From the makers of The Walking Dead! A new graphical adventure game, based on the famous comic series! It's The Wolf Among Us!

What is Fables?
Fables is a multiple Eisner award winning comic book by Bill Willingham, about various characters from fairy tales, myths, folklore, and so on, who have been forced out of their homelands by the mysterious "Adversary", who has conquered the realms of storybooks, from Oz to Wonderland, and have hidden themselves here, in our mundane world.

Do I need to read Fables to play this game?
Not at all! Though it serves as a prequel to the comics, this game will be completely stand-alone. However, I strongly urge you to read the comics! Because they're really good! And look at how many awards its won!!!

Hey the premise sounds a lot like that Once Upon A Time show-
Shush. This is better, and came first.

I'm sorry for being lame. :(

Considering Telltale's past games, how much does it play like The Walking Dead, or to a lesser extent, their previous point-and-click games?  Still some lagging and other bugs?

Coincidentally, I came across a set of comics mixed in with some Shakespeare a couple days ago, oddly enough...among then being some Fables.  Overall story looks fairly interesting.  This prequel, does it answers questions left from the comic or something?  Or just some completely new and irrelevant story that just takes place beforehand?  I've noticed already from one of the comics that it's been years since Bigby was a wolf, but the trailer here shows he turns into one, so it has to take place quite some time before the beginning of the comics.

Plays like TWD pretty much. Didn't run into any graphical bugs but IIRC there were several in the 360 version for TWD so it might be the case here too.

It's hard to judge just from one episode but nothing really pressing from the comics is explained or anything, it's very much a self-contained prequel.

well...
Spoiler: this is a really, really minor spoiler that is really just background information and not a "reveal" or anything, but might as well spoil it (click to see content)

Also I beat it and it was great and oh my god that cliffhanger and oh god when is the next episode coming out aaaaa

Alright, I guess I can jump in here!

I'm sorry for being lame. :(
Well I was lame about a month before this game came out, so I guess that's not too bad.

Considering Telltale's past games, how much does it play like The Walking Dead, or to a lesser extent, their previous point-and-click games?  Still some lagging and other bugs?
A lot like it. If you're familiar with TWD you'll get it. It feels a lot more refined than TWD though, and the choices feel like they carry more weight. As far as lagging and graphical bugs, I got it for the "NEXT TIME ON THE WOLF AMONG US" trailer, but it was a one-time instance and is probably from my computer (it freaked out when I tried to play Ducktales: Remastered on it, and it messes up on KOFXIII every now and then, although my mainstays like Killing Floor and Skullgirls run fine on it).

It's a prequel, and so you don't have to read the comics although you might appreciate it more if you do. I will say that reading the comics took the edge off of one particular plot twist, but it's still good.

And now for the spoiler stuff

Okay, I finally got it.  You can stop shooting me those nasty looks now, Morph-Man.

I'm liking it a lot so far.  Although, it doesn't quite feel the same as The Walking Dead.  I think it's because TWD had wholly original characters while this one has established ones.  When I come up to the dialogue choices I found myself asking "what would Bigby say/do" as opposed to "how should I react to this."  I don't know if that's a good thing for a game so heavily predicated on player choice, but I suppose we'll find out as the episodes roll in.

And now for the part everyone really wants to talk about:

This fucking game, OMG.

Finished playing EP1. I'm officially hooked. The aesthetics, the considerably more dynamic plot of this game when compared to The Walking Dead's snail-like pace. The characters.

Count me in for Ep. 2 guys. Get hype.

Wolf Among Us updated today with a 4.3 MB patch of... something.

Also release date is set for the first week of February, citing delays in finishing the episode.

If you don't want to click that link, though...

Quote
Hey everyone!

We were planning the announcement of the ep2 release date just today, and I really wanted to respond to the reddit thread, since the info was imminent anyways. But, we also wanted to make sure that everyone here was the first to know, so here it is!

First week of Feburary!

It's been a struggle to get this episode out, for a variety of reasons, but it's finally ready to go, and you heard it here first!

Here's what I'll be posting to reddit in a few minutes...

“Hey guys,

Kevin from Telltale here! Funny that this came up today, as we were planning the announcement of Ep 2, but… no time like the present!

Ep 2 should be available the first week of February. We are working hard with all of our partners (Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Apple) to coordinate everything, but we’re confident enough to announce that here. The episode is looking really good (as is the rest of the season!). We are very concerned about the long delay for this episode, but this is one of those occasions where several things conspired against us (not to mention the additional delays due to the holidays). I won't dive into the details, but it’s been an unusual and specific set of circumstances and we do not anticipate it happening again as we go forward with the rest of the season.

So there you have it. First week of February! “

So for you guys, how does this game fares when compared to The Walking Dead?

Is it better, the same, worse than TWD?

I don't know if it's really fair to compare the two yet.  I think TWAU needs a few more episodes under its belt before we can really make that call, because there's a LOT more Walking Dead right now.

I will say this though.

This game has a ver interesting art direction that is captivating to me even more than TWD. Also, I feel like in this plot there's much more at stake. In TWD it's all gone to shit, and it's all about kill or be killed, death is a constant to the point it's almost even not relevant. In TWAU, you need to take on the role of sheriff and try to keep things normal.

Lee is a very likeable character, but Bigby's crusade to earn people's trust is more relatable IMO. I'm really hooked.

I can't say anything vis-à-vis quality simply because it's too early, but it's already clear that the two are very different experiences just from the player character. Bigby is an established character who has 100+ issues worth of characterization already built up, which means that people who have read some or all of the comics will usually have a pretty good idea about what Bigby might choose to do. Lee is pretty much a blank slate.

But even then, I think one would still get a sense that playing as Bigby and playing as Lee are very different experiences, because Bigby already has a history with everyone in the game, and Lee is just meeting everyone for the first time. There's a sense that you can shape Lee's character in a way that you can't with Bigby; neither one is necessarily better or worse, it's just great to experience both.

Well, you gotta admit that not necessarily all gamers with access to a console are necessarily comic book nerds, let alone obscure ones. I was asking about the game (chapter 1 only so far?) itself, as a self-contained experience.

Bigby being an established character is irrelevant here. I replayed Ch.1 and made all "benevolent" choices, and every relevant character interaction plays out COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, meaning that his relationships with the character, well established or not, are overwritten by the plot of this game.

That's not the point though.  What he's trying to say is that people who are familiar with the characters may feel like their choices become hindered by what they already know about them.  That was certainly the case when I played it;  I based a lot of my choices around how I felt the Bigby I was already familiar with would act.  You can't discount the game's ability to present choices to the player when judging it, because that's at least a good 90% of what makes up the game.  Beyond that, the only other things there are to say is that the tone is more action-oriented and the UI is a little smoother than Walking Dead, and that's really not enough criteria to do either game justice.
