Pretty self-explainatory, it's useful for members if they have lost interest in a certain topic and is tired of clicking "Mark All Messages as Read" everytime they click Show new replies to your posts. I've seen a lot of members complaining about telling stupid threads to die and then they have to bear the sh*t posted by trolls, that way may also smooth post flow.
