battle arena toshinden. most of those characters were killed or aged after 3, and that takes full effect in 4. eiji grows old, naru grows up, abel and his organization are all killed, etc. so after i'm done flaunting around my depressing amount of fighting game information;eddie is most likely gonna stick around, yeah. unless they want to off zato altogether or officially replace kaneto shiozawa as zato's voice actor, but guilty gear doesn't seem to be the kind of series to just permanently off one of their characters....except leopaldon and fanny lol

There's a 5 year period of time between GG1 and GG2 and they haven't even covered half of that in the current fighter story. And GG2 did a lot of good for the plot.
