First character took me about a year to make.

Current record time for a single character is three days.

Well, if am maintaining the rate I am going, it is going to be a year.  :P I better motivate myself to work harder.

Making a character good took around 2 years.

Current record is 14 days (Burai).

Depends on what you know, what you want to do, and whether you've got a basis for doing it.

For eg, any time i have to create a new system the character takes about 4 months. However if it's a simple character, it's about 2 weeks. If i use the simple character as a base for another character, about 3 days. And a good chunk of the 3 is adding the sprites and doing clsns.

 • Somebody PM when Caddie is no longer a mod.
So by what Cy is saying.

First character with a custom system, a very long time.

Next character not so much.

It took me months to make a cut and paste coded sprite swap of P.O.T.S's Nash.

Of course that included ripping sprites, and trying to figure out what code does what, in a very complicated creator's system.

I'm just now starting my first custom system and so far it has taken me months and I barely have something better than a KFM. Again that includes making sprites.

If I would have started the right way I would have three or four characters done by now.

What is the right way? Who knows?

Time doesn't mean anything if you have absolutely no clue what you're doing.

If you're working non-stop, it'll take about 12 hours top.

If you are lazy like this girl here, it'll be between 3 to 7 days, because you only work a few hours per day on it, if any.
To quote Lt. Frank Drebin: "Cheer up, Ed. This is not goodbye. It's just I won't ever see you again."

Takes you days to finish one character?  o_O Including everything from spriting to coding?

If yes, then I am way beyond lazy...

This is still relatively dependant on WHAT you code. Doing something without anything behind it takes much longer than something you have a base for.

Which is why most of my characters take so fucking long, i create a new base system every damned time. I should really stop doing that.

This depends because of the creators time and effort. Inspiration and idea's. Drawing, scanning, recoloring, shading and animating takes some time for smooth and well details. The programming can take a bit longer and shorter with a template. The next Characters you create could take lesser because of a template you allready have.

A month for my first character, 5 for my second.

Depends on what you know, what you want to do, and whether you've got a basis for doing it.

Should be said to any creator that thinks they're moving to slow.

From 1 day (Kong style : template + shitty coding + no bugtesting) to several years (Reu style : total spriting + tons of brainstorming + total creation of sound, FXs, etc.)

Record time for me was 4 days (Dialga & Palkia), albeit numerous glitches but at least it was doable. Of course my policy is get the basic stuff done and clean up if anything turns up. So technically there will never be a final version to any of my stuff. Combine that with the fact that most of the feedback I get, or anyone else for that matter, is synonymous with "NICE CHAR +1" rather than actual constructive feedback, then it takes even longer.

On average, I would say about a month just to get a first version working. Just for reference:

Kikyo: 1 month
Kagura: 1 month
SSB Meiling: 1 month
Dialga & Palkia: 4 days
Cuccos: 5 days
Cyber Naraku: 1 month
SSB Komachi: 1 month
Giratina: 4 months
Primeus: 2 weeks

And these are just the first versions, not including any updates they may have gotten since their initial releases.

You limit yourself so badly when you try to avoid variables. When you get over your fear of the "complexity" of variables, you will find yourself in a better place: A beautiful world where coding is actually fun.

Terry took me a few months, gradually decreased development time as I moved on from character to character (pre-existing base code and bases, experience, etc.), minimum record is 5 days which I could probably shorten to 3 days but i'm lazy.
