From the makers of The Walking Dead! A new graphical adventure game, based on the famous comic series! It's The Wolf Among Us!

What is Fables?
Fables is a multiple Eisner award winning comic book by Bill Willingham, about various characters from fairy tales, myths, folklore, and so on, who have been forced out of their homelands by the mysterious "Adversary", who has conquered the realms of storybooks, from Oz to Wonderland, and have hidden themselves here, in our mundane world.

Do I need to read Fables to play this game?
Not at all! Though it serves as a prequel to the comics, this game will be completely stand-alone. However, I strongly urge you to read the comics! Because they're really good! And look at how many awards its won!!!

Hey the premise sounds a lot like that Once Upon A Time show-
Shush. This is better, and came first.

alright I'm gonna go play it now and we can all talk about what choices we made and stuff and by we I mean me Person Man and Jango because the rest of this forum IS TOTALLY LAME

I'm sorry for being lame. :(

Considering Telltale's past games, how much does it play like The Walking Dead, or to a lesser extent, their previous point-and-click games?  Still some lagging and other bugs?

Coincidentally, I came across a set of comics mixed in with some Shakespeare a couple days ago, oddly enough...among then being some Fables.  Overall story looks fairly interesting.  This prequel, does it answers questions left from the comic or something?  Or just some completely new and irrelevant story that just takes place beforehand?  I've noticed already from one of the comics that it's been years since Bigby was a wolf, but the trailer here shows he turns into one, so it has to take place quite some time before the beginning of the comics.

Plays like TWD pretty much. Didn't run into any graphical bugs but IIRC there were several in the 360 version for TWD so it might be the case here too.

It's hard to judge just from one episode but nothing really pressing from the comics is explained or anything, it's very much a self-contained prequel.

I've noticed already from one of the comics that it's been years since Bigby was a wolf, but the trailer here shows he turns into one, so it has to take place quite some time before the beginning of the comics.
well...
Spoiler: this is a really, really minor spoiler that is really just background information and not a "reveal" or anything, but might as well spoil it (click to see content)

Also I beat it and it was great and oh my god that cliffhanger and oh god when is the next episode coming out aaaaa

Alright, I guess I can jump in here!

I'm sorry for being lame. :(
Well I was lame about a month before this game came out, so I guess that's not too bad.

Considering Telltale's past games, how much does it play like The Walking Dead, or to a lesser extent, their previous point-and-click games?  Still some lagging and other bugs?
A lot like it. If you're familiar with TWD you'll get it. It feels a lot more refined than TWD though, and the choices feel like they carry more weight. As far as lagging and graphical bugs, I got it for the "NEXT TIME ON THE WOLF AMONG US" trailer, but it was a one-time instance and is probably from my computer (it freaked out when I tried to play Ducktales: Remastered on it, and it messes up on KOFXIII every now and then, although my mainstays like Killing Floor and Skullgirls run fine on it).

It's a prequel, and so you don't have to read the comics although you might appreciate it more if you do. I will say that reading the comics took the edge off of one particular plot twist, but it's still good.

And now for the spoiler stuff

Okay, I finally got it.  You can stop shooting me those nasty looks now, Morph-Man.

I'm liking it a lot so far.  Although, it doesn't quite feel the same as The Walking Dead.  I think it's because TWD had wholly original characters while this one has established ones.  When I come up to the dialogue choices I found myself asking "what would Bigby say/do" as opposed to "how should I react to this."  I don't know if that's a good thing for a game so heavily predicated on player choice, but I suppose we'll find out as the episodes roll in.

And now for the part everyone really wants to talk about:

Finished playing EP1. I'm officially hooked. The aesthetics, the considerably more dynamic plot of this game when compared to The Walking Dead's snail-like pace. The characters.

Count me in for Ep. 2 guys. Get hype.

Wolf Among Us updated today with a 4.3 MB patch of... something.

Also release date is set for the first week of February, citing delays in finishing the episode.

If you don't want to click that link, though...

Quote
Hey everyone!

We were planning the announcement of the ep2 release date just today, and I really wanted to respond to the reddit thread, since the info was imminent anyways. But, we also wanted to make sure that everyone here was the first to know, so here it is!

First week of Feburary!

It's been a struggle to get this episode out, for a variety of reasons, but it's finally ready to go, and you heard it here first!

Here's what I'll be posting to reddit in a few minutes...

“Hey guys,

Kevin from Telltale here! Funny that this came up today, as we were planning the announcement of Ep 2, but… no time like the present!

Ep 2 should be available the first week of February. We are working hard with all of our partners (Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Apple) to coordinate everything, but we’re confident enough to announce that here. The episode is looking really good (as is the rest of the season!). We are very concerned about the long delay for this episode, but this is one of those occasions where several things conspired against us (not to mention the additional delays due to the holidays). I won't dive into the details, but it’s been an unusual and specific set of circumstances and we do not anticipate it happening again as we go forward with the rest of the season.

