Big O and Evangelion are the ones I've watched.

Preferably, go with the Rebuild films if you intend to watch Evangelion. The original series and End of Evangelion are too demanding on the casual viewer and contain quite some mindscrew.

Big O is pretty good, although it's ending was disappointing.

I'll wait for the gundamn gundam to suggest which subseries of it are good, in the meanwhile.

gunbuster - aim for the top : short ova series with good emotion. if you like it a lot you might want to watch the sequel, but it is very different.
evangelion - you probably want to watch this after you have watched more standar mecha series, as game changers are more enjoyable that way.
code geass -  has some decent mecha action and mixes psychological combat (death note), sometimes gets a bit ridiculous but it's enjoyable enough to overlook that.
tengen toppa gurren laggan - if code geass is a bit ridiculous, this is over the top ridiculous; it's stilla  pretty nice mecha series.
kannazuki no miko - mixes mechas, the orochi legend and has one of my favorites love triangles.
macross - choose the series that seem to strike your tastes better. maybe plus is the better way to get into the series.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the best, although it's "mecha" is debatible, go with the original series and the  two movies first, then watch Rebuild. Because there are things that you'll need to know to understand Rebuild. Warning, this anime may cause mental and emotional damage.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is good too, it's got a lot humor, but some mental damage too.
Gundam 00 is pretty good.
Thanks Watta for the sig and avi.

Full Metal Panic - not entirely a mecha series, but it's a wonderful one. Watch it!
Rahxephon - like Evangelion, this is a bit of a special series. Very interesting story if you're into that kind of stuff, and wonderful graphics and music.

It's good until the last episode.

Don't watch Evangelion for a long while, period. If you are really that curious, only watch the Rebuild films.
They're less confusing.

Battle Angel Alita

Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan
Kannazuki no Miko
Full Metal Panic

Still need a good Gundam though.

Then he doesn't have to watch 3.33.

First two films aren't as hard to understand.(Unless you're talking about the last half of 2.0, which is confusing.)
Nope. Dorothy was still a virgin.
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

Exactly. I assume he was just making a joke by saying 'Did Roger bang Dorothy?'

Plus, the original series has some higlights that rebuild doesn't, berserk Eva-01, many of the angels are better than in rebuild, etc..
