After about 2 months in the making, I have decided to release my parody AMV to the public.

For an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the creative process I went through for creating this, you can read thatvlhere:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/?z4k1treyb22u69t
One of the reasons I uploaded the AMV to YouTube is because I'm not going to submit it to Ohayocon, especially since it would be a 1h 41 min drive to get there.  Plus my work schedule rotates, so who knows what things would be like around that time.

Have a few chuckles, read the documentation if you want, and enjoy.

I honestly wouldn't call this an AMV. It seems more like something else, but what that would be called I don't know.
Audio balance is an issue here, as some parts come off as quiet, and other parts being suddenly loud (Namely the Asuka voice acting and credits music)

Barring the audio on Asuka (I tried to normalize it, but it didn't work.).
As for the music at the credits, the original song was loud anyways.  The audio dips are more or less Youtube's fault.  The audio sounds much better in the original video file I have on my computer.

It's like he wanted to do this but his sources were boring-ass parts in movies (I will never forgive you for what you did to Tommy Boy), more fucking Metal Gear and Killer7 (I never played the latter and I never will now, THANKS), and RANDUM MONKEY CHEESE bullshit.

Honestly, I found Shafty's vid where he recorded himself babbling about MUGEN Blender to be less embarrassing than this.

If it sounds like I'm being mean, it's because there's no advice I can give you to improve. It's hard to even notice what the technical issues are because there's just so much fundamentally wrong with everything else.

And honestly... don't get me started on the behind the scenes doc. Just... goddamn.

That's just your opinion.  The only relevant feedback to me is Ding mentioning issues with the audio balance.  The Evangelion segment is the only one that I feel like going back and actually changing the dialogue for. (The random word salad at the end actually ruins it now.)

Breaking it down..

Tenchi Muyo segment:
Fair, b

Both segments involving Chobits and dialogue from Metal Gear Solid 2:
Relies on knowledge of references.

Yu Yu Hakusho segment:
Not the best.  Maybe try with dialogue from Napoleon Dynamite one last time and call it a day

Shinji and the phone call:
Opens up opportunities

Housekeeping:
Works for some, but not for all.

Evangelion elevator:
Just adding music doesn't make it humorous to the unfamilar.  Hence the addition the gunshots, explosions, and random noises.  Did once plan to add audio recording saying that "Gendo Ikari has a gun, everybody run for your lives."

Credits:
The Residents' albums from the '70s are considered their best.  Except for Buster & Glen.  Buster & Glen sucked.  The song in the AMV is actually from their most "accessible" album, Duck Stab.
Setting scenes with Johan to "Frosty The Snowman" or some innocent children's song sounds better in comparison.

Frankly, I don't have a team like AMV Hell does, so I'm solo with every project I do.  This AMV was more or less a quick thing I wanted to try out so that I could listen to music normally again.
Still, I find Ding's feedback more helpful.  No offense.

i don't know why you thought this deserved a long post, let alone a thread, let alone a downloadable separate documentary. if you make a funny thing (or at least supposed to be funny) you should just keep it brief.

I just like to analyze things a lot.  I only shared the document, just in case people were interested in the creative process, what could've been in the AMV, and a few beta elements.

The Evangelion elevator scene mockery is salvagable, the strange phone call Shinji receives would actually be to other people, and I should've used the other part of that scene from Napoleon Dynamite ("Why'd you eat all the frickin' chips, Kip?" Napoleon's dialogue would still be synched to Yusuke, while Kip's dialogue would be synched to Kuwabara.).

It's a failed video of parodies with too much referential humor.  In retrospect, the Tommy Boy segment now feels it was made in desperation to get the video closer to five minutes.  I'm probably going to remove the video later today.
And every damn creation I make sucks, regardless of how much time I put into it.

Half of this AMV was either terrible or too referential.  If you have any other creations, you would understand.  Daniella isn't even perfect, with me only seeing that I didn't increase some pausetimes and misc. problems that I didn't see until I did a short run through Arcade Mode yesterday.  Chaos (the thing with recolored Lucas sprites) was a mockery that hasn't been lived down.

This AMV was good up until I exposed it to the internet and got brutally honest feedback.  I have an idea of taking clips from Cowboy Bebop with Spike Spiegel and Faye Valentine synched to dialogue from MGS1 (The part where Meryl asks how Snake recognized her and he responds by saying "you have a cute butt"):

I would flash a short clip of a scene from episode 3 to make it funny to even the unfamilar.
People at a convention wouldn't say "WHY IS THERE FUCKING METAL GEAR IN THIS."  They'd laugh.  The unfamilar would get it (thanks to the short clip of Faye's butt appearing on the screen for a moment) and Cowboy Bebop fans would get it because Faye's clothes are tight up to the point where she might as well be having a wedgie 24/7.  MGS fans would get a kick out of it too.  Win-win for everybody.

Makes much more sense than the scenes from Chobits synched to audio of Colonel Campbell going crazy in MGS2.

But no, I don't see that crap immediately.  I don't realize how mediocre something is until I release it and embarrass myself.

