Is this the right place to put this?... I'm not sure...Anyways, I'm thinking on buying a game pad for my computer so I could use it to play Mugen (and other things)And since I haven't touched a computer game pad for ten years, I would like to know how do I set up a game pad for Mugen. Can I configure it inside Mugen?Or do I have to use this joy2key thingy that I've been hearing about? Also, if I were to get a controler with an control/analog stick, would it be usable in Mugen?
If you buy a game pad that's specifically for PC, then you can just insert it into the usb port and windows should automatically install the drivers. To configure it in MUGEN, just go to Options>Input Config. If you use something like a PS3 controller, then you'll have to manually install the drivers. Instruction are on the net and it's not hard.
'Kay, that's cool...So I don't need to use that joy2key program right? But what if the controller has an analog stick? Will it be usable in Mugen?
Alright, thanks for the info.I'm gonna post here again if I encounter any problems after I buy a gamepad.
Please buy a 6 button gamepad. playing fighting games with 4 button pads like the PS2/3 one (and putting some attacks on the triggers) feels horrible to me.Unless you're planning on using KOF chars only, of course.
Too late. XDI have never seen a 6 button game pad in a store before. The 4 button pad I just got doesn't feel so bad.
LOL, it's not that it's bad to play with PS2 type pads (many people play with those), it's just that many fighting games like most Capcom games have been made to be played with a 6 button pad. It just feels more natural to play with those instead of setting MP and MK to the triggers. But if you went in your local shop, it's understandable you didn't find any 6 button pad, they can be hard to find at times. It's even probably better to use an adaptator to plug in your Saturn or Genesis pad through USB.
The reasons I mentioned M$ Sidewider:1. it is made by M$ and windows is made by M$ too so no driver is needed just plug and play2. it has six buttons (or more)3. it is cheaper than joypads that use analog swirl
I use a pair of PS2 controllers and a usb converter, I don't need driver.I like shoulder button, it gives faster reaction and less thumb error when pressing the button, because 3 buttons in a row is harder to manage for me. and also shoulder button makes easier multiple button commands, like throws or some super moves.

I use the exact same setup myself. I remember playing nothing but fighting games on the PlayStation with those comfy DualShocks. I would also like to add in that the Sega Saturn had the best 6 Button Controller ever. And D-Pad. Along with the Neo Geo Pocket Color's analogue stick.
MalaDingDong said, May 09, 2011, 06:58:21 am6 button pad? NIGGA I GOT 8......kinda.Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty... ahahaha what is that.I use my Toodles Cthulhu/ChImp board controllers (nearly any console I can make a cable for; 360 and PS3, respectively). Work great, but for 1.0, you may need to config in old WinMUGEN hack and copypaste those settings in the .cfg over, because it will detect two button presses if you don't plug it in in digital-only mode (though you shouldn't have to since old win did it fine. But if you prefer pad (and you want one JUST for PC), the best damn pad I've ever used was the Logitech Rumblepad 2. It's a shame that one of the buttons eventually crapped out on me, but other than that... that d-pad was so godlike.
I'd be motivated to build my own arcade sticks because I really think they're beautiful. But I won't do so because the SF4 one I have, I can't play with for shit... I guess I just need more training, but I really suck with arcade sticks. Maybe I should buy an 8 directions "thing" to get used to it, instead of using the 4 directions square that makes it really odd to input commands.

But, mind you, if you want to use the joystick on this one, I'd recommend going for another model since with time, it can get unconfortable playing with it and though make you use the D-pad. I really would love to see MUGEN having the rumble option, I would be in heaven with that controller
MUGEN had forcefeedback at one point but nobody made use of that SCTRL since we can't really tell what it should be lol.DMK said, May 16, 2011, 03:05:18 pmbtw JZ, do you have higher res pictures of your arcade sticks?http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/Yesujira/rooms%20and%20shit%20yo/DSCN0012.jpghttp://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/Yesujira/rooms%20and%20shit%20yo/DSCN0008.jpgAnything larger would be the originals, which are 4000x3000 and about 2.65Mb each.

That pad reminds me of an old turbo Genesis controller I have. Loved using it for the Power Rangers fighting game.Jesuszilla said, May 17, 2011, 09:40:21 pmDMK said, May 16, 2011, 03:05:18 pmbtw JZ, do you have higher res pictures of your arcade sticks?http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/Yesujira/rooms%20and%20shit%20yo/DSCN0012.jpghttp://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/Yesujira/rooms%20and%20shit%20yo/DSCN0008.jpgAnything larger would be the originals, which are 4000x3000 and about 2.65Mb each.I am incredibly gelatinous over that Felicia one. I got a few now I could mod, but just can't decide on a who or what to put on it...
I think it's supposed to be modeled after a Saturn controller. And if I may make a suggestion, make one with Wesker. Because he's so pringles.

Buttons should be personal preference though.

Rednavi said, September 19, 2011, 05:55:02 pmThere's nothing wrong with that How do you manage to do half circles with the joystick without jumping
That's like asking somebody how he plays SFIV with a hitbox. If he uses a hitbox and know how to play with it, then he will be able to play as well as you with a D-PAD...I just, do a QCF motion, why would I jump during the input? That only happens to n00bs.
Yeah. I have a gamepad. I use the control pad, though if I practiced, I can play with the joystick instead.
Arcade sticks are better than any pad. I can't stand playing any fighting game without an arcade stick, even mugen
I do not like arcade sticks at all...Any time I had to play MVC2 or SF4 with in the arcades, I'd have to use my right hand to move this stick while pressing the buttons with my left hand 'cause I suck the normal way.Even like this, I still suck with arcade sticks.I prefer using a keyboard or a controller much better. But I see all the pros use arcade sticks.I don't know how anyone are able to use them so good. (besides many years of practice, unfortunately, I don't have that much money on me.)
