  • Currently working in 8 bits...

Dee from darkstalkers

I'd rather see the older Anita that Dee fights on the last level.
Altough I she should go with the same moves as in the MvC...

That, or Dracula, and Cornell from Castlevania Judgment.

Or Mima from the old PC 90's Touhou games... in the SWR style ofcourse. -3-

Damn, so many choises. :S

Hmm...

It seems I would be the one person who suggests this: Rei Ayanami, from Neon Genesis Evangelion, preferably in CvS or pre-2001 KOF style. If you can't do that, there's a sprite in my avatar (of yours truly, I might add) that I'd like to see if you could replicate in a different pose or something.

You look like you're lost.  Montyoum does 3d characters not 2d.

Hey guys thanks for all the feedback. The info is really helpful.

Ok so I decided what I'm going to do. I'm going to infact do this PNG folder with HD Sprites and animate at 30fps.

As for characters I think I'll start off with something simple and do MasterCheif and Samus. The reason being is that they're pretty much non deformable characters that have no form of cloth or dynamic objects. This will make it and easy sell cause it'll be ok for the characters to feel intentionally "stiff."

Mind you this is going to be my first run so I'm definitely NOT going to stop there. After getting some experience it'll make it more worthwhile once I get to even more characters.

Also the whole Master Cheif Samus thing will really garner some good attention. I think when a mugen MC & Samus hits the web it'll really turn heads. Which in turn results in more people being interested in Mugen which ultimately is a good thing.

I'm going to get started with some here and there stuff. This should go fast so long as I find time to work on it. I'll keep you posted.

aww i was gonna vote for dante but the reason for not making him is rather understandable, maybe thats the reason reu went for a robotic type of char too

neways as for the .sff file i would still like to suggest you try it and even more go all the way to the .air file which is where we make the animations in frame by frame style (at least make a couple of animations and add a few sprites to the .sff and leave the rest for whoever takes over the proyect later on)  ive made a few characters and given the knowledge you already have a few days should be enough to understand them and i say this because it will give you a much better understanding of how mugen/2d fighters work and in the end save you a lot of work while making the huge amount of sprites you will require also will translate in an overall better result once the coder kicks in cause from the start you will have an idea of how the end result will look instead of spriting in the dark, your previous and amazing works show a very talented person so this will be baby stuff for ya and heck you might even like it

i know plenty of all this and im more than willing to guide you as much as u want messenger would be a good way ive helped quite a few fellas that way b4, trust me its way easier than it looks at first as many creators here can confirm

Don't fret! I think Dante is a great idea. I just don't think I should do him right away. In fact I just noticed the Vergil that's available that done really well and figure I should wait til I'm better at this before I try it.

I do feel like trying to make my own sff & air file.

Ok one quikc question is do you use photoshop or painst shop pro to export said pcx/png's?

Another quick question (which'd probably just be better if I find the maker himself) why did the guy who made the DMC3 vergil go through all the trouble of filtering him to look 2d? I notice it looks like he either used a veiwer or something to get his ingame animations and then rotoscoped them for a more 2d look.

  • does this look like the face of mercy?
Probably to give him more of a natural look when standing next to 2d backdrops.
Check up with cyanide and other people on the help area if you are interested in going deeper into sffs and airs.

Photoshop always seemed to me to be the main tool used for paletezing.
Also, if you feel like starting out with something other smaller than a character, this tutorial will come in handy.
http://mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php?topic=104470.0
Cybaster goes into details about applying palettes that could be useful after a while.

My only advice is to start small and then increase your scope as you get more comfortable, coders are sure to pop up with time.

Weren't these sprites made from scratch ? Not sure, I didn't really pay attention.

Both can do basically the same things. My personnal preference go toward Paint Shop Pro, on which I have all my experience, but they both can export PCXs - PNGs can just be ignored, since ultimately you need paletized PCXs, FF/FFU being able to use PNGs is an unnecessary step and can cause incorrect conversions, and PCXs can be manipulated just the same anyway.

If you already have the sprites, all you have to worry about is that they all share the same colors. Both Paint Shop Pro and PhotoShop can extract the palette - one in .pal format, the other in .act format, but there are simple tools that can make the conversion both ways anyway, so there's no problem here, it's only a matter of your personnal preference.

As for what I was saying earlier about PCX vs PNG, it's not a problem if you have PNGs, you can just batch convert to PCX (with any tool like PSP, PS, IrfanView...) and then use another simple tool, PCXClean, to apply the palette to all the sprites in a batch. All you have to worry about is that all the sprites have the same color, and that you obtain one palette with all the colors. The rest can be batched.
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.
