It's barely distinguishable from the regular text if it's even a different color.

Maybe that's the point. The varying colors kinda promote different ranks, and thus lead to elitism (maybe). I think it's a cool, subtle idea that could have a big impact.

I agree the first color for contributor was too shiny. But this one is way too opaque.

I think it was supposed to be #8000FF but is way darker than that.
