S.D. said, June 21, 2013, 01:58:53 amMuvluv's the first 2 episodes make it look like the series is going to go into an entirely different direction than it actually went. Then again it's based on a VN and light novel. So it's a story about love (read, harem) and girls in really dumb-looking sexy uniforms, the war and mecha action is just really a backdrop (And it's really noticeable when they force the beach episode almost out of nowhere), the characters aren't likable... they're not bad either, they're just bland. And the main character is the worst offender, they spend so much time explaining how the BETA are this huge threat to humanity but he ends up having a ridiculous amount of plot armor (Although to be fair, he doesn't act like your generic dumb as hell harem lead)Animation and art quality is all over the place, as expected of something by Satelight (Oh HI Basquash!). It was also directed by Inagaki Takayuki who LOVES fanservice and ignores plot (He directed Rosario + Vampire after all); and again it's really easy to realize this after the first two episodes are full of plot and nothing really happens for the rest of the series (I'm pretty sure that the VN and light novels are more consistent and this is one of the main issues the anime had, terrible studio and terrible director)muvluv was planned to be just an ad for the mecha-models and only 12 episodes long with no real substantial plot, as they specifically choose the total eclipse novels because they are centered on test pilots and as such, they would be able to show many more different mechas that in any other point of the series. bluray pre-orders weer good so they changed plans halfway, which is what explains the filler/beach episodes right in the start of the series, the quality roller coaster, etc...talking about kawamori so escaflowne does not fit in the mecha genre then ? Posted: June 21, 2013, 04:09:09 am---then, patlabor always gets mentioned in those tpyes of topics.
Escaflowne is alright, it came out way before he went full retard with awkward fanservice (Basquash, AKB0048), the love triangle is really dumb but hey, if it doesn't have one it's not a Kawamori show! The action is OK, the artsyle is pretty good, it has an interesting universe and mecha design. I think it fits that grey area where there's mecha but it doesn't end up being the main focus (Rayearth, and heck, they both have the same fantasy world setting)Duo Solo said, June 21, 2013, 03:42:23 amHow is Gurren Lagann? JM or S.D. didn't mention it.Enjoyable for what it is (A homage to a bunch of old shows, mainly Getter Robo since Imaishi is a HUGE GR fan)It doesn't try anything original (Other than the whole "I have the biggest giant robot in existence", which is debatable since Demonbane and Getter Emperor are up there too) but it has nice animation and I'm a fan of Imaishi's art style.-Macross Plus is alright if you want a grittier, down to earth Macross with no idols or Aliens, the basic premise is pretty much Top Gun.
something of consideration when talking about macross, it has two bonuses, the first one is that the music is very good, that is under the condition that you like the genre of music they choose for that specific series; the second is that the battle choreographies are really good (google itano circus) the last part is also teh reason you must watch one macross series (zero, like plus is also very accessible). Macross ii got retconned out of canon and it's pretty much just a lame copy of the first series. Posted: June 21, 2013, 04:36:55 amalso thx to shindio and jmorphman for giving their time and sharing info on the genre.
Gurren Lagann is like Jewish fireworks.Duo Solo said, June 21, 2013, 01:47:06 amDid you really watch all those Gundams? Jmorphman said, June 21, 2013, 01:32:45 amOh, I've wasted my life. Not literally all of them, I haven't seen every Evolve, nor all of Superior Defender, nor every SD short, and I haven't seen Sangokuden. And I skipped most of the compilations.S.D. said, June 21, 2013, 01:58:53 amHonestly, I think you need to know some basics about C.E. before watching Stargazer. Reading a plot summary would probably be enough, I think.S.D. said, June 21, 2013, 01:58:53 am And SEED is alright, not good or terribly bad.But I haaaaaaaate it. So much. S.D. said, June 21, 2013, 01:58:53 amAlso, Votoms is a big franchise, sure it's no Gundam but... personally I'd start with Mellowlink. That would work too.maximilianjenus said, June 21, 2013, 04:03:19 amthen, patlabor always gets mentioned in those tpyes of topics.Ack! I forgot Patlabor!
