Ok here's the situation, suppose someone who doesn't make good sprites offers you a job to make the sprites for him. would you accept the job?

It would depend on how much this person was willing to pay, and what kind of sprites they needed.

If the money is good and the work isn't insane then yes. Just take steps to make sure you don't get screwed over during the process.

Ok, for those who say that would only accept if the money is good. How much would you ask for a single sprite? Let's say in dollars. How much for a hi-res and how much for a  low res?

I couldn't see myself charging for a single sprite, but If you defiantly want payback then I'd say 5$-10$ depending on the amount of detail.

But MUGEN is free, NiO. I think that charging for a sprite isn't correct...  o_O

yes, totally agree... MUGEN... not pixel art...

we do it for hobbie, because we wanted... if you are going to do something for someone else there's 2 options...

you like what he wants to do (or could be a favor for a friend) or you want something in return (money or other things)

There's something wrong with that, to pay for a piece of art and pay to code a character, especially in a web of Mugen...

Of course, in everyday life is common, but what I'm trying to say is that according to the rules of Mugen, you can't pay for something related to that. That's my opinion, probably all think different. u.u

You are thinking of sprite edits Darkgirl, they are talking about drawing something from the ground up completely original.
Like what borghi does, not like what  felo/blue does.

yeah i'm going to explain this simply:
mugen is free. anything made for mugen is free. anything that runs on the mugen engine is free. if someone is selling any of that to you, it's illegal.

i can, however, pay someone to make something for mugen (because i want something for mugen, but it's not done and i don't know how to do it and don't have the time to learn). i could pay caddie an amount of money to make a stage. i could pay drex for a bunch of sprites of whatever. i could pay a coder to code a character. i can't sell that, however. once i get that comissioned work, i can't sell it because it's for mugen, and mugen is free.

do you get it now

Great explanation Titiln.  ;) However, only Drex said how much he'd charge. What about the rest of you guys, would you charge from 5 to 10 dollars for a sprite? Remember about giving a price for a low res and one for a hi-res.

and what does it has to do with mugen anyway? nobody mentioned mugen in the first post or any of the replies, he just asked about making sprite in general.

my rate is more or less the same, but I classified according to how much effort I do for that sprite, so I make different price for a complete new sprite, minor edit, major edit, etc.

for example in stance animation, maybe I only make 2 new sprites, and the rest are just edit of those 2, so there is price difference between them,

unless the client does not want to hear that, and only want to know how much for the whole thing right here right now, in that case I make flat calculation.

this is not a consulting job, you arent really getting straight rates or good examples from those since everyone works differently and rather talk about their prices in private, ya know, business and all.

select the spriters you like and send them pms, you will get better answers.

I know for a fact that I can't commit to deadlines, because I have a real life busy schedule with work and family. I work with sprites for projects I care about only, and I do it for free to help friends achieve their goals.

If I were to charge for sprites, I'd charge around 20 - 30 USD per anim (anywhere from 6 to 12 frames) committing to ultimate detail and excelence, and nothing less. I would never accept a job for a full character, because I know I couldn't commit to such amount of time.
