS) would be reserved for supers since it's his finisher. I figure he does enough moves in real life that I could come up with a new command grab for his special move. Ideas? I was thinking maybe a Falcon Arrow, but he hardly does it anymore, and I'd prefer something representative of his more recent repertoire.

-Punker Rising Knee - DP+K
-Same as the old version, his anti-air.

-New Attack Special - ??? (command is open)
-Something to take the place of Punker Combination since he doesn't do it much anymore. Something similar would work, or something new that serves a similar purpose (mid-range attack special that's good for/in combos).

-Anaconda Vise  - QCB+K
-Same Counter Specials as the old version.

    -OR-

-Something Completely New to Replace his Counters - ???
-I got some complaints about the counters in the old version and I feel like I sometimes rely on counter specials too much to pad out movesets. Should I keep them? Or do something new? If I get rid of them, does he need something to replace them or would he be fine with a smaller moveset? Looking for opinions.

SUPER MOVES

L1 - GTS - HCB+S
-Same as the old version, except it's not called "Super GTS" because he no longer has the special move version.

L1 - Straightedge Savior - QCF+S
-Same as the old version, good standard L1 that I don't want to get rid of unless I come up with a really good idea to replace it.

L3 - Best in the World! - DP+S
-New L3. Punk does the running Shining Wizard and a short bulldog, then leaps off screen and returns atop a wrestling ring turnbuckle (ala R. Mika in SFA3). He then does a huge Randy Savage Elbow on his opponent, complete with slo-mo.

----------------

That's what I have right now. Any ideas? Suggestions? Discuss.

I think you should keep the counter.  If you want to differentiate it, make it work like Blue Mary's counter, where it's a followup to a command dodge.  Punk's mixup/grab based gameplay actually reminds me of a lot of Mary to begin with.

I would leave the shining wizard/bulldog alone.  It's fine how it is.

If you want to replace the command grab, I have a suggestion that would make up for the loss of his combination special AND strengthen his defensive and pressure games.  Clark in KOFXIII and Kanji in Persona 4 Arena have two versions of their command grabs, one which is a fast, typical grab and the other which has a moment of invincibility but is less safe on whiff.  Look up some videos if you need further elaboration.

If you want an overhead normal, hasn't Punk done a Mongolian chop lately?  I swear he's been doing it since his heel turn but it's a bit hard to remember.

Good ideas for the Command Grab, I'll definitely do that. I'd still like to come up with another attack special though.

As for the Mongolian Chop, he has definitely been doing that recently, though I wouldn't begin to know how to animate one without a base. Maxima does a Mongolian Chop but it's completely different from the one Punk does. I'll look into it and see if I can manage it, I'm shite at original animations.

I do think the counters should be removed or changed. If removed I would go with adding a move that has special properties like a stun or something more unique. Though I know pretty much everyone who will reply in thread will probably want the counter back I honestly think he'll be better off without it. If it does return then make base the counter properties off of SF4. It's fine giving him tools but there is such thing as too much

He already lost the combination which let him create ambiguous high low mixups, removing the counter would just be overkill and destroy his defensive game.  I suggested making it function more like Mary's counter which I think works a lot better because it means you can't blindly throw it out which balances out the damaging hard knockdown/oki situation it creates.

This so-called "defensive game" isn't really a factor, because to punish he already has an effective AA (Which may benefit from taking less frames to start up if the counter is removed.) and a command grab, which is all he really needs, and I don't feel that the counter complements his fighting style ANYWAY. If the counter was changed then that's fine but I don't think it's in the best interests of CvTW anyway.

Ooh, now he's looking cool.  Now, are the alternate Jin and this CM Punk gonna be on the main rouster, or are they gonna be outside of it?

Wow, I definitely didn't expect you to change him that much, will be looking forward to making more colours for him too :D...I may as well make those palettes for the old Punk too I guess, if he's going to still be in as some sort of EX character. Actually the interesting thing in this is (despite his current role) the old Punk could be used as a more "evil" version of him since he represented mostly his heel character, and this new one can be more representative of his time as a face.

So if you were looking for ideas, maybe that's one way of differentiating victory quotes/poses/etc. Maybe for the old version add maybe a few dirty moves to fit the character type, or a few stolen moves.

Maybe rather than the dodge roll, his tactic could be the mongolian chop, which would create some decent hitstun, or crumple state depending on your thoughts. Also if this new punk wins, you should give him a pinning animation, where he celebrates with his belt or something.

Is he going to have his current theme music now?

Yeah, he'll have his current music. If I add the Mongolian Chop it will be a command normal, I don't really want to change his UT. I just watched that same video about 2 hours ago, and all I really saw that would work in Mugen is Falcon Arrow, so I'm leaning towards that again even though he hasn't done it in a while. Maybe Tilt-a-Whirl Backbreaker, but I don't think that will have enough impact for a Special.

I like #2 in that video as an air counter special.

Yeah a lot of the grabs he does would probably require custom states for them, so I don't blame you for looking past some of them. I can't say I recall too much different, but maybe this whole face/heel thing might be a good point to start, were there any moves he started using after the turn? I can't remember myself, but if there was anything that's achievable that's an idea at least. Hmm....I'm just brainstorming, I think the dodge roll is a good fit too, but I'm just wondering what other possibilities there could be, maybe like an irish whip?

Or...hmm have you ever tried out any of Descolors' Slam Masters characters? maybe that may help for ideas. Maybe rather than his UT being the dodge roll he can have something like what they have for their "grab" button, where pressing it once is a hold (releases after some time) and pressing the button again + a direction gives you a different grab, forward/back + grab is always an irish whip.

I hate the AI on them, but it may help for more ideas at least.

Nah, sorry, it's a standard Capcom Special Move command for grabs. It's either that or a 360, which I'm sure is harder on a keyboard. I have updated it to remove the DF and DB parts from the actual command like all the half circles on my newer characters, which should make it easier to do on a keyboard.

If anyone could help find some good, clear, usable voice clips of Punk it'd be really awesome. I'm trolling Youtube looking for some stuff, more specifically, a good clip of him shouting "Best in the World," and I'm having no luck.
