When creating custom sprites, which format is best?
Bmp or Png?

  • *something witty yeah*
Png. But if you are doing individual sprites themselves (not a sprite sheet) then Gif is best.

Bmp is a filesize-hog.

Makes no difference whatsoever these days. You still have to convert them to a mugen usable format afterwards.

In M.U.G.E.N there is no magic button

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.

If by any chance you're going to use Paint Shop Pro then I would avoid PNG as it always scrambles the palette order when it saves. Use PCX instead as it's a smaller file size than BMP.

You should have options for when saving a .PNG, click the word ""Options"", you should then see 2 boxes, one of them reading ""Interlacing"", the other one  reading ""File Size Optimization""

The interlacing is not the problem, the file size optimization, is, by default it's set to ""Optimized Palette"", which basically means ""create a new palette order from start to finish using only the colors on the image itself"" [ This saves memory ]

You need to set it to ""Nonoptimized Palette"", which means ""leave mah palette the fuck alone n' just save mah image, bitch >:"" [ lol ]

Hmm... I know what you're referring to, but it no longer asks me that when I save pngs. I may have to go into the options to change that. Thanks for letting me know that.

Unrelated side note: The good thing about the optimization option is that it's a life saver for indexing images that don't share colors. For instance if you make a 9000,1 portrait as long as the top portion has at least one solid line of pink (background color) when it's saved the pink will automatically be set to pal# 0. This is VERY useful when one needs to convert a lot of unique images (like a 3D stage for example).

Odds are you're using a much newer version than I am anyways [ I'm still using 7 ] so probly, and yw
