When did it start giving you stars? I think the portrait is enough. Why dick about with user groups not only giving someone something you just have to remove, but in the case of yearly you have to remember to remove it. It's a fun little competition. Don't try and make it more serious than it is.

It's been giving stars for as long as I remember. IDK maybe ask Rajaa or whoever came up with the stars idea. I'm just getting peoples' thoughts here.

Until the pressure of maintaining that level of quality or surpassing it each following release drives the winners mad.

So yeah, a year should do it.

I'm also under the impression that people keep neglecting data from the game, do you guys know how PotS made his original characters? He actually studied every single game he referenced, down to the core. Doing this properly requires understanding how the original system was made, not just winging it.

I'd prefer if CotY stars last the year after and CotM stars last only during the year given.

I don't see much of a point because of the Hall of Fame ,anyway.

you'd just have to keep a small calendar as in "Remove star from this guy this month". it would be a once a month event for one user. that's not very complicated...

Same as now, really. Every month you give a star and take it away. Only difference is the star you take away is from a year ago instead of a month ago. Maybe you have to go look at a list to remember who that is instead of remembering? Big whoop.

Hmmm... how about this criteria:

All stars are permanent.

CotY: Star remains the same.

CotM: Each month has a specific color similar to birthstones.

Winners of multiple months would get something similar to a CotY star.

LurkerSupreme and SnakeByte also bring up good points too. Monthly stars can last for that month and then Yearly stars could last for the year.

That was my understanding of what a yearly star would be, otherwise only January's winner would actually have the star for a year.

We can make a topic in public staff or the CotM board or something to keep track of things.

Why not treat the stars like "title belts"? CotY winner has the star until next year's winner is chosen. CotM winner has it until next month's is chosen. I imagine it would be easier to keep track of adding/removing them that way since you're just moving one star per month and one star per year (with the exception of collabs like Cybaster/Balthazar or Chazzanova/Quickfist). As for keeping track of those who have won in the past, well, I thought that's what the Hall of Fame was for.

Isn't that exactly how it's done right now
And it makes the star pointless because no one ever looks at the stars and no one notices it if it lasts only a month. If it's only a month, it might as well not be there at all.

Having the star forever is senseless.
The star represents the current CotM winner. It isn't a place holder such as the contributor star.
I've noticed the star thus far for other CotM winners and I'm sure others have too.

CotY should be the only "yearly" star because like CotM, it shows the current victor of said year.

The point of the suggestion is precisely that it shouldn't just represent the current winner (because no one notices it, which makes it completely pointless, for one). Think of it as an Employee of the Month award: A employee who wins this gets recognition, a hand shake and a picture with their smiling face and name on it. That's pretty much what the CotM is. It isn't like Nunor's star which lasts forever because he literally started the Guild.

i think that BOTH should stay because at the end of the day...u did make a winning character. So what if was last month/year. Its like the Grammys.... Lauryn Hill hasn't won a grammy in years....does that mean she still isn't a great artist. Did they take her grammy away because it was a new year. i think not.

The star is meant to be whatever we want it to be. If we want the star to be a trophy or just the same as the Contributor star, then that's what it will be. The options are pretty fucked up right now, mainly the first two. We're talking about two different stars, why would the COTY one last for only one month? Jesus, you only had one job! Fix the poll!

Why can this great guy, and this amazing member have permanent stars over a small challenge which not everyone knows of but yet these stars have so much discussion over their time period and how they shouldn't be shown off that long?

I looked up that WLS challenge thing and it seemed pretty difficult and contrived, seemed to warrant some sort of award cause there was some hard work put into it by the looks of it. That being said I don't understand how it warrants a permanent star and COTY doesnt

The Legend Will Never Die

When I created the WLS stars my plan was to hold different types of contests in order to keep cycling them (extend awards all the way to graphics, coding challenges, stuff like this).

My plan failed when school got real hard on me and stopped having the free time to come up with said contests, but my intention was having users feel proud for having accomplished things. COTY and COTM follow this spirit

Sorry for letting them go like that, I had really great plans for those.

Make the stars permanent regardless of what people want because everyone can't be pleased. I'm going through the COTM list right now and giving everyone who ever won their star back.

It's time to be decisive. I'm not trying to step on toes, but enough is a enough. It's not that serious a discussion and it's near impossible for any decision regarding this issue to have a real impact on the functionality of the forum.

I think the character of the year should be the title star that people battle over every year as a title belt (it should change every year, but only if the winner changes). The CotM star should be a permanent token of everyone's accomplishment of making it into the CotY contest.

Cyanide and Basara also have this problem (and possibly a few others I'm forgetting).

I noticed it a few months ago and tried to fix it and I thought I got it fixed for me (but couldn't replicate it with anyone else) but then it went back eventually, and then I don't remember if I posted about it anywhere but I guess I didn't but this is important dammit!

Just use the previous system. Or just make the COTM stars last a year for a respective month (April winner will have the star until the April winner of next year is announced and to each month respectively). I didn´t see a problem with the previous system at all.

Maybe custom titles could also fit the bill as prizes, instead of having a COTY star forever why not present them with a custom title?

A programming challenge, the most innovative character/stage/screenpack to follow the theme gets a neat shiny profile prize.

The best of all worlds: you are free to choose your own interpretation of the theme and you are free to enter the contest as long as your work follows the theme. I would suggest judging the work based on innovation, originality and coding finesse.

For a contest such as this one I would propose April's Fools as potential candidate for holding it. As for theme? I think CONFUSION would fit the bill really well.
