Fake Game Codes/Info

We've all likely fallen for one of these at some point or another. It's the false game information. Whether it be a cheat code, screenshots, or certain releases that are either made out of boredome (eg, something I tend to do for just the sake of making stuff up but outright admitting it's fake) - or the kind that are just purely made to be pranks (EGM's April Fools jokes, for example).

In any case, list off any memorable ones that come to your mind. Aside from the ever-so infamous Sheng Long in SF2, as well as the Sonic and Tails unlockables in Super Smash Bros Melee, I distinctly remember someone making up a very silly cheat for Banjo-Tooie on the N64. During someone's LP of the game (I can't exactly remember who), he remarked on something while in the Atlantis portion of Jolly Roger's Lagoon, specifically with the electric eel enemies. Apparently one of his cousin's friends told him that he needed to "give the eel a peanut" - and it would give you something in return.

I couldn't even tell you how many hours I spent trying to catch Mew in Pokemon Red/Blue when I was a kid.  I must have tried every single rumor there was a thousand times.

You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

I found that truck in the game, but it was for nothing. Well, at least I managed to obtain it by trade.

What I found in Pokemon Red was Missingno. Oh, so many memories. I was able to prove my friends that it wasn't a fake rumour.

Now that I think back a bit on this, I just remembered another one. A long time ago, one of my friends told me a fake secret in Super Mario Sunshine. I have no idea if it was something somewhat widespread or something he just made up, but the notion of it was rather interesting. Essentially if you get all the Shine Sprites and/or complete an absurd amount of requirements, you can visit an "alternate island" of some kind, other than Isle Delfino. As far as I know though, the farthest you can get away from the island is the Air Strip, and not much else.

No mention of the Pokegods? Now those were the days when everyone was trying to find the invincible pre-Generation 2 incarnation of Marril.

You limit yourself so badly when you try to avoid variables. When you get over your fear of the "complexity" of variables, you will find yourself in a better place: A beautiful world where coding is actually fun.

Yeah, I remember that damn truck.  I became a legend among my friends for actually catching MissingNo, though.  They all had heard this rumor that catching one would make your Game Boy explode, and none of them had the stones to actually try it.

It's funny because i was so young and I don't know how I knew the missingno glitch.

Also back when cheatcc was the best cheat website online, it had lists full of bullshit cheats for games. Like how to get vmon in ssb and how to unlock cartmans mother in south park ralley(the requirement was fucking impossible but I still tried at the time)
I wouldn't consider that a infinite since you have to make your opponent bounce of the wall and if you do it on the wrong side of the stage the stage interaction would activate.

 • Unique, just like everyone else
Bill's Garden, Venustoise, and Togepi were my main fixation back in the days of Red and Blue.  And me, being 8 and gullible, thought it was true.  I mean, in my head, it seemed plausible since something as ridiculous as Missingno definitely existed.

I remember meeting the requirements and being confused when nothing happened.  I thought I did it wrong.

Yup. We all remember that one. It became so big, so popular that even rom hack programmers began to invent new Luigi models into the game to make him even miore real. :)
I hope that wasn't too far out of line.

One of the others I remember is Akuma being playable in Resident Evil 2.

Sheng Long being in early SF games is just too obvious now. :P

When I was younger a schoolmate told me it was possible to face Ganondorf in Majora's Mask. Son of a bitch. I spent hours exploring the Great Bay in search for an underwater cave or a secret room in the Gerudo Fortress.

Not exactly fake code/info, but I remember how in this one Pokémon magazine (god, I can't for the life of me remember what it was), it mentioned finding Mew in SSB by throwing pokéballs and it would eventually appear... only, even after seeing Mew come out of the pokéball, I still misinterpreted this as "Mew is playable," and kept trying to unlock him as a playable character. :(

Back in the late 90's, when Diablo was still new, my cousin once told me that after you defeat Diablo there was a level that's set underwater. He even went to describe details about place.

I actually believed him for many many years.

Someone once told me about a supposed rumour among the Jagged Alliance 2 community that involved summoning Dracula as a recruitable NPC using a jar with human blood.

...God, how I wish that was true.