So there you have it. First week of February! “

So for you guys, how does this game fares when compared to The Walking Dead?

Is it better, the same, worse than TWD?

I don't know if it's really fair to compare the two yet.  I think TWAU needs a few more episodes under its belt before we can really make that call, because there's a LOT more Walking Dead right now.

I will say this though.

This game has a ver interesting art direction that is captivating to me even more than TWD. Also, I feel like in this plot there's much more at stake. In TWD it's all gone to shit, and it's all about kill or be killed, death is a constant to the point it's almost even not relevant. In TWAU, you need to take on the role of sheriff and try to keep things normal.

Lee is a very likeable character, but Bigby's crusade to earn people's trust is more relatable IMO. I'm really hooked.

I can't say anything vis-à-vis quality simply because it's too early, but it's already clear that the two are very different experiences just from the player character. Bigby is an established character who has 100+ issues worth of characterization already built up, which means that people who have read some or all of the comics will usually have a pretty good idea about what Bigby might choose to do. Lee is pretty much a blank slate.

But even then, I think one would still get a sense that playing as Bigby and playing as Lee are very different experiences, because Bigby already has a history with everyone in the game, and Lee is just meeting everyone for the first time. There's a sense that you can shape Lee's character in a way that you can't with Bigby; neither one is necessarily better or worse, it's just great to experience both.

Well, you gotta admit that not necessarily all gamers with access to a console are necessarily comic book nerds, let alone obscure ones. I was asking about the game (chapter 1 only so far?) itself, as a self-contained experience.

Bigby being an established character is irrelevant here. I replayed Ch.1 and made all "benevolent" choices, and every relevant character interaction plays out COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, meaning that his relationships with the character, well established or not, are overwritten by the plot of this game.

That's not the point though.  What he's trying to say is that people who are familiar with the characters may feel like their choices become hindered by what they already know about them.  That was certainly the case when I played it;  I based a lot of my choices around how I felt the Bigby I was already familiar with would act.  You can't discount the game's ability to present choices to the player when judging it, because that's at least a good 90% of what makes up the game.  Beyond that, the only other things there are to say is that the tone is more action-oriented and the UI is a little smoother than Walking Dead, and that's really not enough criteria to do either game justice.

Yeah, uh, I was just speaking from personal experience in the first paragraph. The whole point of that second paragraph was specifically about people who are coming into the game fresh, without reading the comics. And several people I've spoken to have said that they felt the experience was slightly different, even without having read the comics, if only because Bigby has to overcome preconceptions of him from the get-go.

I have also replayed the game, and chose the different options, and I still got the same feeling. If you're super nice, people will be surprised BECAUSE their expectations of Bigby differ from how he's acting. If you're super dickish, people's worst fears of Bigby are confirmed. And if you're in the middle, it's a little of both.

Well, you gotta admit that not necessarily all gamers with access to a console are necessarily comic book nerds, let alone obscure ones.
It's a wildly successful comic that's won a ton of awards. It has about the same amount of popularity as The Walking Dead did, pre-show.

Which, since it's a comic book, is not really all that much, but the fact remains that it's not at all an obscure title and one of the more popular ones.

Was there a list of major choices like usual for you, or are you just summarizing?  Because I just finished playing through it and never showed me what my choices were, even on the 'Choices' submenu from the title screen.  I just assumed that it didn't have one because this episode didn't have any huge "this or that" moments like the previous one did.

Nope

Also is anyone else a bit weirded out that most of the scenes showed in the NEXT TIME ON THE WOLF AMONG US after Episode I aren't in this episode? I have two theories:

1) Those events are in later episodes. Which is weird but okay.
2) They had to overhaul the entire storyline after doing the trailer. Would explain the (self-admitted) massive delay.

YES! Thanks to the kind sir The DMK I finally got around to playing Episode 2

Like 80% of the players, I went the BIG GOOD WOLF way. This game is just captivating. Everything about it is, the presentation, the music, the plot, the acting, the boobies. Amazing.

Need a second playthrough with all NASTY decisions, to see if I run into Gren with bandages on the arms or something.

Alright, so there's nothing new about Wolf Among Us, but there's been some discussion regarding the 4-month delay between episode one and two, why there were a ton of scenes in the preview not present here, and why episode two felt rushed and short. Some people are blaming it on the possibility that Telltale dropped too many hints as to who the killer (or at least a major player involved in the murder) was in Episode 1, and had to rewrite the entire plot from what was originally planned.

