What do I need to do to fix the background so that mugen won't recognize it in an image? If I set the background to black, parts of the character that's also black disappears, what do I need to do?

In the palette of the sprite, Mugen will consider as transparent the color that is in the last color slot of the palette.
Fill the background with the color in that slot (be it black or pink or anything) and make sure the character doesn't use the same slot.
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

what if that color is also in the object, for example the image I'm loading uses black for background, but my picture has black in it?

What I mean is, how do you change the color in the last slot because that color can be found in my picture

If you have any art program like Photoshop, you can change the last color by going into the picture's color table, and then changing the value of color 256 (last color slot).

Look for the button that talks about PALETTE -_- Edit the palette and click on the color slots of the palette to change the colors in them. Seriously, just try and click on the buttons that seem to make sense. If it says "edit palette" you know it's what you're looking for.

it doesn't matter if it's the same color - the colors themselves don't matter. As long as the background is associated with the last color slot of the palette and the part of the character is associated with another color slot, even if they both just so happen to have the same color, it will work out.

This is what you change in the palettes. Any color you set here, becomes the transparant color.

What if he doesn't want to change it?

Then that's entirely up to him. I'm not going to force him to change it, after all. I thought it'd be some help incase he ever needs to change it.

What if he doesn't want to change it?

Then his background won't become transparent? If that's slot 0 and sets the transparency then it has to have something in it. Otherwise he'll get no transparency at all, or bits he doesn't want transparent transparent.
