Felineki Attempts to Animate

So I mentioned quite some time a go that I'd like to make Jinx from Super Mario RPG as a Mugen character. In the meantime, someone else has already made their own version, but I still would like to make my own. One of the reasons I'm interested in Jinx is that his simple design makes him very easy to draw, and thus I can focus on the raw animation aspect. So after a lot of procrastinating, I finally decided to start sketching out some animation concepts. The finished sprites will be made from these somehow, although I'm not exactly sure how yet (whether I'll actually try to draw them pixel by pixel, or draw them as vectors then rasterize them, etc.)

To start off with, here are some standing punch concepts, light, medium, and hard.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

  • does this look like the face of mercy?
The last one needs to slow down as his fist reaches the extreme point, that will give him more weight.

Its pretty good overall, you just need a sense of weight on the extremes. You might want to also increase mass on the keyframes.

Sorry for the late replay, but thanks for the advice, Iced.

I have a little more progress to show. First, here are a couple roughs for neutral jump and forward dash animations:

And here's a more or less finished version of the standing light punch animation, at what will likely be the size of the finished sprites.

I've decided to draw the animations as vectors, then eventually rasterize and palettize theme somehow.

make it 6 times bigger for 1080 love (I will not be ridiculous and ask you to support 4k, after all 4k monitors/tvs are to expensive currently).

Well, I haven't actually made any animation progress since last post, but I figured I might share a few rough doodles I made a while back that plan out some of the animation ideas I have in my head.

I'm currently concentrating on porting a preexisting character, so I probably won't get back to working on Jinx until that's done.

Very cool! I like these animations a lot and your character is done in such a way I don't think it will be very hard to palletize the sprites later.

Thanks! Yeah, hopefully palettizing these shouldn't be too big an issue. I might end up using colored outlines, or adding the occasional shadow here or there, but they aren't going to get much more detailed than the animated examples I've posted.

Here are a few more sketches I dug up, you can see Bombs Away and the Jinxed finisher here.

Great animations, looks promising.
Glad that you started with a cartoony character because they are way easier to animate than real proportions and lets you experiment and be more creative ^_^

My only suggestion:

Take the frame where hes going up and duplicate it, then squash him a little on the sides and make him a little taller, then make those 2 frames loop rapidly as he goes up, that shake motion gives a sensation that the char is really forcing to break the wind above him.

Its not really needed, its just a minor detail i like to give to my jumps or fliying animations, specially at high speeds.

Yeah, that really simple and flexible design of his is what made me think he'd be a good subject to attempt to animate. Anyway, I actually was planning to stretch him out a bit during the rising part of the jump, but I guess I just didn't bother including it in that sketch. Thanks for the feedback!
