I'm just asking how much would an author charge for a character?

Or as much as a couple thousand.

If you're asking how much it costs to get a creator to make a custom character to your liking, there have only been a couple of examples of this.
I remember Borghi agreed to it once, and I remember it wasn't cheap.

...If you're asking how much it costs to download a character, it's free of course.

Figuring things out, one sprite at a time.

The answer will be different depending on just what the job is and the amount of work involved. Something that is more customized or original will cost more than something more based on pre-existing work because there is more that needs to be done there. Also, people might shy away from cases like your example where you are looking to pay for someone to remake a commercial work that really doesn't deviate a lot from the original for legal reasons.

Is this a hypothetical question on your part, or are you looking to have something done?

IIRC $2000 for maxine. A completely original character done entirely by Borghi.

We'd prefer not to profit from copyrighted work mind you, that could be a bad thing. I think some other people have made small stuff for like $50 a pop but that's not too common.

Dunno of any other event where someone paid somebody else for a character.
