Katawa Shoujo is an eroge visual novel by Four Leaf Studios. The game originated in a sketch by a Japanese artist, the image was extensively discussed in the 4chan imageboard and a team was formed by members of the board and other internet communities to start development of the game. Infamously known for being the first visual novel to present the female romantic interests to all have disablities.

The player controls the actions of Hisao Nakai, a high school student who gets a heart attack after getting a love confession by the girl he likes. It is later discovered that he suffers from chronic arrythmia and while he can lead a normal life, the risk of having another attack is high and is persuaded into transferring into the Yamaku High School for disabled children because it has a 24-hour nursing staff and facilities prepared for any circumstance he may have. Despite being horrified by the idea at first, he seems to have no other choice and so starts his new life at his new school, with his new classmates: all with a different disability.

Personal opinion: I haven't finished it yet, only got a bad end and currently finishing one of the routes and the only thing I can say is that this game is adorable.
I'm not the kind of person who plays visual novels, let alone being emotionally affected by them so I guess you could say that my body just wasn't ready. At first I was impressed by the quality of the game, the visuals are nice and have some animated cutscenes that look straight out of a professional game. Music, while nothing spectacular, manages to stick in your head and feels appropiate to the mood of the scenes. The writing is excellent, very convincing and makes you feel actual care about the characters (ALL THESE FEELS).

If you have time, I seriously recommend giving it a try.

Seems interesting, and I like this type of indie stuff.
Stupid question, but how long does it take to finish the game? I don't have enough time to spend 20 hours on this game, but if it's short, why not. :)

Well, my bad ending took me two hours.

Just finished Hanako's route in three hours, skipping the entirety of Act 1. My guess is that every route lasts equally so that makes about 5~6 hours per route.

There are five girls so 100%ing it must take some 20 hours.

We already commented this in the Anime thread. But guess it went kind of unnoticed.

Anyway, the story is good. Don't expect anything completely exciting to appear. It's just a normal tale that explains the story between the main character and the girl he chooses. All with disabilities (blind, half-burnt, prosthetic legs, no arms and deaf/mute). It's a really nice story IMO.

Oh, and guys, it's +18, just so you know. For obvious reasons.

Thankfully, the "Disable adult content" option exists, for those grossed by the idea.

And yeah, the story isn't anything exceptional but goddammit is it emotional. Hanako's route opening brought a tear to my eye, and I almost broke down in tears when
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

were I not an emotionless bastard.

ok, now that we baited Iced to post in a galge topic (lol u fag) we can actually get back on topic; I plan to pick this up and knowing that it only last 20 hours I might play this before playing little bravers. Does this game has any voice or is it just bg music ?

If you disable disabled porn youa re a horrible person, disabled chicks are chicks too, you are being racist to disableds.

No voice acting, only BG Music and sound effects. And video openings by the guy who made Draw With Me.

A friend of mine who acts like he's partially possessed by 4chan brings this one up a lot, so after hearing him go on and on about it for a while I got curious and started giving it a spin.

It's certainly surprised me in some aspects, doing little things I hadn't seen before in games with a similar format, like small animations not directly tied to changes in the text (while, they sort of are, but not synchronized with it, which is a bit different from what I've see before), some nice work on transitions and effects, and some bits where the writing gets interesting and funny.

The group behind it seems quite aware of the can of worms they were getting themselves into, so if never feels fetishistic despite its unifying theme - in fact, it seems the issues covered tend to have very little to do with the visible disabilities - for example, I finished Rin's path yesterday, and while visibly her issue is the lack of arms, her whole issue is about difficulties with communication - that path can pretty much be defined by awkwardness, but it's rarely related to her lack of arms.

The fan work is starting to look as fascinating as My Little Pony FiM's, if more twisted at times - best example I can think of is Katawa Crash, even if borrows references from lots of other sources.