Also MGS2 has gotten boring and difficult.  Tuxedo Snake's VR missions rely more on speed than creative thought to get top high scores.

No. No no no no no no.

The problem isn't the references you're making. The problem is that the references just aren't universal. It would be like if I took the ending monologue Humphrey Bogart makes in Casablanca and put a vid of Erin and Armin from Attack on Titan on top of it. The most you'll get is some people saying "oh, that's Casablanca" or "oh, that's Attack on Titan." It's completely pointless.

There was a good AMV I saw years ago where clips from Sailor Moon were synched to The Jerry Springer Show, and it worked because I didn't need to know Jerry Springer to know how over-the-top it was, and knowing Sailor Moon the audio worked because the show's cast is just that fucked up. Now THAT'S a win-win.

I dunno if this would be a good piece of advice but
Do you enjoy making stuff like this? Do you yourself find your content funny? Because if not, then why even bother?
The most important part about making content (Mugen, dumb videos, fanfiction reading, etc.) is the experience, and what you learn and create from it. You make it seem like a job when this kind of thing is more of a hobby if anything.

The AMV was hilarious to me until I switched my focus to trying to make the lip sync better.  Then it became a job.  To see that the Chobits segments are crap makes me regret the time I wasted trying to make lip sync somewhat passable.  But then again, those segments lost their hilarity after the first few times.
I still find the two Evangelion segments funny, and the Welcome to the N.H.K/Tommy Boy remains kind of enjoyable to me.

All I learned from this was that no matter what I do, how much time I put into it.. it ends up gaing negative reception in the end.  About the only positive thing to me right now is
"Now my MUGEN character feels more like Blitzkampf thanks to increased pausetime.  Along with that, changing 2A's animation has also increased combo opportunities.  I finally feel like I'm doing something!"

This AMV... I don't know.  I might as well can it and try again years later.
I would just like to have someone come up to me and tell me "You did a good job with creating that" or "My day sucked, but your creation made it better. Thank you." with no sarcasm behind it.

well then maybe humor isn't your thing. because it's not easy btw, and you can't force people to laugh at the things you thought were funny, especially if you aren't a funny person yourself, because that probably means you have a weird sense of humor that doesn't appeal to others.

Not helpful at all.

At least Jango's feedback gets me thinking after it settles in.
The second idea for using dialogue from MGS doesn't work anymore because the dramatic music ruins it.
Even with isolating the vocals, it still doesn't work.  The series has plenty of campy dialogue, so something good is bound to come along.

The first part with the interview from The Move song would fit better with clips from an ecchi anime. (Tenchi Muyo doesn't work in retrospect.)
As mentioned before, the part with Shinji listening to the character from killer7 still works.  The preacher style, campy tone Cam Clarke has with the dialogue sells it.  What matters is how people at a convention would react.  The parody of the elevator scene from Evangelion would work better with changed dialogue at the end, whether if it takes me rewriting the script or finding a game/movie with fitting dialogue.

Leaves space for new skits/parodies.

you are breaking humor down into a process, and missing the entire point. jokes flow way better when they are natural , not a bunch of piecework crafted together. that you have to put so much work and calculation into something as simple and dumb as a "parody amv" makes it seem not worth it. have you ever heard of the scenario in which a joke is not funny when it has to be explained. in your case it applies, you are throwing a bunch of obscure references that dont really work together, than breaking down the punchline bit by bit and telling people what they should be laughing at. thats not true humor. humor is often borne through simplicity, and when its complex, you ahve to make it worth it. it has to be clear what you were building up to, not something you have to sit down and explain afterwards.

You cant reduce humour to a recipe that you follow the steps of and then expect others to find it funny when explained.
likewise you cant decide that something is a joke and repeat it ad infinitun to reinforce the joke.

Jango, I watched that AMV you mentioned and saw parts of how it could be funny.  However, I think it requires quite some familarity with Sailor Moon's characters.  I got that the song was Weird Al's parody of "One Week" by the Barenaked Ladies.

Umezono:
That's one issue of whatever mental disorder I have.  My late mother said I had something called "Einstein Syndrome", but I'm convinced that it is autism instead. Hence my various embarrassments due to taking most things I hear literally.  That's been there since childhood.  The tendency to analyze (or over-analyze) things and obsessing over stuff like it is a major part of my life stems from it too.

I'm not asking for sympathy but I can't say if that explains some of my stupidity.  Recently, I get a strange feeling from being called stupid or weird.  Like I feel like I deserve it.

You care too much about what others think of you. That's a just petty defect for the average Joe, but a massive flaw of character for someone as weird as you. Don't try too hard to fit in (anywhere), it's neither going to work nor make any happier.

So my mind thought of taking a scene from the final episode of Cowboy Bebop and adding personal dumbass let's play commentary to make it seem like a cutscene from a shooter.

in comedy you're going to bomb all the fucking time. some standup comics that have years of experience bomb every now and then. a lot of the shit you make isn't going to be funny to most other people. don't beat yourself too much over it, don't overanalyze it and move on