Jmorphman said, June 21, 2013, 04:40:47 amNot literally all of them </3Jmorphman said, June 21, 2013, 04:40:47 amI haven't seen every Evolve, nor all of Superior Defender, nor every SD short, and I haven't seen Sangokuden. And I skipped most of the compilations....OH, okay that's reasonable. On the other hand I'm really really dumb when it comes to being a completionist so I've even watched the compilation (Or "Special Edition") movies/OVA's. And then I even watched SEED and SEED HD because stuff like Nicol's death was completely different. You should watch the rest of the Evolve shorts! They're fun little fanservice.I've watched all thee SD shorts (Not counting the last two or so that never got subbed)Sangokuden wasn't amazing, but the episodes were really really short so it was easy to watch it over the course of one year. And what about this?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8RBXqrXL4c
Yeah you forgot Patlabor. Shame on you !And you must see the Ghost in the Shell series and movies (Tachikoma rules !)
eureka 7 (dont watch ao), votoms (havent watched the side stories) and whatever those guys before me said.if youre going to watch one gundam in your life, make it turn Aalso putting in a vote for rahxephon... actually you might want to put that on hold for a bit longer if youre a scrub
I don't think it's been mentioned, but Evangelion may also require you to do some internet searching. JMorphman is also forgetting to mention Big O's strange ending.
OMG, now I remember one good mecha series no one mentioned yet: Burst Angel/Bakuretsu Tenshi (Jo + Meg = )
Basara-kun said, June 21, 2013, 10:15:07 pmBurst Angel/Bakuretsu TenshiGonzo. So uhhh no. And that's a super forgettable series (Gonzo's only two good shows have been Gankutsuou and Samurai Seven)It had nice mecha battles but 20 minutes of walking around and one minute of action in every episode.Bland characters with no depth to them and you pretty much never find out their motivation. It's not really good, it's a guilty pleasure/entertaining anime but I'd rather watch 100 other different shows or franchises (Getter, Gundam, GaoGaiGar, Gunbuster, Macross, etc.) before even considering adding this to my backlog. S.D. said, June 21, 2013, 11:44:18 pmGonzo. So uhhh no. And that's a super forgettable series (Gonzo's only two good shows have been Gankutsuou and Samurai Seven)You monster! Hellsing, Full Metal Panic, Last Exile... FUCKING FULL METAL PANIC ! The few episodes of Chrono Crusade I watched seemed fine too. Meh, I guess it's as forgettable as Trinity Blood or Gantz (MEEEEHHHH!!!)I'd add Gin-iro no Kami no Agito and Afro Samurai to the list too, but they're movies.
Last Exile was OK I guess...I want to forget I watched Chrno Crusade, from what I understand they went for yet another one of their infamous original endings where they leave everything in a dumb cliffhanger, I've heard that the manga actually brings a satisfying closure to the series and answers all the questions. Are you seriously implying that Gonzo's Hellsing and FMP are good?!
S.D. said, June 22, 2013, 12:15:21 amI want to forget I watched Chrno Crusade, from what I understand they went for yet another one of their infamous original endings where they leave everything in a dumb cliffhanger, I've heard that the manga actually brings a satisfying closure to the series and answers all the questions. It does actually. Still didn't like the series personally.
Heh, so yeah, typical Gonzo.Personally I hated 90% the characters but I had to finish the series because it was relatively short and it wasn't worth dropping.
gonzo would always "choose" good/interesting stuff to adapt, but they always did something idiotic in the process.
I never read the Hellsing mangas (they come from a Manga, not the contrary, right ?), so the Hellsing anime was fine at the time. And yeah, I really loved the FMP series when I was young, loved the graphics, characters were fine (okay, hero was generic, but that happens a lot), loved the humor, and the story was interesting... of course, we never got an ending (or maybe I should read the manga ?)Note that I may love FMP because it was the time where fansubs were arriving in France, and I started getting interested in animes other than those we had on TV in French (Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Captain Tsubasa, Attacker You!, Grendizer, Saint Seiya), so everything we could find with my friends was kind of a novelty.
yeah, first anime always is special no matter how bad it is.hellsing's original is a manga, FMP's original is a light novel. there is also a manga, but I don't know if it adapts the history fully.
Cybaster said, June 22, 2013, 12:26:55 amFMP, HellsingLooks like you're mistaken, FMP itself is fine. Gonzo fucked up with the adaptation. They fucked up so badly that Kyoani had to spend a couple of episodes in FMP:TSR fixing their mess.Hellsing was "good" (Not counting all the scenes they skipped/censored) only because of the source material, and then it went down the shitter whent they started with their anime original shit (Incognito?! Ugh)If someone hasn't watched Hellsing, he should never, ever watch Gonzo's awful adaptation, he should watch the Hellsing Unlimited OVA's (And I do understand that at the time that's all we had, the TV series)tl;dr - If something by Gonzo seems good it's only because of the source material, they'll always fuck it up with their "original" touch.