If you don't want to click that link but are still curious as to what's being discussed there:

Spoiler: If you somehow didn't read that last sentence and don't want to be spoiled as to what could've been a big plot reveal, or possibly still is and Telltale was just being really slow for some other reason (click to see content)

I really hope Telltale releases a physical special edition at some point with commentaries and behind the scenes stuff, because it would be fascinating to read when the series is over.

Well it was a "theory," not really a "this is what really happened," so I didn't think it counted. But I went ahead and edited it anyway. Ya big lug.

Interesting theory, although the episode 3 title is actually a reference to another nursery rhyme, There was a Crooked Man.

There was a crooked man and he walked a crooked mile,
He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile.
He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse.
And they all lived together in a little crooked house.

Beauty mentioned the Crooked Man as the one she owed money to in episode 2, so chances are he's a completely separate character.  Besides, after the first Walking Dead I have enough faith in Telltale's team that they wouldn't give the ending away so obviously in the very first episode.

Oh yeah, remember earlier in the thread when I was talking about the conspiracy theory that Telltale had to rewrite the entire story after the first episode due to somebody figuring out who the murderer was too quickly? Well, after doing some research, I found something that we probably didn't notice when we were playing the games.

Boring?  How the hell was this boring?  This one had a lot of tension building up in it.  Yeah, it wasn't as action-oriented as the previous episodes, but it's the calm before the storm.  Shit is definitely about to go down in the final episode.  At any rate:

Woah lots of spoilers.

Spoiler: Oh hey look even more spoilers (click to see content)

Spoiler: All in all (click to see content)

So maybe you might be saying "But Jango, the morality choices are the puzzle!" Wrong. While I haven't replayed everything with different choices each time, I find that most of my choices didn't really change much in the long run. Hell, I interrogated both the Woodsman and Tweedle Dee, and outside of some minor dialogue, the results were the same regardless of who I brought in. And while that's understandable when you're working on a small scale and you don't want to make a huge fucking game, it also means that in the end, it removes me as a player and leaves me as a spectator.

That's what they call the illusion of choice.  Make the player feel like they've made a big, meaningful decision when really they're still following the path that's been laid out for them.  It's a really useful tool for creating immersion without having to build an unreasonably huge game, but like you said it does lose its effect once the player notices that it's happening.

No, no sequel news, but I had to bump this! There's gonna be a comic adaptation of this game, which is based on a comic series! The interview contains a fair amount of minor spoilers so I will just quote the interesting bits, starting with this, by far the most important thing said in the interview

Dave Justus said:
I’ve learned Matt’s strengths and how to bolster his many, many weaknesses. And we’ve learned to sneak in references to the “U Talkin’ U2 to Me?” podcast when no one is looking, so that keeps us happy.
:D :D :D :D :D :D

OK, indulging myself aside:
Matthew Sturges said:
A question I imagine people will be asking themselves is, “If I’ve played the game, will this comic book show me anything new?” and the answer to that is an unqualified “Yes.” We’ve added a great deal of depth and characterization and back story, which we’re able to do in comics because it’s such a nimble medium. In a comic you can go anywhere and do anything and you don’t have to worry about your narrative bogging down gameplay. Of course, in the comic, the audience doesn’t get to tear anyone’s arm off, like they do in the game. You have to imagine what it’s like to tear off the arm, which is far less visceral. It’s a trade-off.
[...]
[Fables writer and creator Bill Willingham] has been nothing but supportive throughout the endeavor. We talked some about the choices that he made while he was playing the game — it seems like if any choices would be “canonical” it would be those made by the guy who created the thing it’s based on. But then you kind of also got the sense that Bill was mainly taking the most violent possible path at every decision point out of some atavistic urge to kill and destroy, and so verisimilitude was secondary to that. Which is understandable; it’s hard not to want to attack everyone when you’re being Bigby Wolf. It’s almost like Bigby’s struggle to keep his animal nature locked inside is a metaphor for some aspect of the human condition. Dave and I probably should have thought about that. Hm.
[...]
And yes, the comic is canon. The game is technically canon, but it’s canon in this strange quantum-mechanical, indeterminate way where several different outcomes are canonically all true at once until you as the player have observed them and forced the story to choose an outcome. Our comic is purely Newtonian: It collapses the narrative waveform and gives you the macro-level canonical events without all the weird simultaneously-dead-and-alive cats.
[...]
I know that some people’s initial reaction might be, “Yeah, right. A comic based on a video game based on a comic?” And I can understand why those people would be initially skeptical. But keep in mind that “The Wolf Among Us” isn’t just any video game. It’s an extremely well-written game that’s heavily focused on narrative, that has gotten rave reviews from just about everyone. So it’s not like we’re writing an adaptation of “Flappy Bird.” The source material here is very strong. And Vertigo is putting serious artistic talent on this thing. When it comes to “Fables,” they don’t mess around.
